View Full Version : the weather?
the one thing that spoilt the north/south was the weather IMO
not so much on the ride out, but coming home after it all, put a bit of a downer on it that & getting a flat tyre was more of a pi$$ off than having an off. and we were riding from 9 till 6 so by the time we got back and sorted it was a few pints in the pub......... then bed (looking foward to next year mind)
anywho, with the AE being more of a gathering than the ride out the weather will hold a big part of this , as if its crap it could spoil things a bit
so whats the forcast?

Direct from the met office...
UK Outlook for Tuesday 26 Jun 2007 to Thursday 5 Jul 2007:
Much of next week will be dominated by a cool north to northwesterly flow. Some dry and sunny intervals are expected in all areas but with an overall emphasis on rather cloudy skies, especially in the east. There will also be a scattering of showers and, for the first day or two, the showers may be heavy and prolonged in some eastern areas. Later they should become fewer and generally less heavy too, with longer drier intervals in between. It will be mostly rather cool or cool, although temperatures may approach near normal values in sunniest areas. The following week looks set to continue the rather unsettled cool type, with occasional rain, across the north, whilst further south there is the prospect of spell of generally more settled conditions.

Weather on the N/S was as good as could be expected. Friday Glorious Sun
Sat - some dry roads. Sun - started dry, dried up Then almost got sunburned waiting on Quiffs call that he'd located the elusive TimWilky.
Nothing like riding on wet roads to concemntrate the mind & Learn a required skill.
But agree , The AE in the wet, in tents would be more of a downer.
Good Luck! Shall be in the Med

You see this is all wrong.
A wee bit of PMA is required. (Positive Mental Attitude). Let's have no more of those negative vibes or it def will rain ;)

But I wont be doing any of that... and if someone brings a awning/gazebo in their car, then who cares if it rains or not, you'd have a weather proof workshop in the middle of the field.
I for one will re-consider vehicle type if the forecast looks wet. Not much fun doing 600 miles in the rain to sit in a feild with no where to dry your stuff, then have a cold for 2 weeks afterwards. Been there done that.
Still, its going to be warm sunny and lovely :)

UK Outlook for Friday 29 Jun 2007 to Sunday 8 Jul 2007:
Starting bright with showers in places but also some sunny spells. Some southern and southeastern parts may have a mainly dry day or two. However unsettled weather looks set to become established from the west over the first weekend and then continues for much of this outlook period. Some of the rain will be persistent and perhaps quite heavy at times, this most likely in the north and the west but, even further east and south, some heavy rain in the form of showers is possible. There will also be some drier, brighter spells and some sunshine with, as typical of a westerly type, the best of the sunshine more likely in eastern parts. Temperatures recovering towards normal after a cool start.

Just had a look at the sky news weather for the next 5 days for the AR area, doesnt look great but it does look better than it does right now and the temps are expected to be in the region 20 -21 with clouds and occasional showers, fingers crossed

BBC weather is a waste of space anyway - its always wrong:roll:
Either way, showers looks almost certain so I won't bother washing/polishing the bike before the trip. See, every cloud has a silver lining:D
Well I think we better start praying to the sun gods - unsurpisingly its not looking the best: http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/dayforecast.asp?zipcode=LA2%208AZ&day=4

I've just checked with the environment agency, and apparently Autwick is at VERY low chance of flooding. Kendal would flood first, and by that time (from my peek at the maps) Doncaster would be the modern day Atlantis!
So looks like we're sorted for flooding (but I haven't checked elevation/hills on/near the campsite). Couldn't give a monkies about rain.
EDIT: Just checked elevation/hills thanks to an OS map. Hill off to the West of Austwick, but we are in the valley bottom. Still, it's only a brook.

Doesn't some of you think our field could of been flooded by now? I have seen the sounth yorkshire pictures on the news, and to be honest its doesnt look promising.
Has anyone checked with the owner that its still ok?

See the post above.
It'd take approx 15m of standing water to flood the field. However, it could well be waterlogged due to sheer volume of water, but that's an outside chance IMO.

Dreams of setting up tent on wet field lol
Nah, water will run off the hills via Settle or Clapham bypassing us. Thats even if there's more rain, which isn't guranteed.
Worst case scenario, using the A65 could be hairy. But folks can still get home via Lancaster & on to the M6.
Folks from the south, just watch the news re the M1, which at the moment is closed by Sheffield because of flood risk. Should easily be open by the weekend though if there's not much rain.
EDIT: I don't mind calling the campsite tomorrow to enquire about the state of the field, but personally I think it's a bit pointless. If folks have got concerns, I'll call them tomorrow though. End of the day, it'll show the people that run the campsite that we're an organised group. HAHA!!

Looking at the met office forecasts it is dry down there for the Friday with rain on the saturday so with any luck pitching the tent will be at least semi dry. :)
Although it is early days yet. Forecasting any more than a day ahead is a lottery for the met.
.
Worst case scenario..........
it rains non stop & causes mass floods the whole of britan is 50foot under water and we all drown
it rains non stop & causes mass floods the whole of britan is 50foot under water and we all drown
In the event of that happening, you'll find me camped out in an old abandoned church on Mt Snowdon. All that place needs is a new roof, and it's quite nicely hidden away (you'd never find it as a tourist). Adequate food up there too...
And it's a good deal higher than 50ft ;)

Hovis, just to suit you, I'll enter into negotiations with two of the lads at work tomorrow. They both own speed boats. If I'm wrong about the weather, we can still do the rideout.[-o<
Someones working hard - its clearing up - Friday looks great. Saturday is clear in the morning but p*ssing down in the evening and Sunday looks like a wet ride home. Keep blowing wind!

Well, I have just called, and the results are in!! The lady, she say (I'm parapharasing BTW)....
The field has drainage (being a camping field) but obviously this is limited. The field WILL be wet/damp at least by the time we get there!! In her words "obviously we can't help it if it's raining"... I don't think she understood my point, but ho hum.
BRING SIDE STAND PUCKS!!!
However, should anyone forget, she's also said that there is a carpark we can make use of. I'm not sure of the size of the carpark, so I wouldn't advise that everyone assumes they'll be able to fit in here!! The car park I suspect will be "farmers tarmac" (gravel on top of mud more likely - if this is the case, the bikes still may dig in!!).
I'll post this in "The Last Word" as well.

Ahhhh was just going to phone the campsite and ask that very thing. Saved me a job baph..cheers. Drainage how much??? its going to be as soft as poo that field. Told you we were going to Glastonbury:rolleyes:
Ahhhh Drainage how much???
From past experience, campsites usually have decent drainage. HOWEVER, IIRC, we're in an overflow field that's usually used for animals (sheep I think were in there previously).
So, if the field does get completely waterlogged, we'll have sheep droppings floating into all the tents. Bring it on! I'm tempted to take tomorrow off work just so I know everything is in order before the departure friday morning.
whos idea was it to organise the AR when wimboldon is on ?
