I DID IT!!:)
after 50miles of circulating islands and adjusting my body position each time there it was SCRAPE, SCRAPE, everyone who said it was technique was right, i lean my sv1000 over til theres no tyre left to ride on, my chicken strips are zero! but its not needed to get your knee down, thanks to all the people that said just hang off as far as poss so it feels silly:rolleyes: i did and it work'd:cool:
the first time you hear it touch down? well it gets easyer after that.

whats even better about getting your knee down by using the correct technique is you suddenly realise how much further you have got to lean the bike as well... at first you think your going to fall over on the bike, when you get your knee down, its woohahhahaa.. I got miles left to bank on the bike as well...
congrats mate, you have now joined the club.. now you have to go out and scrape your left knee slider ;)

You want my bike if you want something that corners on rails ;) not got my knee down on this one yet, but its much more planted than the previous ZX-6R so think I should be able to get that out the way pretty quickly one weather dries a bit!
got rid of chicken strips on right side of tyre withing first day of ownership... now its a case of seremony of scraping right knee going round roundabout, the n scrape left as I exit it stage right... left... lol

and it will be all run in by the weekend then.. as I dont use it for commuting.. been bloody cleaning it everytime Ive taken it out.. has about 12 coats of polish on it already!
trying to stay away from the temptation of taking it appart as well!
earning enough that I can pay someone alse to do the mucky work.. but its still calling me in the garage...

there are good left hand corners near me to get left knee down ;) one is a slip road that goes through 270 and tightens up to buggery near the end.... and other random slow speed corners up on the mountains near me... but you need cajones of steel to do those corners dangling off your bike... hence why I no longer attempt those corners anymore!

dont try to be rossi just hang off like a prat as far as you can without falling off, like i said at the start of this thread i found i didnt need to lean the bike right over like i had been doing. i could never do it on stock OE 650s tyres tho, the sv1000s has pilot sports on.

neat 8)
It is hard to get your LEFT down on the road as UK roads are not conducive, but still try and mirror what you are doing on the right as it is good practice to be getting off the bike rather than leaning it at silly angles , you never know one day it might just happen!! :)
The only other way to practice lefts is round a supermarket carpark on a Sunday after they shut 8)

I've only done it on track as our roads are too slippery to do it on them. The trick is to have your inside leg free-floating, without any real pressure on the peg. All your weight must be on your a*se and the outside leg. Then just let the inside fall as much as you can inside the turn.
There must be also no weight on the clip-ons as this is not only a general riding error with a multitude of bad side-effects but eventually won't allow you to keep your inside leg as free as you could.

I wouldn't say that is the definitive answer... for instance you can actually help steer the bike if you put weight on the inside peg ;)
But whatever works for the individual .. you only have to look at the variety of styles in motoGP to see there is no 'ONE' way ;)

right knee down twice again tonight:) one question? how should my foot be positioned on the right foot peg? only my foot slipped off once and it was a [-o< moment:smt078 . confidence growing by the day tho:)
valleyboy
26-06-07, 08:27 PM
bit difficult to explain that one... and by no means do I know for certain Im using the correct method either! but its the bottom of your foot facing in towards the frame of the bike, with the bal of your foot still on the peg...
I sort of grip the tank with my other leg.. i.e. on right hand knee down, use left leg to grip tank.. and place my head roughly behind my wing mirror, but still tucked next to the screen, and look in to the corner as you are going... I also now ( on this bike anyway) use my left arm to grip against the tank as well, as the tank is wide enough that it can be used for that as well.... also kind of point my right elbow down to the floor.. kinda sounds funny.. easier to demonstrate! lol

Be due a clean soon then, i bet your bikes covered in bits of knee slider  .. I must learn how to do knee down properly, so i can show off like you guys 8-[

you know when i said i thought i looked silly hanging of the bike on islands? well cuz said it looks like the right position i'm in and it dont look daft so thats a result.
Is it hard to stop now you've got your knee down? I'm imagining it could become a habbit, doing it at every mini roundabout and junction!!
kwak zzr
26-06-07, 08:40 PM
the larger faster islands are best.:)
valleyboy
26-06-07, 08:48 PM
the big fast roundabouts are a bit easier.. but, more can go wrong if you feck up! smaller roundabouts are good for fine tuning what you pick up on large roundabouts, as then it is down to body position, and leaning the bike correctly rather than scream around dangling off bike! so far I can do 25mph round a smallish roundabout, and would say that was still too fast, as I was running wide on it.. left hand knees have mainly been slow corners and a quick drop in scrape knee and back up straight... though I aint doiung those corners again.. cos you do have to be mental to do them! (left hand hairpin on black mountains anyone ?!?)

It always feels like you're hanging off much further than you actually are.
Where are you getting knee downs? I've never even got close on the road and have never found a suitable spot to practice. I don't like riding repeatedly up and down the same country road as I feel like I'm taking the **** with the locals.
I've got a mate in Milton Keynes, maybe that would be a start?

MK is a great place for islands but loads of traffic there, any large island will do but not with cars on.

Nope, you just need to find the correct bends. My left is way much more worn than my right. Anyway, wel done Kwak I knew you could do it!

They are the besterest ever. The WIZ sparky one's are the best value for money, I've had mine for about 2 months and they ahve survived 2 rideouts and a trip to Nurburgring and they still ahve lots of life left in them! Awesome! Unfortunately they only had the George Cross ones in the shop.
