Maria (Miss Alpinestarhero) is thinking of getting the following phones, but she can't decide one over the other - .orger's, its up to you!
What would you choose, and why - in terms of performance and usability and, importantly, reliability?
Matt
Sam's got a Sony Erricson 810i. It's a good phone, nice screen, good camera. Haven't seen the Nokia, but I'm not a big fan of the Nokia software, so I'd probably chose the 810i.

When I got my last phone, it was a choice between these two. The chap 'selling' the phone said that they were ' much of a muchness', but the Nokia was very unreliable. I was suprised by this, as I have had Nokias in the past and quite liked them. Just as I was due to make up my mind, a bloke came in with his Nokia saying that it had broken again, for the fifth time. :-s
That about clinched it for me.
Been very happy with the Sony so far.

The best features of each...
Sony Erricson:
Fast web - 384kbps transfer. This will depend on price plan though. The phone can talk at 384kbps, can the provider talk back this fast? What pricing plan is she looking at?
3.2mp camera with 16x zoom.
More built in memory (64mb).
Nokia:
Takes microSD cards, so memory is cheaper than the k810i.
Smaller (just) and lighter.
FM Radio.
MP3s definitely supported (k810i specs don't mention file format), as are MP4s (video).
"Flight mode" - would be potentially useful for me personally, for Maria, not unless she goes on planes a lot.
k810i has NO statistics on the official website for talk/standby time!!
So to sum it up, the Nokia!
Nokia firmware faults are usually fixed pretty fast, hardware (design) faults on the other hand, could be a complete nightmare. What were the faults?

none of the above,
nokias have long term issues steming from crappy design and even crappyer build quilitys.
sony ericsons i dont know much about in all honesty but i wouldnt get one of those either....
in fact i have been considering getting shot of the mobile. its not like we really need them.

FM Radio. SE K810i has this too
MP3s definitely supported (k810i specs don't mention file format), as are MP4s (video). MP3 are supported, not sure about MP4 on the 810i
"Flight mode" - would be potentially useful for me personally, for Maria, not unless she goes on planes a lot. SE K810i has this as well
k810i has NO statistics on the official website for talk/standby time!!
400 Hours Standby, 10 Hours Talk Time
Baph, still the Nokia?

Totally agree, but obviously I am not man enough to do it. :(
Baph, still the Nokia?
Honestly, yes. Granted battery life exceeds that of the Nokia.
However, so long as there's no hardware faults (eg, it falls to bits) then the memory issue would swing it for me as most of the rest of the features are identical, the k810i only beating the Nokia on camera quality/zoom.
I like the Nokia interface, and being an IT type, no matter what phone I buy, it never stays on standard firmware for long.
Horses for courses, and I currently own a Motorola SLVR 7 ;)

I've got the SE and it works for me. Don't use it to its full potential though, but got a relatively good deal with free 1GB memory card.

I like both phones. The GF has a 6300 i have an 810i
Its a cracking phone and a good successor to the 6230i(which it didnt replace really) Its very user friendly, good software, and it feels nice in your hand. Key spacing is good, and the camera during the day is superb, better than i think, my old 800i. The battery life is suspect though. With the 3G switched to when needed, it doesnt last as good as i thought. However i think the better half dies use her phone quite a bit, and she lives in a very bad siganl area, so the phone is always hunting for the network which doesnt help. Gets 4 out of 5 thumps up lennies
The 810i. Well, after trying the N95, i decided to upgrade my 800i to the 810i. There isnt a lot of difference, but i get 2 batteries, 2 chargers, and all my car stuff works with it. The 810i is a cracking phone, as was the 800. The software is not like sonys of the past. Its very intuitive and a lot of things can be customised. The keypad, although odd looking, is easyier to use than the 800, and about the same as the 6300, and can speed text easily. Its stuffed full of features, and the camera isnt bad, but not spectacular(always going to be a compromise on a camera phone) but it has the added beneift of a flash which is very good. It takes Sony MSMM2 cards, and limited to 2gb at present. Its a good phone.
There will always be a battle between Nokia and Sony. I used to like nokias and wish at the time i had never got my T68 from Sony. But they have improved the software and to me, on par with Nokia, but design wise, they i feel are 1 step ahead.
Out of the 2 phones, hmmm, its a tough choice. They are both the best of the bunch, they do everything well, and with out fuss or delay (Unlike the n series nokias)
If she wants a simple phone without all the gubbins, then the 6300, the 810 has the slighly better camera and few more features. Both suffer form poor battery life if the 3G is set to on all the time.
HTH...now i'll read the rest of the thread and find shes already chosen one.

Interesting replies - the SE seems to be getting the nod so far. She's not too worried about all the features (but cheers dave for the run down on the key features of both) but having a decent camera is important for her, and ease of use i.e. buttons (because she texts and rarly ever makes a call).
Any more votes for either?

MattTo be honest, Baphs run down of features was pretty poor ;)
They basicaly have the same features, The 810i has a better camera and a flash. Other than that, theres a nothing in it really.
If battery life is a player and the 810i pips it.
However, the 850i is out later this year. Smaller than the 810i, but with a Cybershot 5mp camera! If in no rush, id wait, its going to wipe the floor with the N95

I always like Nokias, but mt last 3 phones have been Sony.. I think they seem easier to use, perhaps more intuitive? the B/F has a new Nokia and says he gets headaches from it (??)..... I am sold on SEs now.
I've got a later model SE, but it has the same buttons. I hate texting on it, I've never really used predictive text, but on standard letter by letter it seems to lag behind.
wouldnt recommend it.

SE all the time.

I was going solely by the information available on the tech sheets direct from Nokia & Sony Ericson respectively :p As I said above, because of the memory issue, and what I personally want from a phone, it'd still be the Nokia.

I've got a 6300 does what it says on the tin no nonsense easy to use phone.
Its the best phone I've had in a long while. I'm a Nokia man through and through now I've tried a few others but I want a phone that to me is intuative to use, not one I have to think about what does what...

Thanks for your replies everyone, what you've said has been really helpful :D
Wester: which model are you referring too? If the text function of the k810i is poor then it is something I would definately have to consider
