View Full Version : Rain Rain, Go Away... the backup plan!

Right everyone, seeing as the weather looks UTTERLY POO

PLAN A
I'm going to do an anti-rain dance to clear it all up in time.

... No? Right ok,

PLAN B
I'm looking into sorting a marquee - subject to cost, availability and the campsite owner allowing it.

Failing that if everyone who's driving a car to the event - like me - could bring a gazebo, we can lash them together to form a 'dry zone' where all our socialising can take place.

I will also be bringing Moonbase 1, my 12 man tent and will be looking into some way to rig up something in the main room for people to hang up kit for drip drying.

Could all potential gazebo carriers speak up in here so I can take a count and see if it's a viable option (I'll be buying one before i leave fri morning if I have to)

I seem to recall there are 2 going already not including me?

It's not all doom and gloom!

I've just been informed there will be one gazebo already, any further gazebo's will be a £10 fee to have on site. Are people willing to spread the cost to keep dry? :)

Put your clothes back on, tis nice round here at at present. Cloud is high with blue bits showing. Not had any rain since last night. We don't want to encourage it.

£10 per gazebo - that seems a bit money grabbing given the potential size of the booking and the awful weather.
I think a gazebo tax (though it would have to be volutary) would be a good idea. A few quid each would be fine, but momre than that and it's the principle of the matter that would bug me more than the outright cost.

I'll pay whatever to keep us all dry for a bit(not for all of us though lol)

The email notification version of slark's post implies a totally different meaning to what he actually posted. The joy of interpreting smilies in text.

Good job I wasn't meaning he was stupid, otherwise I would be in trouble.
Just meaning I agree!

Ok, I've ordered 2 x cheap gazebos and 3 side panels (just in case it starts raining sideways) from argos. However, one gazebo structure will be needed for cannibalising into a kit rack to go in Moonbase 1.

Especially when camping for 2 nights costs £9!!

Right been asked to clarify, we'll have a lighted approx 3M sq covered area for doing the Quizz, demos and such like, and when not used for that, there'll be a cd/radio thing on there so folks can mill about.

Beer run and food run (for BBQ) already sorted.

It a British summertime, I'm amazed people seem surprised it's forecast to rain

Whilst glad thoughs going by other means are still attending, I'll be going by bikenot my first choice of bike , granted, but a bike none the less, I have waterproofs and a tent that should be OK, (and at worst case an air mattress to float around on :D ).

But I'll be there, if 9 months of pain and agony, multiple doses of heavy drugs and three operations haven't stopped me I don't think a little water will.

Cheers Mark.

I have just had a quick run out to make sure all is ok with the bike. I made it to within about 10 miles of the camp site, roads are dry and clean. So looking good for the run up tomorrow.

I'll be bringing up a largish 6-8 man tent with reasonable headroom and 3 entrances if anyone wants to work out a means link several large tents together.

I think everyone figured on a bit of rain, just not the possibility of drowning :)

But it doesn't matter, since when was the weather forecast ever right anyway? I totally understand why people would think of dropping out now, after all, not all of us even do much wet riding or have the gear, and it's a long trip for some in the blazing sunshine. There's nothing wrong with that folks!

But don't miss out just because you're a wee bit worried. The absolute worst that'll happen is you get wet. That's all. You'll dry. You don't need £100 top of the range waterproofs, my tried and tested waterproofs are both from Millets and cost under a tenner, frinstance. And modern tents are incredible, too.

The weather can't make the weekend not work, the only thing that can do that is if nobody turns up, which would be an incredible shame and a huge missed opportunity. So if you really, definately don't want to go, then fair enough, but like I've said earlier don't be put off by the rain, it's only water.

Yep, another one for The Gazebo Fund.

I wish there was some way I could get my mum and dad's massive tent down, but there's no way it'd go on the bike. It looks like we're going to have dropouts from the camping so, could we not take those spaces for gazebos etc? Bit cheeky otherwise. Then again, did we pay up front? I can't remember.

I think we've got most of a field to ourselves anyway, so space shouldn't be a problem.

I'll happily chip in a bit for the gazebo tax :D

Out of curiosity, is anyone interested in having somewhere to hang kit? If not I won't bother with that aspect of the plan.

I would be, yes. Especially if it gets wet, bike gear takes up a lot of space in a tent even when you can sleep on it.

Yeah I'll pay some gazebo tax to stay dryish, but a gazebo doesn't fit on top of my paniers, so will have to rent a space in someone else's

Moonbase 1 is my 12 man tent. I'll be setting up the main living area as a cloakroom, no tax on this unless they charge me more for having a huge tent.

The gazebos are a separate issue that we'll need as much space as possible under for people, not kit. :)

Yup, it's got 3 rooms. Doesn't mean I can take in waifs and strays who can't be bothered to bring their own tent though. :p

Might set one of the room spaces aside with a groundsheet for lid storage.

Maybe tomorrow, you'll wanna settle down.
Maybe tomorrow, you'll just keep moving on.

Gazebo Town is unlikely to be water-tight, but I guess if you fall asleep in there no-one's likely to move you...
