View Full Version : Article in this months Bike
there is an article in this months BIKE which puts the SV650 in the top ten second hand bikes to have.
Now I completely agree with nearly all their comments in terms of engine power, ease of ride, forgiving, Vtwin smile. But where I draw the line is their claim that the curvier model is sexier !!! Everyone knows that it looks like a badly made balloon animal and that the pointy is by far sexier.
I may have to complain to the journo's obudsmen about this glaringly obvious misleading twaddle !!!
(Steps away from the smoldering blue paper)
IMO curveys are way sexier :D

The article is Britain's most popular used bikes searched for on motorcyclenews.com. The top nine were in last month and were are sports bikes. This month was the 2nd part, the next most popular.
I agree with their claim being a load of rubbish, curves are only more lovable on a woman!

A Curvey SV is like a fine wine that matures with age.
And basically, the Pointy looks like it has fallen out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. :D
Great, we have not had a Curvey v Pointy thread for a little while.
Pointies have cheap frames and you can't turn the headlights off...
Though having lent a hand with one last weekend there does seem to be a touch more room to get at the Throttle bodies than there was for the carbs...
None the less:
Curvy is best:cool:

Nope, not in denial at all. Just a man of taste. ;)
Riding a curvey SV is very much like making love to a beautiful woman. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Riding a pointy is very much like being arrested, locked up and then having to play Mummys and Daddys with your cell mate and you're always mother!

make your mind up mike you've just gone to great lengths to kill one and then got yourself a pointy vfr:):):):):)
Curvies look like they've been left out in the sun too long and melted. They're globular and have no lines that flow and follow each other. It's almost as if a man at Suzuki said "We've got this fairing we never used on that Jet-ski project, and this tailpiece that we were going to put on a scooter but it was too ugly even for that. Somewhere or other we've got that rejected design of TL1000 fuel tank - how about we build a frame from short bits of waste alloy tube from the scrap bin and hang all these bits of crap off it?"

That would be faired curvies Lozzo. Now naked curvies, that's what a bike should look like. In order of looks:
Naked Curvy
Faired Pointy
Naked Pointy
Faired Curvy
Now let that be an end to it!

It's a good post. But, did you know that the curvy frame was the most expensive single road bike part Suzuki made when it was developed- Didn't lend itself at all well to mass production, unlike the dead simple pointy frame. Personally I reckon Suzuki had no idea what they were actually making when they designed the SV, no real idea of the sales volumes they were about to tap, which is why they used such an inappropriate process to build it- it's a design that makes it viable to make very small volumes, but it doesn't scale well, unlike more conventional frames which are expensive to set up for but cheap to actually make, so making a hundred would be ridiculous, but making 10000 is cheap.
But still, curvy frame = design by designer, pointy frame = design by accountant.
The pointy tail is one of the best ever though, the tail light is just supoib. Curvy tail's nice enough that you see it bolted to streetfighters sometimes, but it's just got no "wow" does it? And the fairing's an oddity, but then, so is the TL.

not to everyones taste i know but i love the siver alloy frame on my pointy thats why i wont put lowers on and cover it up.

I just cannot bring myself to like the looks of the curvy, in either faired or naked form. It's like it was designed by a man who is into fat burds with big arses.
The pointy looks as if a man who is into architectural sculpture penned it, it's beautiful in an industrial kind of way.

Never heard this about the frame, it keeps it all together doesn't it? What more do you want? Mines black looks good, I'm Happy
Why do you want to turn the lights off? so someone can hit you?

Are you a politician? Very Eloquently said
My thoughts are that the curvy looks dated, no bike now is designed with such flowing curves, as such its a classic, yes?
However
The Pointy looks better in my opinion, one word.....AGGRESSIVE, it might not be as fast/refined/expensive as some other bikes but it looks like it could do the business

Forgot to mention, they are totally redesigning the SV for next year aren't they?
Then the pointy will be 'The 2nd generation'

So to recap.
Curvey SV = Right
Pointy SV = So, so, Wrong.
Seriously though, I agree with Northwind. There are a lot of signs that the second generation SV was built down to a price, certainly more than the first generation. As well as the frame, it is a well known fact that the paint quality
was not quite as good on the mark II. The statement regarding the frame is also totally correct. But, hey, when it comes to SVs when isn't Northwind correct? :)

still doesn't change the fact that someone at suzuki misread the packaging and left the first gen in the microwave for too long...
cooincidentally, the pointy rated somewhere like 26th iirc in the bike of the year section, with a shining review, where was the curvey? oh, that's right, it's stuck in the days of black and white film and handlebar mustaches...

Curves all the way when clothed, preferably fully clothed like this.....

How sexy is that? It's got the right blend of TL1000S influence, while being something different. It looks totally different to pretty much all the other sports bikes too.
But I think the naked pointy is better looking than the naked curvy. But then my bike is going to be naked when it is finished, and it's a curvy.
I'm just a walking contradiction.
But so you pointy lovers don't feel left out, here's a fully clothed pointy
