View Full Version : Brake problems...

I have a new Kwak, and its developed a problem...
at speeds of over 50mph, the front brakes judder... but tehre is no pulsing on the lever, so Im sure its not a warped disc... I thought it may have been the leading edge of the pads catching on the discs, so I filed down the leading edge of the pads, but to no avail.
Im now left scratching my head, the bike is new (i.e. a month old) and Ive looked at the obvious, it was doing it all day yesterday, and I did a large amount of miles, and it still plays up, so I dont hink its crap on the disc either..
at speeds of less than 40mph, the brakes are fine, can use them as hard as I require, but above 50mph, its a no go, even one finger on the brakes causes a judder....
any ideas anyone..
Bikes a ZX-6R 2007 model... and before anyone starts, no I havent been playing about with it..... all Ive done is put a fender extenda on recently, but that is well clear of the wheel, and very doubtfull if that causes it...

Back to the dealer with it.There could well be a problem with how it was PDI d,or even a build fault. The obvious candidate would be dodgy head race bearings but it could be several things.Just as an example,I heard about a new ZX9R that had similar symptoms and the dealer looked at it,adjusted the head races and said it was fine.Shortly after the head bearing disintergrated.
Checked brake disc alignment? One or both could be warped.
As above - back to dealer.

Take it back to the dealer and get them to sort it, you paid a lot of money for that bike, I'd be expecting the dealer to sort it if it were me.
Good luck getting it sorted out.

Ive checked for the discs being warped, it isnt that.... will quickly go check to see if they are alligned with each other....
Generaly, I would just pop into the dealer... except I bought the bike in Bristol... so have a treck to get the bike to them, means taking a day off... simularly any of the other local Kwak dealers...
I now work silly hours, so cant do it during the week, and all the workshop staff everywhere I know take the weekends off, so it may be take it to a garage I trust, and ask their opinion, but again, its wait until the weekend time :( when my probation period is up in work, shouldnt be a problem as I could take a half day and cover my hours otherwise.....
It really is like a fine line.. above 50mph it judders, below it, nothing, I can grab as hard as I want...
just cleaned up the discs, so going for another quick run to check on them again...
cheers

Bike is broke, it's new and under warranty - get the stealer to come and pick it up bcause 'it is not safe to ride' with faulty brakes. Then they can deliver it back when fixed. This is one of the reasons you paid so much for a new bike ;)
EDIT: Just seen your sig. can beat your 1500 miles! mines on 1600 and I will have had it 4 weeks on Tuesday!

I dont think its the brakes... they have been cleaned, and greased up, used brake disk cleaner, even filed back the leading edges of the pads to make sure they werent catching on anything.... and they still play up, starting to think it may be the head bearings, as the stearing is very loose at the moment.....
really could do without this now, one reason why I chopped the other bike in to begin with... and I havent even shown this bike a glimpse of an allen key or socket set yet and its already breaking on me :smt087
You should be able to take it to ANY kwak dealer in the UK. It has full UK warranty. No need to take it to Bristol. Stop messing with it and get it sorted as by the sound of it its very unsafe.
Good luck with the dealer.

sadly, nearest Kwak dealer to me is still 30+ miles.. just gets complicated to sort out time to take it to a dealers now...
If it's unsafe and by the sound of it it could be as anything amiss with steering or braking is really dodgy. You should be able to get the nearest dealer to pick it up at a mutually agreeable time. They may be able to do a Saturday.

VB why dont you ring the place that you bought it from tomorrow and see what they say. Beenz is right that doesnt sound safe and if its not safe to ride they should collect your bike and deliver you a courtesy bike at the same time.
I know its not what you want to hear, but you have to think of your safety IMHO.
Dont risk it. Get the dealer out to collect it.

Will ring up Bristol Kawasaki tomorrow and see about getting the bike over to them ASAP then..

You mess with it and you could void the warranty!
good luck though.
leave it alone & get the dealer to sort it out
Sounds like you should have bought another 2nd hand bike if you're so eager to tinker with it and so reluctant to ask any dealer to come and colllect it with a courtesy bike.

Bristol is the nearest UK dealer for him isn't it?
Does that apply to the deepest darkest valleys??
I thought he had to fill in a special DVLA form to register it over where he lives..

Basically, from work, Bristol is just as easy to get it from to the next dealership... nearest is South Wales Superbikes, and it would take me an age to get into newport and find it, easier to go where I know..
anyway, its been to the dealers... one disc is warped, but its within service limits.. so nohthing they can do at the moment, advice was let it progress, and bring it back if it gets worse..
after some more experimenting on my behalf, speeds above 60mph are unaffected, or below 50mph... this things sweet spot seems to be the 50-60mph area.. sadly, mechanics rode the bike, one said he could feel the problem, but didnt know what was causing it, the other said it was nothing out of the ordinary... do'h!

...and a NON Kawasaki!
Hope you get it sorted VB, such things tend to dampen the riding confidence and accordingly enjoyment, a little.:(

i would not be to happy buying a brand new bike to find out the disk was warped, however bad?
could you not insist on a new disc
I would try to get them to replace it. Don't go in all guns blazing, just complain in person when there are other customers listening.

Warped disc after less than 2000 miles takes the p1ss a bit.
Will they replace it after it exceeds the tolerance or is it considered a consumable like pads?
People seem to be having similar probs with CBRs. The price you pay for low unsprung weight at the front.

they have said that if it goes over the tollerance limit, then they will replace it...
Ah nuts, thats bad news VB, sorry to hear you didn't get the resolution you were after. What are you going to do now?

Not much I can do now.... going to get a second opinion from somewhere else, also going to go to tyre fitters and ask if they can just check the balancing on the tyres... too many little things could be causing this at the moment...

A second opinion is a very good idea. Personally I'd just take it to them and say fix it. By taking it to a tyre fitter first could result in a bun fight and blamestorming with one shop blaming the other. Take it there if you get no luck at the other dealers.
Good luck!

Tyre fitter would be an easy option, as if its just a missing or missplaced weight, that can be sorted there and then... and the bloke I use has a good reputation...
Second opinion would probably be from a Honda garage, I get most stuff done there anyway, and they would gain no work from what they find anyway.. and I trust their opinion, they have turned away work from me in the past as they thought it didnt need doing... if they can find whats up with it, at least I can arm myself when I take it to the next Kwak dealers... and they needent know that someone else has looked at it...
