View Full Version : I filtered......
.....well nearly
Riding to work yesterday. 1830 on a Saturday, so the roads were fairly quiet. Came upon a queue of traffic on a relatively wide road, so feeling fairly confident (thanks to AR07), I decided to make my way to the front of the queue. Got to the front, grinning from ear to ear, traffic lights were still red.
Lights changed to green, tried to set off and I STALLED!!
Thank God for my lid coz I was blushing furiously (not that you'd be able to tell anyway;) ) . Managed to sort myself out and got going.
So will I be filtering again?
Absolutely:D :D
Congrats Melody!
Don't worry, we all stall at the front of a queue sometimes, and it is embarrassing, but you'll recover!

yay....oh deeer. never mind. its good though isn't it. giant rasberries in helmet when it goes right...ha ha Mr van driver I toasted you and you stalled--if you ever get a moment like that its hilarious. keep trying. At least your bike can overtake,,my black ones sick and its embarassing..especially trying to overtake old lady in nissan micra..and its given up by the time your half way down her car!!
Its a good feeling. Ive been using mine for the 100mile commute this week and found that I must have saved myself a good 40mins.
What speed do you reckon is safe to filter? I started the week at low 20s but found myself upto low 30s by the end of it and there were still bikes coming past me!
I did exactly the same thing my first time out on the SV... filtered to the front, then stalled.
Restarted... then stalled again, then restarted and went and hid.
But well done, another milestone passed... you'll be at it all the time soon.

Nice one, you'll never be stuck at the back of the line again.
 Filtering's a great advantage. :D Stalling, ah well. We all do it at the most embarrassing moment possible. ;)

Hi Melody,
I believe the term "making progress" if more fitting, (although the stalling bit kind of negates that ;) ), just another part of the biking thing, well done, the next step is to predict the lights so you can coast up and pull away at the front, over time it'll all come to you.
A good looking girl on a good looking bike, I'd imagine you have no difficulty getting attention, so I think the stalling bit is probably unnecessary, or best saved for that "sunsilk moment" you ladies do when taking you helmet off ;).
Just as a bit of advice, it pays to make sure the lead vehicle has seen you when you do this as at times they have been known to "shut the door" or at least try to.
But as I say well done, it's all experience and practice, so all good stuff :thumright:

Yeah, well done...... :)
Leaps and bounds you are making, it seemed you felt about 100% more confident from when I first met you at AR07, until you left.
Glad to see you doing so well :)

Awwww :D You are not alone by any stretch, everyone has done/will do that (oh and the other one is putting it in neutral, then not being able to get it out of neutral for the entire traffic light cycle - solution, unknown to me at the time, is to paddle forward a fraction and then dab first again). Oh, and I also had to enlist help from burley cruiser types to get a bike off the centre stand at Matlock Bath :D

Oh boy havent we all dont that as some point then its a frantic search for the starter button for a quick get away to save some face. Just be ready and keep the revs up abit more imagine your in the gp waiting for the lights to go green :-) used to be even worse when i would filter to the front of a traffic que on my old hornet and the thing would decide to run out of juice and start to die then i had to get to the fuel tap quick before she died.

Stalling is nothing... wait until you're riding around with mates, and the rider to your right hits your kill switch as the lights turn to amber and then ride off! :D

filtering is awesome, nothing better than the feeling of casually rolling up at the front of the queue and then pulling away clean at the front with an empty road ahead...
i've yet to stall the bike (after filtering anyway) but will admit to casually rolling across a main road whilst revving the bike when trying to cross from one side road to the other. note to self: ensure you clunk the box into 1st and not neutral when pulling up;)
only one thing worse than stalling, and thats doing what i accidently done, gave it too much gas and wheelied across the junction!!! It was not intentional and caught me completly unaware! brown trouser moment.
Ha, did exactly the same thing at the weekend having just picked up me gixer from the dealers. Been filtering for years, slowed towards front of queue blipping the throttle (Oooo does sound good) as I pulled upto a pug 106 full of chav's....
Roared off (eventually) taking an alternative scenic route :-dd

Omg haha you have just reminded me of an incident which happened to my years ago when i had a vtr1000 i gave that abit to much of a handfull and fed the clutch out abit smart off the line and she rose like a jumbo jet taking off, **** myself and put it down sharpish, mate who was behind said it looked quite good and it rose at least a couple of feet :D scary when your not expecting it. Just gota try and make it look like you meant it to happen by putting it down gently :smt046

Find I'm stalling my VFR a lot, perhaps cause it has not got the tick over grunt of the SV or the fuel injection is a bit pants at low revs? Most likely cause will be rider error!
Cheers guys. Good to know that I'm not on my own on this one

You know us too well.I absolutely live for those 'susilk moments'. I've been known to pull up for no reason at all, other than take off my lid, shake my hair out, run my fingers through my hair, put my lid back on and ride off again:smt003 :smt003 :smt003

I definitely feel so much more confident. So looking forward to AR08

:D :D :D I've done that SO many times

Did that once on my 125, thankfully not on the SV. Definitely a brown trouser moment

Oh yea...those sunsilk moments where I take off my lid revealing sexy helmet hair, try to run my fingers thru my hair but the winds tied it in knots and then try to put my lid back on without any strands of hair going in front of my eyes or in my mouth :smt046
When I was on my training I'd fuss around with my hair so much trying to arrange it so that it didn't irritate me I'd forget to put my earpiece on

On that point, I'll say that so long as you feel you can stop/take avoiding action in time, then it's fast enough. If you doubt your ability to stop/swerve, it's too fast.
I definitely feel so much more confident. So looking forward to AR08
Good good. I'm glad after concerns you had on the AR you've seen that nothing bad happened, and confidence has come from it.
BTW, as WRCSixtyThree said, I've stalled after filtering before now too. I think it must be one of those rites of passage things.

The bag of spanners has started to do that to me if i dont keep the revs up before she's warmed properly, nothing more embarrassing than pulling to the front and then stalling when the lights change.
But at least when its going again you can then overtake the cagers that were laughing a you at the lights

My old speciality was getting to the front of the queue in about 4th gear, then having to pull away at huge revs with the clutch barely disengaged :)
