Right got the valve clearance checkedon my Z750, the exhaust side is way out the lowest is down at 0.15, most around 0.20. They should be 0.22 min. I am not getting on with the workshop manual, it seems to say adjust them and no more.

However this is what i think i know:
1. Remove cam chain tensioner
2. Remove cam shaft(s)
3. Pull out shims
4. Fit new correct size shims (where do i get these from)
5. Reinstall camshafts
6. Refit camchain tentioner

Are there any other parts that I need to take off apart from the relevant covers etc, I just talking about engine bits.

(I have posted this on the Z forum, this forum is better though so I though i would try you guys as well)

Is this a difficult job, it dosn't look to bad. I have never done anything this complicated before but then every new job i do is the most complicated one yet. Swaped an engine on the sv which works.

The other thing is am i likely to have done any damage to the engine with the exhaust shims running under spec. Its only just over the sheduled service anyway so I wouldnt have known even if I had it serviced by a dealer.

when resetting them should I aim for the middle of the range or towards the top as these valve seems to tighten and not loosen under use.

Most modern valves tighten with use so go to the upper end of the clearance, you will propbably find you can only get shims in 0.05 increments so you may not have a lot of choice.

Shims can be bought at the dealer or Ebay - I think a lot of Kwaks are the same as Suzukis.

You seem to have the idea of how to do it, but I cannot tell you exactly as dont own a Z750. It is pretty easy, just do it slowly and check everything twice....

no idea if damage has been done, 0.15 instead of 0.22 does sound pretty tight. The damage is long term weakening of the valves and seats due to excessive heat, nothing you can do about it so forget about it.

Are the shims under the buckets or on top? If they're the big ones on top, you can use a tool like a C-spannerto press the valve down and hoik the shim out, and leave the camshafts in place. Yo can get any type out by removing the camshafts though. Get a torque wrench for reassembly, but it will probabyl be a low range one - wait till the manual arrives to check.

(not read it though).

Shims from teh biek shop, you will need to know the size of the old ones first so draw up a table and fill it in as you take them out. Then be prepared fro a week of downtime while they get them in. The manual will have a table of old size and clearance vs. new size needed.
