View Full Version : Why do you ride?

Whilst out lunchtime was thinking to myself why do i ride, why not drive. I'm for the simple reason that I love how i can get away and have fun, for me also it relieves stress, trouble at home i can just get out on the bike and it will calm me down. And then i hear others who say to me that theyre more forced to do it.

I've also allowed multiple choice on this poll due to some having to use theirs.

If I wasn't riding bikes I'd have to find that bike-fix elsewhere! I really can't get enough of the buggers :) I can't afford a car- but i don't think that really comes in to it though. It's like being on a roller coaster which you control, without the seats! just that bar to hold on to!

I do it for the fun of it and the great gas mileage! 55 miles per US gal sure beats the 17mpg my car gets...So I save about $30 a week on fill-ups.

Mines forced due to not being able to afford a car but more for the love of bikes.

Cars aren't any more pricey than bikes are they?

Got mine years before I got my car and because I always wanted one. Plus there was the need for independant transport for commuting.

Now I've got a bike just because I want one & I'd get a major sulk on without it. Don't really need it for commuting from where I am now (car is not too hideous) but the bike's really useful for getting in and out of london in the evenings.

really useful? extremely useful? absolute necessity?

So I don't know what that button is...

I ride to get to work, and sometimes for pleasure, i drive because i enjoy driving and im a far better driver than rider. I also enjoy to comfort, the dryness, the radio, the aircon of the car.

a few reasons:
1. grew up around bikes
2. cheaper than a car (not just the price of the car but insurance, tax, mot, and petrol costs, plus the costs i would add to it)
3. love the community of bikers...allways freindly
4. wakes me up on the way to work very very well
5. i can ride anything on 2 wheels, but mainly on 1
6. prefer doing maintenence on a bike than a car

I started riding in May 06 because I needed to have alternative transport for work because they run a 4-day parking policy for everyone, including directors. So CBT done, CBR125RR purchased and then I receive a parking permit for work as a shift worker, meaning parking anytime, anywhere, any site!

I enjoy my riding so much I stuck with it, simply to get away from 'it' all, no passengers, no one to pick up, nothing to drop off, just me and the open roads with no destination aiming for about 100miles each day of riding!

I hope to enjoy it more when the DAS is complete

I like anything fast. My first love is cars but there's no way i could afford a car that accelerates like my bike! (Even if I could I'd now keep the bike but if I'd had the money then I wouldn't have started riding)

i was brought up around bikes my whole life.
have always went or been took (when younger) to road races over here, UGP, NW200 etc and always loved bikes.
my dad had bikes when i was younger which i went on as pillion.
have rode motox (on & off - literally) since my teens but only passed my road test in october 05.
like somebody said previously, its the freedom of the bike which attracts me.
Just me, the bike & open road....no-one or nothing else. (apart from maniac car drivers!)
its simple,
i use the car, i enjoy the bike.....:D

Definitely for the fun. Which is the reason I now have a car too. I spent about 6 or 7 years bike-only and started getting grumpy at how my bikes got manky and how cold and wet I'd get.

Someone said to me you should never ride a bike because you have to, only because you choose to. I'm sure it doesn't apply to everyone, but I've found it does to me.

Now, every time I get on my bike its because I have chosen to, so it feels like a real privilege and I can *really* enjoy it :D

For fun! A little bit of independance...it's something I can enjoy on my own, but also the social side of things :D

Only bcause iam forced to:-
forced to save 40 mins every morning getting to work
forced to save another 40 mins getting home
forced to be away from the phone
forced to filter throuh traffic
forced to accelerate past virtually anything on the road
forced to enjoy cornering
forced to meet some very friendly people

yep - iam forced to do it.

I ride cos i like the noise of my bike when i get the revs up to 8000rpm and then roll off the throttle :D

and because i dont have any other personal mode of transport, even my legs refuse to work

I've been riding since I was 17 (which is a long time ago). I have very rarely been without a bike in all those years. I ride 7 days a week whatever the weather (except snow) and I still love it as much today as i did when I had a go on the back of a mates GT250 and he told me I was the worst pillion he had ever taken :D
I do have a car, but am thinking of selling it because it sits outside my house not used for months on end (it's done about 600 miles this year). The bike covers about 1000 miles a month.
I also wanted to pass on my knowledge onto other novice riders, so became a CBT instructor 7 years ago, just another excuse to ride bikes (& get paid a pittance for it), but if it introduces more people to bikes I will keep doing it.

I think that it is the feeling of being at 1 with the bike (having to lean into bends, getting the speed right etc) that sets it above driving a car plus you are on your own, just you & the bike. It's like a drug, I need more of it :smt119
Now I'm starting to sound like a bit of a wierdo so I'm going to shut up :D
But thats why I ride bikes.

started when i was 8 and never stopped. dad liked bikes, forced it on his son. I now ride everyday due to the fact ive never gotten around to sorting out a car licence. and cars seem so dull and i hate traffic.

I love the tingling sensation that transmits through a motorcycle seat, something I have found difficult to replicate in any other way. What other reason would there be?:)

I ride because it's the only thing on this earth that might make me look forward to going to work. :)

Easiest andbest way of getting to work.
Nice to go out for rides on my own/with friends/with GF as pillion.

Was brought up around bikes, dad racing, spending every weekend at race circuits while all the other kids played at home. Can't complain, i simply love motorsport, cars, bikes, anything with an engine. All happy days.

You can't beat the G-Force of a car, but then you also can't beat braking hard into a bend, taking the right gears, chucking it over, and accelerating out the other side.

Thats why a lot of fighter pilots also own bikes. Closest thing they can get.

I reckon a lot of bikers would also really enjoy Jetskiing as its fairly similar, but doesn't hurt as much when you come off (but rest assured, you can still do some damage!!).

Its a freedom, and a rush, and pleasurable relaxation at the same time.

because it's cool!!!

but really i just like the buzz. i like fast cars and bikes. i could afford a hot hatch, but i would then have to use this everyday. expensive tyres, expensive running costs, poor mpg...... so i got a basic car and my bike. now can go fast/ out for a blast when i feel i want to and use the car to cover the 2500miles a month i do for work.

now though i feel loads of different things about biking, the best just being out somewhere with stunning countryside glorious weather on your own without a care in the world!

For my health.

Waking up on a cardiac ward made me realise I had to do something else than work. Getting back on a bike after 20 years you are too busy staying alive to worry about work, family, money etc.

I just really love riding. I ride the B4116/B4114 to Coleshill every day and I thoroughly enjoy that road so it makes my daily commute that bit more exciting. To me, driving a car is a chore and I know I will never get the same buzz out of driving a car that I do from biking.
The other HUGE advantage is that because I ride a bike that handles so beautifully and provides plentiful smooth torque I have no wish to EVER buy a sports car. I know that no matter how much I spend on a 'supercar' the thrill probably wouldn't even compare with my SV.
You can keep your fancy 5 setting adjustable seats, CD players and staying warm and dry - I'll stick to the bike ta anyway.

I need a multi option. Partly for the fun and partly as I never bothered to do my car test!

Mainly the reason is because I can!! :D

I wanted a bike for years, but I was pushed into it more because I started commuting longer distances in a car that has crappy MPG.

I was spending £20/day in fuel for the car, which was stupid. So I bought a CG125 from a mate, passed my CBT, and started riding that to work & back.

Then she sheared her sump plug, dropped her oil, and ceased the engine solid. Instead of repairing that, I bought the SV.

Most of the time I ride because I'm commuting. Yes I could get a cheap car that ran on tuppence of fuel, but I live in North Wales. The roads around here are great for a bike.

However, I think nothing of going out on a sunny morning & wasting 3 tanks of fuel as well.

Three reasons for me.

A) Having the bike more than halfs the time it takes me to get into the office.

B) I enjoy motorsport, and as i have a company car I cant justify having a play car as well, mainly because of space issues.

C) I like to go fast, and I need something to get a 'that buzz' from

Becuase it was my first mode of transport, and I now have several bikes. I also use it to get to work. also the fact that traffic in the city is a nightmare! I would have a supercar but as they are so ££££, a bike is a whole lot cheaper for exactly the same fun, well even more fun actually. You see you get stuck in traffic in super car as well, don't you?
