This is interesting, I havnt heard of this before. I'm not sure I'm up to the responsibility of such a job, although its something that I would like to do in the future.
But lets say I wanted to do it now; could I use my own bike?
What a great charity. If the world knew more about organisations like this, bikers wouldnt have such a bad repuation amongst non-motorcyclists

I know I'm probably out of order, but this reads a bit like one of those Viz letters to the editor - top tips.:D
Sorry Alpinestarhero - I just had to say...I'll go hide in a dark place for the remainder of the weekend...:(

Interesting and sounds a good cause but a bit out of the way for me im afraid

Yes you use your own bike, during route training you will be shown which hospitals we run to & from. Until we get more volunteers we cannot cover to many hospitals at the moment their are 8 or so of which depending on which serv group
sussex/kent/surrey will depend which one's you go to.

Definitely a worthwhile cause! I see you/they don't (yet) cover any part of the midlands though.

I'd be interested in volunteering when you set up in Yorkshire.
Do i get a set of blue lights?
If i dont see the blood, then i wouldnt mind having a look to see if i could help out. If i get to see the blood, then, nope not for me.
Setup Serv in North Wales and consider yourself having a volunteer. I'm up for it.
I could happily get to pretty much any of these hospitals (http://www.wales.nhs.uk/hospitals.cfm) given a little notice. Although the Southern ones (like Cardiff) may be a little problem.
Gen in touch with whoever you need to hall13uk, it seems the main limiting factor to us volutneering is that Serv isn't in our area.

I was there on Sunday but didn't see you. I was going to have a chat.
Are you there regularly on Sundays?
Possibly a stupid question but could this invalidate your insurance?
Mine say's I'm allowed to ride my bike bwtween my house & "one place of work". i.e. My office in London, so I would invalidate my insurance if I went to my office in B'ham, I'm guessing that this could also consitute another place of work?

I suppose it could, as you'd for all intents & purposes, be a courier.
Still up for it though, and maybe Serv can negotiate with insurance companies for a discount of some sort (known riding times, routes, reason for riding etc)?

A few questions have been asked so i shall attempt to cover as many a poss.
You do not get blue lights Nor can you display/use blue lights
You have to obey all the road laws inc traffic lights, speed limits & road signs etc....
You use your own bike, It does not matter what bike you have i sometimes use my ducati if it is nice weather.
Serv will supplysome equipment but you will need a cargo net/bungee cord. you will only need 1 cargo net for an sv perhaps 2 for bigger bikes. or a handful of bungee cords
you will get a fluro vest, ID card & blood sign
No you not get to see anything you carry as it is all security sealed for safety
You recieve no payment it's CHARITY work
you should not invalidate any insurance policy you have as you are not running blue lights, & you will be obey all traffic laws. Also you are not doing it for reward or gain. But i would check with your broker anyway. It will only take 5 mins for peace of mindServ don't just carry blood
You will carry a various things, this will include plasma, platlets, blood, samples, xrays & there was one time when somone transported a nurse so you see their are up sides ;)
But you will never be asked to carry to much so as t's unsafe we are aware not everyone rides a honda pan i have a number or sports bikes in the charity
@ surrey we do have a control room which is located near the NBTU (National Blood Tranfusion Unit)
which you can stay in during you duty night it has a bed tv etc...
However our lease on this runs out soon but we are looking for a new place now.
All we @ serv ask is that you can give up your petrol & theuse of your bike/car for 1 day in every 2 weeks from 7pm til 6am
Help us now, You might need later

I would be 100% willing to volunteer but would my location be an issue?
What a good idea, South Wales not covered. I would volunteer.
Is there a need nationally or is it just in the heavily populated SE?
