View Full Version : Cheap hobbies

Why do my ‘cheap’ hobbies always end up in me getting carried away and me spending a small fortune on them?!?! :D
Most recent case in point … karting … mate at work was into karting, little 2-stroke race karts … I am a bit of a petrol head so it didn’t take much to get me keen in the idea when he said they were good for about a ton … “sounds a bit of a laugh” I said … “you can buy 2nd hand kart for <£300 that will do the job” he said … “go on, I’ll give it a crack, I’d spend about that all in on taking part in one bike trackday … at least there are several kart tracks in a sensible radius … Besides, if I don’t like karting, I can always just sell it on” …
So that is how it all started …
Sure enough I bought a kart for <£300 … and went out for my first drive … it was fun ...
I have been like 3 times now and with all the extra bits and spares I have bought since, (including a new engine, then a full engine rebuild where it blew up last time ) … I am running at >£1k already … and still have about a million and one things I wanna buy, so can see that doubling in the next few months …
Now how did that happen?!!? :D
It was the same with my minimoto .. started off as a ‘cheap’ idea … spent ~£100 on my first bike … I must have spent >£2k on minimoto now!! :D
Its bad!! :D
The phrase "more money than sense" springs to mind...

I've got a 7' house and run like this one --->
http://www.westawaypoultry.co.uk/Resources/showmai1.jpeg
They have a run in the garden too. I think they're great little pets, if you're certain you'd be happy with only keeping 2 or 3 hens then the eglu would be fine...chickens are kind of addictive tho so if you think you might want more then it's worth getting something bigger. The house they're in now was about £400. An eglu's about £300 iirc so there's not a huge amount in it really :)

Blue, for a new hobby, why not try masturbation?
It's cheap, relatively easy, and you may be rather good at it.

Bah chickens are for eating, although i prefer turkey.
If you want a pet bird get a parrot ffs....mine is class and if you have a chicken fixation it does a great rooster impression!
If i was to get another bird it would be an ostrich, but im led to beleive thats not practical :)
chickens are for watching tv with, not eating.

not sure who would get the zed, probably me but depends on what the other bike we get is. current idea is to get another v-twin. all kinda depends on what happens with our insurance claim. et's been looking at old firestorms but i think i'd prefer a naked bike. i change my mind weekly!

LouLou, you're the second person I know now that keeps chickens as pets.
Personally, I don't understand it, coz when I see a chicken, I see food.:p
One of the doctors on my ward was very concerned last week during the thunderstorms. She was worried her chickens would be struck by lightning.
I think I upset her when I said she could have chicken for dinner.
If I could have any animal as a pet, it would have to be an elephant. Love them.
Sorry for the derail:p

Hobbies.... My Mrs has had enough of my "hobbies"....
Cars - put new rubber on the ST, cost £500, service £200, Remap etc £500, and I haven't started on the engine yet...
Photography - Err no, spent too much on that last week
Bikes - Well I haven't had changed my bike for a couple of years, but I'm due a service, tyres, plus a chain & sprockets set. And that's before I hit the Alps for a week with a bunch of mates....
Fishing - That's cheaper, but I haven't had the time as I've been out with the car/bike/camera :smt021
PS My sister keeps chickens, 3 of them, called Dopey, Sneezey & Porsche (you can tell which one her grandson named can't you) She tells me the eggs taste great. Am going up there for a weekend soon so will have to try a couple.

Kryten certainly, er, must be when he turns human, so that is when he gets the DNA transmogrifier, the episode possibly called "DNA" roughly about series 4-5??
Ah Chickens.....
My Aunt used to keep them. I remember staying up there... I remember an evning when we were shutting them up for the night when my aunt started running around like a - ((headless errrrr)) shouting "I've lost one of my chickens"
We found it.
Turned out one of the horses had stepped on it on the way in but fortunately it had been raining rather a lot and the "way in" was something of a quagmire. The chicken, a Silky, had merely sunk...:smt085
So we dig out the chicken & take it into the house, wash off the worst of the mud, warm it up & dry it off with a hairdryer & give it a shot of brandy.
:drink:
Over the next few days the chicken makes resonable progress... the sun comes out.... my aunt lets it out to have a potter in the garden.
& one of the dogs eats it.....8-[
(Just thought I'd share...)

You could try 'Reading' as a cheap hobby - I mean, libraries are full of books so you don't even need to buy any.
Ahh - but then, following your previous examples, you'll get into a particular author...
... then want to buy all their books...
... then you'll just have to get the first editions...
... get them signed...
... = expensive hobby again.
Hmmm - maybe not then. :p
