I see a triple as the best of both worlds. the perfect compromise between a twin and a 4
but then people might say i'm biased ;)

Want a Street Triple next year, looks good and from all the reports goes good as well. Would love a speed triple but would be wasted on my usual journey.

Four for me.
That said its not really fair to compare the SV to an R6. Maybe if i rode a better twin?
I do miss the engine breaking, but i love the 'feed me more revs' howl from the R6.

I thought triples were big with you guys over there?? we had a big push for v-4s in the 80 and 90s. I just read something where honda is going to release a v-5 for street use. the big v twins are a fad here. most who drive them would not know what a I4 was. The HD cruiser fad..... oh well it gave us the SV....I have owned numerous I4 and this is my first V twin I must admit it does have certain advantages for street use that the I4 do not have.
Twins of those two, but I prefer V4's.

I love V twins but in a perfect world I would have a high revving, cutting edge V-4 over anything else. There is every chance there might be 1 or 2 to tempt us all from next year onwards.;) (They have to have some payback from all those development $ spent in Moto GP,simple really)

You've missed an option out.
What of those of us who have the taste to dream of hooligan-ised 1050 speed triples?

There are better and worse twins and triples and fours and singles and every other configuration out there.
Just having a given amount of cylinders isn't a good decider as to whether I like any particular bike or not.

mmmm....twins...
I'd start to get tired if there were more girls than that though ;)
Are we talking about riding them, or riding them?
Personally, I just look for long legs.... :smt115

I prefer twins but I'll be getting a 4 cyl litre (or bigger) bike next. Putting down the power from a litre v-twin on the road doesn't thrill me, especially in the wet and cold. A 4 cyl makes it easier to load the tyre smoothly. I'll miss the grunt the SV650 has, but a litre+ 4 cyl will have more grunt.

I like bikes that rev a lot! So four's a good but a high revving triple and you're in biking heaven!!!

I apologise in advance but I voted 4 pot.
I do love the sound of a V twin, I like the power curve, I lurve the fuel economy!
..but..
A four is so smooooth and can be soooo quiet and if needed can inject an adrenalin rush oh so sweet at the flick of a wrist. They are also big fat and comfy.
The twins I've had in the past albeit not V's have had horrible buzzy vibes and power curves so flat you could fall asleep while overtaking. Sound a bit cr*p too!
A 4 pot has a wonderful howl as it comes on cam! (sounds like a youtube dirty video) :)
All that aside I love this SV to bits...so much so its got me very interested in a big Duke! I am looking forward to a V-twin future.
My ideal bike if I had to choose one would still be something like a ZZR1400 though.
Effortless power..speed..comfort..wow factor..weather protection...the petrol, tyres & chain etc would take some affording though! :(

It comes down two 2 things.......
Do you want high horse power and rev to the moon?? OOORRRRR??? do you want to have torque and rev low?
Gone from a 650 SVs to a 650 Bandit.
Although the power is much much smoother, it takes an age to get into the rev band, by which point my friend (on an SV now) is already passing me. Once its in the rev range, its quicker than the SV.
Also, at lights, I miss the instant available power of the twin.
And I miss the noise.
I miss twins :( IL4 is ok, but I do prefer a twin.
Guess i'll have to try a triple and see if its the best of both worlds.

Indeed, having tried and owner just about every engine confirgration out there, the triple suits me best (and if it happens to be in a speedtriple or T'bird sport chassis, so much the better).
Cheers Mark.

This is as wrong an assertion as that which would have us believe SS600s have no torque*.
There are torquey fours and revvy twins. My Kawasaki 600 has a nice midrange and, contrary to the commonly held belief, it doesn't get breathlessly left behind by a torque monster SV650 unless it's spinning at turbine RPM, it has the added advantage of being revvy and making lots of top end - IF you want it to.
*Which, by the way, is wrong.

Well for most of my 24 years on off riding I've had inline 4r's of various flavours and my SV K2 is the first twin I've owned.
Don't know if it's just because it's a new thing to me but I really find twins an ease to ride and for now my favourite.
The only thing is I may need to go to a big bore again but for now the 650 will do.
dont mean to be awkward....
but what about the bike of the year....the trumph 675??? thats a triple...!!!
and what about stonking singles too...had a CCM 604 and that was crazy big fun mamma!!!
