My little boy is going in to be neutered tomorrow. He is a week shy of being 11 months old bless him... time has really flown!!!

Bit nervous about leaving my boy in someone elses hands and i do have a slightly guilty feeling about having his spuds lopped off http://www.icebaymals.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/boxedin.gif and i know he'll hate me for it but i know its for the best.

I think i have asked as many questions as possible but we have our pre-op check where i can ask the vet face to face instead of over the phone. He's having a nice breakfast this morning of Tripe and Nature Diet his 2 favourite things http://www.icebaymals.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif as he's not allowed to eat after 8pm. I know its a simple op, but i guess its a "mum's" job to worryhttp://www.icebaymals.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/redface.gif

Arctic breeds don't do so well on anasthetic so i am a little worried but i am sure he'll be fine and in good hands :)

Had Kasper neutered last week and he is going for his stichies to be removed tomorrow evening. He has been wearing his collar (HMV dog) type of thing since last Tuesday when we left the vets.

First day he came back he was a bit dizzy from the anesthetic but since then he has been absolutely fine! So don't worry too much about it

Thats what i have to keep telling myself.

It will make other dogs be a bit nicer to him as he wont smell like a big dominant dog (even though he thinks he is), it will take the stress out of b*tch's being in season as he wont be as interested and wont try and escape to get to them or scream his head off when one of them walks past. It will also take away the threat of testicular cancer which is quite common
in dogs when they are older.

Not only that but Malamutes are known for their same sex aggression... Lupo has never shown aggression to another dog, and to be honest i don't think he will, but with him working with his best mate Ranger, mates since Lupo was 15 weeks old, and Ranger being entire, i don't want them falling out as i wont have a team for the winter rally seaon.

Get him some Neuticles (http://www.neuticles.com/index1.html) put in so he's still got something to play with :D (without wanting to stereotype, sometimes the phrase "americans are wierd" seems relevant)

Our little Jasper, is also minus his family jewels. It was a domestic female decision as he would tend to make a little mess when ever he was happy. Both David and I would wince whenever they would talk about having him done. BTH, I don't really think he has missed them.

He is also minus his anal glands as these tended to get infected and after 3 bouts the vet advised their removal. That was a bit traumatic as for 6 weeks afterwards whenever he was exited he would leave a little present.

Thankfully that one did clear up once he regained control.

Thankfully Kodo has generally shown as much interest in bitches in heat as a housebrick would.
I know the pros and cons of having him done anyway but a) just didn't want to put him through an op without immediate need & b) smaller spainiel breeds like C0ckers have a great risk of dramatic weight gain and then heart problems after 'spud-loss'. So he's all there. ;)

We had out collie done when I was a kid though, but then he was a rampant fiend - and I was very cruel when he came home..
... I laughed cause he was walking funny. :(

I won't say don't worry - cos you will - but also much as you will want to luv n hug him when he's back home, don't be surprised if he's really sulky with you for a bit. He'll forgive you eventually though.

My dogs just had one of them collars on for a couple of weeks as he had a lump under his tail removed. He's really happy to have the cone taken off at the minute, but he doesn't know yet that he's got to have his other two 'lumps' chopped off in a month to stop this one coming back when he's older :(

Bottled out of getting koda nuts chopped-the girls are going in soon to get done as no more puppies will be coming from them-but my boy can keep his jewels for a wee while longer.

He'll have to "borrow" Rigors :)

Makes the old game of "Where's your ball" take on a new meaning.

Butchering the poor dog in his 'prime' shame on you :)

On a more serious note dont forget to lay down extra quilts/padding in the car as he will be unsteady when you collect him, what with the anaesthetic and the theft of his knackers.

Good advice thanks :) i wouldn't have thought of that #-oi'll put his bed in the back of the car and a couple of blankets. Will get the vet to help lift him into the car, as i have no chance of lifting all 45kg (roughly) of dog into the car:smt100

Only a girl could say that!! :) I'm intrigued to know how having his nads removed makes a dog happier? (or a bloke for that matter!)

My lads both still intact and no problems yet. The old boy is 15 next month, so is doing OK.

what i meant was that it must be kinda frustrating for a dog with balls to be prevented from shagging

My dog got castrated c. 15 years ago, and he very nearly bled to death - turned out he was a haemophiliac! :( He was on life support thing at the vets!

Our vet got a damn good telling off by the big animal centre authority in Bristol for not realising that dogs of his colouring and breed (bassett hound) were prone to it. Consequently, we weren't charged for his extensive treatment.

Anyway, he recovered, after having to wear a pair of my dad's pants for a week so he couldn't disturb his wounds.

Sam... I'm sure Lupo will be just fine - it very very routine, as you have said.

Had a phone call from the vets at 1.30 :) he was just coming round from the anasthetic. The op went with no problems at all but he is, obviously, in a bit of pain so has pescribed some strong painkillers for him. I have to pick him up at 3.45 just before start of afternoon surgery.

This website explains a few reasons why you should castrate dogs...

http://www.downlandvets.co.uk/Pages/Clinical/Pages/DogCastn.html

Lupo is not going to be shown, or bred from so no point keeping them, and as i mentioned above, Alaskan Malamutes are known for there same sex aggression ( in lupo's case aggression towards other males), he hasn't developped this yet and we want to stop it before it starts usually at around 12 to 14 months old. Not only that but he works with Ranger, another entire Male and i would really hate it if they fell out as they get on so well now :).

I just can't wait to go get him so i'm off now :D:D

Well i just got him home and he's fast asleep in the middle of the living room. He's got his massive collar on and isn't too keen on it. He's doing fine, just hot and uncomfortable. Wish i could do something more for him, i have the fan on full so he has some cool air, and he has plenty of water :). Managed to grab a neighbour to help lift him out of the car, and he was very happy to see me when i got to the vets, he even managed a wag of the tail :).

He is still unsteady on his feet and he looks drunk, droopy eyes and falling over, he is also crying :(. I have to give him boiled chicken and rice for dinner and just give him mouthfulls at a time as he might not be able to keep it down. And he starts on his anti inflamitories and painkillers tomorrow morning... non of this hiding pills in food, these ones supposedly taste like treats so thats one obstacle we haven't got. :D

Again thanks for all your kind comments, i know it was a standard operation, but it doesn't stop me from worrying. I have to keep checking him every 30 seconds or so just to make sure he is alright... i know he will be otherwise the vet would have kept him in but i just have to make sure!!

We have a followup on Sunday so hopefully by then he will be feeling a little but better:)
