Nice one....:D Nice Dressage Photo.....I will have to grab myself a copy. Stunning horse!
I ride horses too but don't ride much at the mo, can't afford to keep a horse anymore. This one was a bit of a nutter, only rode it so the owner could sell it, it used to rear and plunge and buck, was still safer than a bike lol....

Oh so many threads to reply to:
Paws....Wow, worth a visit then, I miss horse contact, I have ridden for many years now, my Dad was a jockey in South Africa (flat racing - we dont jump race over there) so I got the bug at quite a young age, didnt start jumping till I was about 12 though.
Arty, yes that is me jumping, its not a big cross country fence but that horse was an absolute pig.
I rode it for a client of Paddy McMahon's because he hated it so much he eventually gave up on it. It did give me a few very frightening moments though but we got there in the end.
Wow I had no idea how many of you ride horses (as well as the iron ones!)

Awwww Arty, he's Gorgeous! - extended trot good seat position (bet the boys will have something to say about that comment ...lol).
Fond Memories I bet :)

I guess it may just be novice (or a very young horse) as they're riding with a snaffle rather than double bridle.
I used to be a pain rather than my horse when it came to dressage. Bad introduction to riding apparently - I used to tempt the ponies in the field behind my house when I was about 5, get them close to the fence with a carrot then get on board and hold on to the mane! :smt003 The following summer I found a book on Native Americans that had illustrations on how to make a proper Hackamore bridle - a few attempts and bits of rope later and I'd made my first bridle.
I was riding and jumping them in that field without saddle for about two more years before my parants consented to taking the 10 mile trip to the nearest riding school every weekend. Even then they had to convince them to take me as they normally didn't accept kids younger than 10.
The end result is I have a very natural seat and feel for the horse - but my 'technical' skills leave instructors in tears. ;) I'm almost dreading what they'll make of me when I start Uni as they have a really good dressage programme - I'll probably be used as the 'bad example' and how you start teaching from scratch.
I stuck to showing in hand - Arabs and Shire's mostly. Talk about extremes.

Wowsers K,
Yeah I didnt have a great start either!....Jockey Dad = very short stirrups, my first instructor hit me with the schooling whip and took my stirrups away for a month... South Africa isnt known for it's patience or child friendliness...
But ahhhh.....I had a fantastic chestnut American Saddler gelding when I was a junior rider who was great without schooling. I used to event him too he was a great looker, will have to try to scan some pics.
I used to ride him with a piece of baling twine around his neck and go off down the road with my mate on the back jumping ditches etc (hmm must have been mad)
Whoot! you are in Northants too, we will have to round up the gang for your next show and have a little get together to support you.
:grouphug: :smt038 :winner:

K, like you I leant to ride well before I came into contact with a saddle.
Just used to attach a pair of ropes to the halter, grip with the knees and simply go with the horse.
I hate dressage. What is the point of all that. Show jumping is boring exercise as well.
Horses are made for several purposes
1) hunting
2) point to point
3) pulling a classic hearse. (The farrier we use to use now does this for his whiskey money)

Possibly although unless its changed (last rule book I have is from 2001) the Double doesnt become compulsory until Advanced :)

Its a sport, and very satisfying when youve trained your horse work in a balanced elegant calm way. Cant beat the feeling of smooth flowing canter halfpass - I can tell you :D

Thanks - got an 8 once for his extended trot in a Medium test. He wouldnt have gone further than Medium because you need to introduce flying changes for Advanced Medium and his counter canter was soooooo well established
wahoo, loads of horsey people on here!
Jen, i mainly ride my father inlaws horse as i cant handle my mother inlaws, hes VERY strong! shes doing dressge on him, i'll have to introduce you to her and the boys.
Heres me riding annie (friends horse) ALWAYS rode her barabcak until she spooked one day and i came off, got dragged across a road and up a gravel drive (was holding onto the reins and wouldnt let go):

Ryan, my mothers inlaws, hes a HUGE handful, VERY strong, but when he behaves hes wonderful at dressage, i cant/darent ride him as hes too mad for me:

Another horsey type here aswell.
My step daughter has a 8yo 12hh grey welsh mountain pony called sparky.
Lovely quiet thing thats perfect for her but about as fat as they come with very strong shoulders so when she gows out of him we will try out the drive part of him as he was alledgedly a ride and drive pony with the previous owner.

Hell, this post has taken on a life of its own since I last looked at it, and it's not all **** taking ;) The pic was at the Scottish Young Horse Champs in May- Vivaldi V is only five. I think Jo normally rides him in Novice class.
If you are into Dressage, look out for NH Prima Donna, ridden by Catherine Eardley - she's my riding teacher and Donna is her 4 year old - she won a couple of classes at the National champs at Addington a couple weeks ago and according to one of the judges, looks like she is going to be the best young horse in the country.

Hey, what was your dad's name? being from Durbs I might have heard of him.
This is one I took at the horse trials at Hendersyde park last weekend.

Hey, what was your dad's name? being from Durbs I might have heard of him.
My Dad is oooold! He is 74 now so it might be before your time, Cliff Olivier, but you might know my cousins Michael (deceased) and David Cave.
David had a bad fall and is now the riding master at Summerveld Jockey Acadamy.
Oh my God, small world.......You're from Durbs?? I used to keep my horse at Durban Pony Club after I moved to Morningside but I kept him in Shongweni at Sybil Plummer's yard before that.
I was mates with:
Ryan Harvey
Jenny Drew
Julia Drew
Jenny Harms
Chantell Lavowe (or however you spell her surname)
Paul McCormick
Camilla Scott
Heather Hamilton
Juanita Baxter
Katherine, Lynsey and Paula Hamilton
Martin, Karen and Rick Minnett
.................................................. ................and those are just the ones I can remember for now!
