I'm looking into getting a Motor cross bike and have been offered a Yamaha YZ250. Now I'm new to motor cross would this bike be too powerfull for me?
Any help and advice would be appreciated!

They'll all scare the willies out of you and leave you a quivering blob of jelly, even a 125. It's the physical punishment more than the power that is the obstacle really, it's the second most physically demanding sport apparently and I'd agree! A 250 is fine, you won't have to worrry so much about keeping it on the boil.
When you get it there's places that will let you run round all day for £15.

The 2stroke 250s are lighter than the 4s and the power is on or off, but seriously on or off. you might be better off with a 250 4stroke?
It also depends what you want to do with it?
Trail riding with your mates or racing?
If Trail riding you might even be better off with a 400 4 stroke (wr400 which is mental) or a drz400e which is over weight and slightly under powered but great for fun trail riding and still over to wheely in 2nd with the throtle.

Listen fella, if your a nervous rider this is not for you no matter what the cc of the bike. If however you like the buzz of speed, testing both your riding skills and physical condition to the limits and..VERY IMPORTANT....you can accept that you are definitely going to hit the ground on more than one occasion...stay well clear.Seriously.

One thing I'm not is a nervous rider! I was just after a bit of advice before I jump in and buy a bike.

In that case mate.Stop p*ssing about and buy at LEAST a 250.You will have a riot!:p
i had a go on my mates rm250 a couple of years ago did'nt get any higher than second gear (scared the sh!t out of me at first the power delivery) all round the track but excellent fun over the jumps.
as for the power you can go as easy or as hard as you want and it also depends on your weight and size
go to a MX shop and ask them for some advice

I used to have a CR250. It was such a hoot. You don't need to worry so much with gears than with a 125 as there always seems to be power. Apart from falling off a lot I loved it but I had to get rid of one or the other.
:-( May look into getting one again soon though

Ive never riden a 125 motocross but from what I know you really need to keep it in the power band which can be tricky if your not used to doing it, lots of gear changes, but you will pick it up soon enough.
Most will be kick start = hard work when its hot and your nackered.
The most important question (forgive me if youve answered it and I missed it) is what are you going to do with it? Trails or full on motox.
And you will fall off I garentee, everyone does, it just needs a different mind set to road riding

how big/strong are you?
TBH i prefered my cr125 compared to all the 250's i had (about 4) but it did take a hammering.
125 is easier to start than a 250,& a bit lighter.............. if you want to kill yourself get a 500

I've never had a 250 so can't really compare but for my 11 stone, a 125 is plenty. I love the insane power band (on a 2 stroke) and the fact that it's light comes in handy as you inevitable have to pick it up out of the mud a fair bit. Try pushing it up a bloody big hill in the wet and you will want it to be as light as possible!
Having said all that, I'd love to try a 250...or a 500, yeah bring it on!

Well I'm 6ft tall and weigh 14 stone also Im a Bricklayer by trade so you could say I'm not a weakling.
Thanks for all the replies:cool: I'm going to get the 250 and if I don't like it I can always swap it for a 125!

OK ready for the stupid question.......
Are road legal MX bikes OK as I dont have a form of transporting a bike to/from a track? (I dont have a bike yet but like Billy I'm looking into taking this up). I'm going to try out an off road course first!

They're fine, you just need to find the right one. An enduro prepared bike is a good choice, they're raw crossers with the bare legal minimum on them, barely functional yet legal lights (not that you have to have lights for MOT) and a little squeaky hooter on the bars for the horn.
Proper MotoX tyres aren't road legal usually, they say not for road use on them.
Any recommendations on what one? I'm hoping to get booked on a H**da off road course on 24th August to give me a taster :D
(Sorry for the hijack Billy)

My vote would go to KTM, but I am biased as I've got one , and have done for the past 10 years! Go down to your local track and speak to some of the guys there. Look for someone on an enduro and go ask them questions. People love talking about their bikes. Of course they will tell you theirs is the best but you'll hopefully find out what to look for and how to avoid buying a s**ter.
Invest in some decent boots and armor too. If you can't afford the proper stuff, old paintball armor is OK - it's to avoid being hit with stones flying out from the guys tyres in front.

I've had a WR250 recommended to me for this - 4 stroke but likes to rev. Or if you want more a KTM400 which isnt quite as insane as the 450s. I was hankering for one I can use for greenlaning and maybe switch to super-moto later - hence the look at something a little larger than the 250.
have a look at the KTM 200 exc, i was thinking of having one of these when i conidered a trail bike as they are the best of both worlds

BILLY,
It might be an idea to book on an off road experience day, as a taster before forkin' out on a crosser. I did a Yamaha off road experience in Wales & thought it was Brilliant. They had a number of different bikes, ranging in size from 125's up to 450's, 2 & 4 strokes & you can have a go on different ones throughout the day.
Gaz.
To late I bought the YZ250 I'm picking it up tomorrow:cool:

i personaly would of gone for one of these, * not for road use * just for the death trap rating alone, im sure they should have just the back wheel the front is hardly ever on the ground... ;) the KX250 commoly joked at that its so noisy it will cheese of a deaf grandma??? dont know why though i like the crispy noise
it looks kinda strange clean lol, :D
