View Full Version : Should I break my Curvy SV?

Hi, I'm expecting to replace my curvy SV very soon as its getting on a bit now and I'm reluctant to spend money on it when I could invest in a new bike.
A dealer offered me about £800 quite a while ago when looking at a trade-in as its an SK2 'S' but it now has 74,000 miles and 3 winters under its belt and has all the usual corrosion you would expect, it also has a bad drinking problem with oil and feels a bit shagged generally, down on power, brakes not what they, fuel consumption is getting worse etc etc.

I thought I might be better off breaking the whole bike? its has good plastics all round (inc lowers) headlights. dash and all the other things folks normally need to repair a crasher, I thought I could probably get more for my money if I'm prepared to do a little graft and accept a half stripped bike in the garden for a while :D
What's peoples thoughts? I'm quite tempted to trade up to an SV1000S as I've been happy with the SV and I'm just piling on such high mileage everyday. I don't want to shell out 7-8K on some BMW or something to just make it worthless in 3 years time again. I don't think another SV650S is the right choice as I'm thrashing it too much on the M'way, I guess a bigger capacity bike will cruise the M'way better at lower revs?

Hi Mike, I do actually have a spare set of used lowers in Black (bought them ages ago just in case) but one of them (I think) has been cut to fit the old style R&G crash bungs. R&G modded the bungs a few years back so you didn't need this but I bought these before that, are they still of interest?
What's the going rate for a set of curvy lowers?

shelleyamy - What side did u have the off with? If it you went down on the left side I may take the right hand side off your hands.. i.e. we could split the lowers that Mags is offering

bearing in mind the engine is worthless with 74k on it, I can't see you making the £800, let alone significantly more(to make it worth your hassle) by breaking it??? Unless you are really fortunate and find some complete idiots ... eBay is good breeding ground for that!!! :D

The best way is to make a list of what you think is sellable and realistic prices you can expect to get ... I don't think it will add up ...

i repared my sv with bits off ebay and sold the bits i had left and the whole job virtuly cost me pennies, sv bits sell well and for good prices.

also getting rid of parts takes an age, i started braking my crash damaged sv about 6 months ago and still have loads of bits left cause no one wants them, even on ebay with no reserve people just dont want bits like the air box or the stock clip ons although plastics are worth quite a bit. It might be a good idea to flog the lowers and then trade it in as a halfaired model. Alternitively i have a peferctly fine engine which you could drop in which has done 17.5k and that might make your life a bit easier and it would also increase the resale the value. either way i would bother breaking it cause its too much hassle.

I would need to have then sprayed,so i could ask them to fill in the crash bung holes.
No idea what they normaly go for,but let me know how much you need,and i will price the paint/repair work.

Yeah left hand damage,but my right hand side has a lug missing,which i have overcome with a neat little Suzuki philips screw by the front air intake.
