Is about the time this happened, but ain't got a lot of cash.
Don't want registry or the like.
Has anyone any experiences that don't cost a fortune that they might suggest?
Open to ideas, as i have NO idea on this lol ;)

Getting married? Whatever for! Very Victorian in my mind.:D
mid range cost - between £9 and £15,000 i reckon
get married on a friday, its cheaper.
get married in a manor house or similar, have the whole function there, wedding, reception and evening do.
rent rather than buy the outfits, unless you have a smart suit you're happy to get married in

Or drive to Gretna, get married, drive home.
Look around for unusual venues that people might not have thought about. I got married at Legoland (first wedding there) and as they were new to the game we got it at a lower price. They nearly doubled the prices once they realised what they COULD charge people.
Also, get married during the week as most places charge less for a Friday wedding for example. And thats not just the venue, its the florist, the registrar...
Also keep an eye on the costs of the little things as they soon add up.
We got all the bridesmaids and the men in the wedding party to pay for their own outfits. A bit tight but we'd just bought our first house and there was a lot of pressure to have this bridesmaid or that bridesmaid so this sorted it out. Saved hundreds of pounds that way.
For a honeymoon, speak to the travel agent who can then set up an account for your guests to pay into to pay for the honeymoon rather than give you a gift. This saves more money.
You can also use these credit cards that give you cash back, so as long as you pay off the balance every month you will get money for free (basically). And as a wedding will cost a good few grand that will give you a good amount of cash back for nothing.
HTH
We got married at the church across the road - one of them 'united reformed' types. Had the evening do at the Grecian Taverna (Plymouth people will know where that is) - which was ideal because you all get fed on whatever your budget is and there was a free disco thrown in, because there's one there every night - bargin!!
We didn't buy loads of flowers, we got hold of some reasonable wine for drinkies at our house, there were no limo's or anything else. Just so long as people know where to go and what's happening, they'll be happy with anything...more or less. It's a party - for them it's free except transport and accom.
No gimmicks, no frills - you've got each other. Have the ceremony - have a party. Get a relative/friend to do the photo's.
Sorted.

You're getting married!!! - the ceremony and reception is the cheap part!!!!!
Plan ahead as the wedding itself can be regarded as the easy start up!!:D:
1 Potential offspring - university costs
2 Offsprings possible weddings will cost more than yours and, if you have a daughter...
3 Divorce - oh sorry, I won't go there ;)
Congratulations - IMHO it is wonderful (well 2nd time around in my case!! :p) :flower::drink:
How to keep costs down...
Difficult one...
Try low key and selected invites...
Buffet rather than posh sit down waiter job - DIY you can get pretty good food prepared by the likes of Sainsbury's, Asda etc which they prepare fresh on platters just go in store and ask
Use Methodist Church facilities - they don't allow alcohol :D Ok bad idea!!
One bridesmaid/Maid of honour (bestest friend type thing) and make then feel like its a honour for them so they volunteer to pay for their own kit :smt003
Only one decent Wedding car - for the bride of course - NOT the Ford Cortina!!
Err, 'bring a bottle'?
Tap up Mums and Dads!!
get married mid week its cheaper and in winter too photographers and venues are cheaper in winter
instead of having a full sit down meal for family then an evening reception
get married late in the afternoon then have a hot and cold buffet and evening reception
we are doing ours quite cheaply (hopefully) we are getting married in a hotel but thats not cheap its extra for the registrar to come to the hotel but then you don't need to hire cars so it evens out a bit
Congrats mate, do what you and your missus want, at the end of the day its YOUR day, it,d probably be cheaper to fly somewhere and get married their, rather than inviting a whole load of peeps to a glorified **** up, cos once the mothers get involved....get your cheque book out.... good luck with it though.

Congrats!! I'd also support the idea of getting married in the winter - there's less demand for venues, etc and they tend to be a bit more lenient re requirements (e.g. will accept bookings for smaller numbers, be more flexible, etc)

My sister did it for £2500 last year, no kidding. Civil service though. Walton hall near Warrington, council owned so cheap venue. 30 or so people. Ebay shop for the dress. Costco for the cake (about a tenner I think). Wedding breakfast was a suprisingly good carvery at Walton Hall. I did the photos. Think that covers the main things. It can be done! Mine's gonna be more like the full £10k though I think, got me eyes shut!

You might laugh, but a mate made it a condition of getting married that he did it that way and he did just that! They've been married about 5 years now and are still together/happy. I'm slowly talking the gf round to this way of thinking and she is (as more of her friends get married)seeing what an unenjoyable ball ache, not to mention utter waste of money a "traditional" wedding often is...
That said, if you/she really wants a traditional wedding and then to you, it wouldn't seem like a waste of money. As others have said, there are ways of doing it more cheaply, without it seeming naff/done on a shoestring. One couple I know made all the invitation cards, dinner table name cards, etc. themselves, got relatives to do the buffet at the reception, mates to photograph it, etc. and if you didn't know you'd of assumed they spent a packet.
Coupled with the C of E's proposal (which looks like it's going ahead) with regard to basically allowing people to get married anywhere, even if they have no link to the parish, even a church do can be had quite cheaply.
I'm no skinflint and I recognise that it's an important day, I just feel that a lot of the meaning of a wedding gets lost under all the paraphenalia, as well as the cost being totally uneccessary. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, because I'm not married and perhaps it is all worth it, but I've been to more weddings than most people (used to sing in a choir that were used a lot for weddings) and that's the feeling I get.
i would go abroad and have a party in the pub when I got home. that way no big dress/suit required, bikini and flip flops (ladies) who cares what the guy wears, no one looks at him. flowers can be stolen from hotel gardens. no big meal bill to feed relatives you have not seen for 20 years and will not see again. no cars. oooh getting quite in the mood lol only joking - can hear the sound of bf collapsing onto floor in convulsions.
mid range cost - between £9 and £15,000 i reckon
...:-k....in that case just slip them a tenner and tell them to keep the change.

No idea how to fund but we have 2 years,
were getting married in the winter casue thats when we want it but it will have to be at the weekend due to geographical locations. The venue is likley to be £3k alone for the lunch time recpetion!!.

What he said. That's how me and Mrs Tiger did it. For a tickle over $300 we had Elvis/Pink Cadillac/Church/Preacher/ Licence/Flowers/Photos/Video/ and paid somebody to be a witness. When we got home we had a party :drink:
We were on holiday anyway so flights and accommodation were effectively free...

Friends of ours are doing exactly that. Unless you're a pair of teenagers just starting out in the world chances are you don't need plates or bed linen!

me and the other half got married last month (27th July) the whole wedding cost just under a £1000, that was a reg office do though. One bridesmaid and bestman so that cut down on the dress costs. I got my dress in a sale, husbands kilt was on offer (kilt, shirt and sporn for £100) no cars just taxis, my flowers came from ebay as did the invitation. Scottishrawker took the photos and our friend videod it for us, also the rings were got in the winter sales. Oh and the cake was from tesco (yummmmmy stuff). We went back to the local pub with local caterers (the most expensive part of the day) and we all had a brilliant time:drink:, didnt bother about a reception more hastle and more money than we had.

CONGRATULATIONS
I just got married in Cuba and it did not cost that much.
We paid for a 2 week holiday all in 5 star for £2000 ish and added the "wedding package" on top which was £550 and that included everything from flowers to music.
Pictures on the beach with white sands are just fantastic, photographer was £300 for 150 pics in alban and CD with 4-5MB digital origanal images.
We also took mums and dads with us so the cost went up abit but you don't have to take them!

Do it in another country :D I will be getting married in America next year - though admittedly that's because SWMBO is american! - and it's about half the price it'd be here. I think we're paying/budgeting around $20k, instead of £20k!
We are getting a good deal on the photography because her older brother and his wife are these top-dog fancy photographer types, that's saving us something stupid like $10k. But I don't know if we'd pay that much if we didn't have a good deal!

We went to the Bahamas and got married on the beach. No tux, no fuss. Did the wedding and honeymoon all in one shot. We went by ourselves but had a reception ( more like an island themed kegger:drink: ) after we got back. I think the entire thing (trip and catered reception) cost us about $9k.
I spent more on my divorce party than I did on our wedding...fact.
And a bloody good divorce party it was too.

I got married in Matlock Bath last Friday (10th August)
Marrige & reception at the New Bath Hotel
My now wife say's approx cost £4000 for everything
Get married on a Friday afternoon, cheaper & you only have to feed everybody once,
Pick a hotel with a wedding licence & good gardens(for the photo's), drinks may be pricey but that will keep the drunkeness down to a merry high,
Spend the extra & get a ceilidh band (like www.Beggarsbeliefband.co.uk (http://www.Beggarsbeliefband.co.uk)), everybody gets up & gets involved instead of the usual pants disco,
Everyones got digital camera's now so don't get a photographer, just download everyones photo's, the natural photo's are the best rather than the posed for one's.
Practise for the first dance, don't do the hang on for dear life wedding shuffle, we did a tango to the Red Elvises 'Tango', felt a tit doing it, but it went down a storm, Great day
Sod the cake, speaches, Bridesmaids and stuff like that, they take up too much of your time and you have better things to worry about,
What ever you choose, the day will make all the stress of planning just disapear,
Good luck

Apparently "I am," is the shortest sentence in the English language.
Surely "I do," must be the longest...
Wishing you and yours many happy years together mate, whatever you decide to do. ;)

Sod relatives you never see, family you can't stand. Ensure potential mother in law is well dead and at least 6ft under. Have a quite wedding with a few close friends. A good meal and a few bottles of wine. Yes I got married for .....
£100 for the wifes frock
£75 for my suit
about £30 for the wedding itself
£300 lunch.
OK that was 15 years ago. We wanted to get married. We couldn't have cared about anyone else. Spent our wedding night at home. but the b'stards in my local came round and dragged us out to a surprise party.
BTW it is our anniversary come up next week, what does one buy for 15?
