Try Pidgin (http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pidgin.im%2F&ei=zP_CRvloh6TCAZO2mK0I&usg=AFQjCNEN3hlVu1i-Sp_uP0r2JLip986AGQ&sig2=tAWKObUwQhYACqrbWkF7ZA)
Free IM client that talks to ALL the networks - it even does IRC !!!!!

I use Trillian.
Or there's a web based messenger called eBuddy which connects to at least MSN and Yahoo (I'm sure it may also do others).
Both of these are FREE :)
Although Trillian also offer a "paid for" version.

Flash git
MSN on my mobile works ok :D
Sorry Plowsie realise that's not much help
I'd have thought that there would have been some "notice" to read that pointed out whether or not you'd be charged for using it or not?

You'll probably be charged for GPRS data usage if it's on your mobile - you'll need to check what your tariff is, but i don't think MSN will require a huge amount of data.
