curvy plastic: inside cover for dash/mirror

Sorry in advance for the trouble I'm having describing this.

On a '99 curvy, there's a small black plastic piece that covers the inside of the mirror mounts, which attaches to the front fairing and slots into the dash plastic assembly, beneath the front screen.

I had an off and had to take apart the whole front clip; in putting it all back together, I find that slotting this piece into the dash plastic assembly is a royal pain in the neck.

Are there any tips/tricks to getting this to slot in easier? The "brute force" method will eventually work :), but because the screw that holds on the dash assembly is covered by this piece, I can't loosen it to adjust things before I tighten them down.

If this is too stupid a description, let me know and I'll post some pics tonight.

I know exactly the pieces you mean and I've left the right hand side one off because it's such an **** to get back on. I could try some blu tack to stick the rubber grommeted nut to keep it in place, but I really am not that bothered. The additional bits don't seem to stop the mirrors wobbling anyway.

Is it the black triangular piece of plastic about 150mm long and 100mm wide?

If so, its simple on my 99 so something may not be located properly on yours. Insert luggs at bottom first (near clocks), push top part home and then insert screw and tighten, but not too tight as its not structural, hence the reason it doesnt stop mirror vibes.

Have you got the rubber boot the right way around that the screw fixes to?

I (think from memory) it can be a bugger to re-attach to the screen, used spit and a pair of long nose pliers to pull it through while supporting the frame when I changed screens.

Put some pics up if its a different part.

It sounds like the same part you describe. The crux of the problem is "inserting the luggs at bottom first" - specifically the clocks-side L-shaped tab, which interferes with part of the front fairing that slots in beneath the clocks' facing.

I may have to add some pics; unfortunately it's late, and I will be out all weekend. I wonder if I don't have something in the right place; maybe I'll loosen the screen a lot and work at it from that angle. I'll have another go when I can and resurrect the thread w/pics if I don't get it.

Like you say, it's not structural so I guess I won't lose sleep over it; I just like things to go back together properly (if I can't hide my ****-ups) :).
