View Full Version : advise on selling a bike on ebay
would it be best to start at 99p with a reserve of close to what i want or start closer to what i want.
im not too keen on putting it on ebay, but i may end up doing so.

It is better that you start off with a higher starting bid also it's cheeper to list also make sure the auction ends on a weekend as you will have more people ready to bid! And be honest with your descripion and get a deposit via paypal and cash on collection that way they can't back out!

Depends how much you want I would think - I don't have experience of selling much (I think I've sold 1 thing in 7 odd years) but buying, and watching other auctions that I've been interested in, shows that everyone on Ebay wants a bargain (stating the obvious, I know).
Due to that - if you start it with a price closer to what you want, then it might just be too high to be seen as a bargain, and it won't sell - but if you start it at 99p with a reserve near to what you want, and you DON'T reveal your reserve like some people do, it seems to entice bidders in...and in my case I will watch that auction instead of just ignoring it because it's too high.
I've sold 2 bikes on ebay so far. Both had a start price near to what I wanted, both were sold well before the aution ended. Best thing is, because I cancelled the listing after each one sold early - no % taken by ebay

I tried my SV on ebay 2 weeks ago. used a starting price at the lowest I would accept for my bike, ended up with 16 people watching it, but no bids, Although it was cheap, it was prob too expensive to get bidders in, trying to decide if I will relist (if it sells the second time you don't have to pay the £8 listing fee for both)
Why not list it on Bike Trader? Just wondering why people use ebay so much these days then bike trader tends to do the job?

99p and no reserve!
High starting bids are a put off and reserves are terrible. If you have a cast iron price you must achieve, use a second ID to bump it up to that. If it didn't get there it wasn't worth that to anyone.

The problem is I have seen sv's that are well priced sitting on Bike trader for months on end. and at £44 for 3 weeks, it isn't exactly the best way to throw the cash away.
It's 18 quid for two weeks on the web and if the bike is prices right they seem to go really fast. last bike I had went to a caller who called 3 hours after I had posted and drove up fromLondon to collect, paid in cash as well.

It's only cheaper if your bike doesn't sell. If you put a reserve on and it sells for that amount you get your reserve back which is £3.00. It works out exactly the same but if you start low with a reserve you'll generate loads of interest, bids and watchers. I would go for that IMHO
anyone tried MCN ?
Not tried selling there but bought the zed from there.

that is the best way to sell anything on e-bay, i think that its not 100% alowed though so be carefull if you go down that road.
Ive bought a bike and sold a bike on ebay, no problems on either. I guess its just down to personal experiance and who you end up dealing with.
good luck however you do it.

in my case I will ignore an auction if there's a reserve because i will assume the reserve is too high.
paid in cash as well.
Next time you're selling a bike let me know. I've got 3 grand in buttons wearing a hole in my pocket if you'll accept them instead

Not only that, but it is illegal and is exactly the same as "shill bidding" at a real life auction.

I got a phonecall from autotrader, saying they had seen my bike in scot-ads and offered me a discount for selling, instead of the £44 they'd do it for £30 for all 3, scottish biketrader, autotrader and online, but had to do it over the phone. I have no way of checking if it is genuine although it did sound it, I have never heard of this before, and there is so many scams going on which makes me worry slightly. I didn't think they'd be into cold calling, and I have no way of checking if the phone number that called me is genuine. Anyone else had this before?

I told them to whistle, and they tried again in a week or so.

Nobody was in the market for a yellow curvey. Donf forget one of the major problems with ebay is location. I had the chance to buy a dirt cheap CRF250.... only problem was that it was in jock-land. Too far to travel.
The ad was good, the pictures were good, but I think its possible that people could have been slightly put off by you publishing the ****-take emails.
Re-list it mate, it should be free.
