Why do people ride without gloves? A blue pointy SV pulled up at the side of me at a level crossing, rider had no gloves on and it was raining!

people just don't like the best set of tools they'll ever get and only get 1 fully functional set.

Yeah, you only get one set of hands. I wear gloves for almost everything these days. When I'm spannering I have either rubber or kevlar ones depending whether the threat is oily gunk or losing a knuckle.

possibly one of the most stupid things to do if you ride a bike, you can only learn once with that mistake normaly, thing is in an accident you dont normally feel your hands hit the floor if you wear gloves, kinda says something doesnt it. . . . :D

Both times I've been off my gloves have taken the brunt of the damage, the first one I landed on my thumb and broke 5 of the carpal bones, no glove would have stopped that, but did save me losing a lot of skin. the second one (wedsday :() the palm of one of my gloves is well worn away, if this had been skin it would have been nasty!

IMO its also dangerous to ride without gloves as who can properly control a bike with numb fingers?

I got absolutly....well told off...for not wearing gloves when i used to ride my scooter, by my dad. He told me that if I mashed up my hands, it wouldnt get healed for a long time

I now also know, after conversing with a doctor, that if you crash and dont wear gloves, and grind through the skin on the underside of the wrist, this can cause alot of nerve damage which can affect the whole arm

I always wear gloves now

Saw a guy the other day, on a scooter, he had lots of gear on, proper jacket, jeans, boots, decent lid, yet no gloves! This seemed daft to me as why bother with all the gear when your hands are the first thing to touch down. In that situation I'd rather have gloves instead of the jacket.

I had an off many years ago on my Lambretta. Well off my Lambretta really.

Basically, I was travelling rather fast, well as fast as a 125cc Lambretta will go, when I came to a bend in the road that I realised I was not going to make. I had to make a split second decision. Either continue trying to go round the bend already knowing that I wasn't going to get round it, or take the left turning half way round the bend. I opted for the left turn quiet simply as that road was the unknown, the road I was on was a certain accident.

In hindsight both were certain accidents and with this hindsight I would have continued on my path and taken my chances. As I got half way round the left hand turn I realised that the complete road was covered in gravel. The front wheel washed out in a nano second. I did the natural reaction thing and shoved both my hands out in front of me to save my face meeting road.

I had no gloves on. I was still picking out gravel parts from the palms of my hands a week later. Now this was all on a scoot that was only going about 30mph. That was one sore lesson that I learnt very quickly.

+1 but i used to also ride in a t shirt on my ped, then i realized the error of my ways and got kitted up, came off at 25 on me 125 in jeans and it went straight though them and took half my knee off

When I came off a few years back I had armoured leathers on (and gloves)and a piece of roadstone still managed to find a way through to my hipbone - and another deep into my hand. I could touch my hipbone with my little finger. Perhaps it was doing it that made it get infected:rolleyes:  It took months to heal up properly, I used to have to go to the doc's every day for the nurse to change the dressings coz it used to ooze the nicest yellow pus you ever did see. That was except for the first week when they did it in the hospital, and the second week when I had the district nurse call round at home (it was a :-({|= rather than a :smt055as she was a dragon who didn't like motorbikes and I just added to the story collection about menace bikers that she dined out on:cool:)

As one of middling advancing years and having ridden since I was 17, I was riding at a time when you didn't have to wear a helmet. It was a great feeling with the wind in your (very long at the time ;)) hair, but strangely, I always wore gloves. Chills me now, thinking about riding without a helmet, and even though the bikes were a lot slower then, you can do a lot of damage to hands even at 30 mph (let alone your head)

damn right you could, and you still see idiots, mainly scooter riders rding with the lid strap undone....whats that all about?

apparently it takes 1/3 of a second to through skin at 30mph....ouch!!

but " they is bad and well blick " so it gives them extra cred . . .
saying that, my friend had a Dejing 125 (ebay special) not quite the same as my Yamaha DT but getting there, still his seemed to find its way into the hands of a dirty chav at some point 6 months down the line,

me and my friend were coming back from nottingham, he was pillion on the SV back into long eaton and lo and behold my friends bike comes out of a side street... obviously not him riding it, so we follow for about 6 miles in to donnington, aand i truely mean this... only my friend could ride this bike he knew inside and out, infact it was in that rundown shape, the tyres were completely bold and the engine mounts were almost history im surprised he could ride it most of the time...
coming up to the airport and there is quite a sharp right round a roundabout, this chav tried to perform some stupid supermoto move and the bike pretty much high sided @ about 50mph and threw him into the road and he slid into a ditch. he was only weariing a lid unfastened and tank top and trackies
he was a state, as soon as he hit the floor his crap Gmac unfastened lid came off instantly... and his hands went to the bone on his palms and fingers including the usual shoulders - tarmac meeting and trackies becoming one with legs as they melt to the skin... never heard any one scream like that before so we called the abulance and the fuzz who arrived 5 mins later, in the meantime me and the pain ridden chav had stern words.. my friend still wanted to go town on him.. which was obviously out of the question..
turns out my friends written off dejing 125 ended up sevearly scaring and damaging one of the towns biggest bike and scooter T leafs... he used to steal to order too little Ba****d heres to you ...:smt097

ive hurt my hands a few times from mountain biking, and that hurts a alot, but i allways wear my gloves. but when you do crash it is a natural thing to put your hands down, but you really shouldnt. you can run the risk of really damaging your wrists. in all my offs on the motorbikes ive never put my hands down. from mountainbiking i have learnt to crash properly. ive never hit my head (well i did once because of the kerb) anyway back onto the subjet, i remember this winter, going to work, i had my winter gloves on, and my hands were still freezing. and some guy pulled up next to me on a old gsxr, with bare hands!. dont know how he was doing it but still had good clutch control and all.

sounds like he got what he deserved!

my mate was on his own bike it werent really his fault, tho he was speeding, he just slid bike went over a flyover and destroyed its self.

i've always thought that rik, hands are the first thing that goes out when you fall or fall from something, natural reaction.

i always bashed my knees up! moutain bikes and MX bikes...hands always came away ok!

I have to admit that I have been know to ride the 40 miles into work and back gloveless, if it is a very warm day its just nicer.

I now know what a complete **** I am for having done so. I recently had a big smash and was unconscious before I hit the deck. My gear saved my head and extremities from severe injury, thank gawd its a crappy summer as I had my gloves firmly on.

I've ridden without a protective jacket, trousers, boots... never gloves though. Too risky for something so valuable. At least the rest of you has a bit more meat to grind away before it gets serious. Their hands, their choice...

Thats my hand after coming off a mini moto at around 15-20mph with no gloves, the palm side was worse with grit and allsorts in it, took ages to heal and has left lovely scars. Bike = full gear always from that moment on!!

Since passing my test in November, I have been wearing winter cycling gloves (full-fingered) as they are not too thick and have allowed me to get used to the main and ancillary controls of the bike so that my confidence can grow.

It is strange that just this morning on my way in was thinking to myself that I would go to J&S lunchtime and buy a proper pair.

I used them all through the winter and apart from getting wet once or twice it never really bothered me too much, but I do realise that in an accident they would probably disintigrate.

I quite often see bikers with no gloves on at all and it does make me wince.

The only time that my current gloves let me down was in that freak storm where there were hail stones the size of golf-balls and they were caining my knuckles...........

i see a lot of riders in london esp couriers riding without gloves and it doesnt bother me at all. it doesnt cause accidents, a bit like small number plates dont. obviously the injuries will be worse if they are involved in an accident but hey ho, i'm sure most are big and ugly enough to make that decision for themselves. i would rather people get upset about the cause of accidents rather than the consequenses.

No gloves --no boots --no protective gear= NO SENSE
I just think that anybody who has had an off,no matter how slow or slight would learn this, but nowt stranger than folk

Personally I won't ride without all the kit. I've been off a few times not very serious but it hurt all the same. I agree with Sean, the people that ride gloveless know the risks, it's their choice.

if you hit the ground at any lind of speed your hands are fubar, would never not wear gloves, good pair of gloves along with decent boots a good helmet are the most important bits of safety gear you have, its the extremities, hand head feet that get the most stick............

you know what they say....

" No brain, no Pain "

Perhaps you are all missing a very important point here? Just maybe those riders who choose not to wear gloves have decidied that in the unfortunate circumstances that a fall is inevitable, they will fold their arms across their chest a la Sete Gibernau? Thus preventing them using their hands as a break fall?
