I decided to go North today to runaway from the rain - discovered the A413 - what a cracking road. I've ridden it to Ayelsbury before, but boy it just gets better and better as you head further up. I carried on to Northampton for a bite to eat and then back via the A508 which wasnt bad - best bit was it came back on the A413 again... Map (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&msa=0&ll=51.917168,-0.708618&spn=0.747084,1.851196&z=9&om=1&msid=104847206302786006390.000438129ece0274abd41)

You guys got anymore secret roads around here?

The best bit of the 413 is above Aylesbury, but not as fast.

YOnce you hit the A43, you can head West, and follow the dual carriageway through a host of quick roundabouts to Brackley, pick up the 422 down to Buckingham and get back on the 413 from there.

Just South of Aylesbury you can try the B4010 at Stoke Mandeville, down through Princes Risborough and down to the A40 at High Wycombe (part of the AR a few years ago).

The other area to check out are the back roads through Ascot, Sunningdale and South Windsor. Not a large area but good for a quick B road scratch to get your bike fix on a Sunday morning....

One of my favourite roads and on the way to the garage for me as well. Always mob. speed camera vans in the area though!

If you want a ride to really make you poo your pants - or crash horribly, try starting at Princes Risborough, head south east towards parslows hillock, then take pink road to great hampden. Past the village, take a left towards Butlers Cross. Take a brief fag / cleaning poo from seat break outside Chequers (the prime ministers country house) and see if you can spot Gordon Brown. Then head towards Wendover, returning to normality

Loads of blind sharp corners with high hedge rows, herds of cattle in the road (nearly hit them twice now!), glazed tarmac that grips like KY jelly, and generally terrifying road surfaces - ACE!

Newbury to Wantage B4494
Wantage to Ashbury B4507
Ashbury to Lambourn B4000
Lamborn to Childrey B4001
Childrey to Wantage B4507
Wantage to Newbury B4494

Can you tell I like technical B roads more than fast A roads :?:

The B4494 Newbury to Wantage. If you have never done, DO IT. It's very fast in places, very technical in others. And the road surface is always changing. Gravel, wet, slippy. Blind bends, hidden dips, over crest rises. It is also quite well known as a dangerous road and several bikers have never come home after riding it. But so long as you treat it with respect and expect a tractor to be round the next bend, you should be OK.

Riding it both ways is like riding two completly different roads.

I'll have to take some of you guys on the route I take to and from work. B roads all the way baby. :thumleft:

This might be taking the map thing too far, but if anyone wants to send me links to TV ride routes on a google map (in the same way that Gmonsta did) then I will do my best to plot them on our TV map (see the map now for Gmonsta's example). That way new members in the area can find some decent ride routes to test out when they are bored on a Sunday afternoon!

That is a good idea.

If we submitted a route that we have previously done with a bit of a write up about the route. Explaining difficult corners or possible dangerous junctions to watch out of.

Maybe a Sticky with separate links to each route map with the author and his description of the route:?: Is that possible:?:

KnightRider

Sounds like a winning plan to me. Newbies like me would definately appreciate a list of decent rides with some comments on things to look out for!

KnightRider

Not sure if this is what you were thinking BigApe but this is how I would do it:

- Get everyone to create a new thread for each route and ask them to include a google map for each - this will allow anyone who rides it to give their impressions and comments eg. this is a great pub on the route, lookout for the new speed camera etc etc.

- Create a locked sticky linking to each route thread for easy access.

- I will update the TV map with routes so that everyone can see the routes all on a single map. I can also add a direct link to the original threads for each route to the comments section of each route line.

Let me know what you think,

Jon

PS - have amended the map in line with the above to show you what I mean.

All sounds very good. HOWEVER, can we also get a group announcement at the top of the section with instructions on how to do it so everyone uses the same format etc and notation. I don't know how to create custom maps. If you do kniterider, maybe you could write a bit of blurb for Bigape to sticky to help us plebs who aren't googlemap literate!

guess we can talk about this tonight.

Yup good but as explained in different thread, separate maps.

Seperate map now added, see signature. To be honest I am not sure how Gmonsta created his googe map.

Gmonsta - any chance you could write us some brief instructions on how you created that route map?

Demonz
22-08-07, 08:32 AM
Sure... correct me if you find an easier way.

Click on here (https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=local&hl=en&nui=1&continue=http://maps.google.co.uk/maps%3Fie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26hl%3Den%26q%3D%26mid%3D1187770143)to sign up or log in to Google Maps

From the log in screen there are tabs on the left.

Click on My Maps
Click on Create New
Change the Title & Description to as needed
On the Map zoom into the starting pointYou have 4 icons at the top of the map used for editing:

The hand is for moving the map.
The placemark (upside down teardrop) is for adding points on the map.
The zigzag line is for adding lines on the map to outline routes.
The area icon is used for marking an entire area. Some editing tips:

I find its easier to move the map about by using the NSWE arrows at the top left (above the zoom).
When adding lines you can still zoom and move the map using the NSWE arrows and Zoom without finishing a line - this allows you to move the map about to choose the correct path to follow.
Once added, the paths, placemark and areas can be edited - just click on it and click edit. You can change colours, icons, add names and descriptions etc.
Its tricky but if you choose the wrong path with the line you can click on it and then move the line by dragging it at the point you wish. If you right click you can add/subtract points on the line.So now you are done:

Click Save to save your map.
On the top right there is the text - Link to page - click on this to get the URL for your map. You can then copy and paste this link into the forum for others to see your creation.

Perfect, I'll add that to the sticky post.

Stig

Also, now that we have the instructions on how to create these maps. I was thinking that we have one sticky thread with a new link to each of the created maps. So each route is created on a separate map. Is this possible :?: Or are we limited to the amount of maps we can create :?:

It would then take the format of something like this:

Route 1, xx miles A roads and B roads submitted by Gmonsta here

I would then use the "here" to link it to a thread by Gmonsta which contained a description of the route and a link to the map. Other people once they have tried the route could add comments to that particular thread.

Sound OK :?: This is assuming we have no restrictions to the map thing.

No restictions on the number of maps as far as I can tell.

Guess this would mean we dont need the overall map showing all the routes together. That makes my life much simpler.

A413 from Aylesbury to Buckingham
A421/A4221 to Bicester

Then either A418/A329/A4074 to Fox's Diner, or B4012 to the England's Rose at Postcombe.

This sounds like an awesome idea, would be good to build up a whole list of roads with reviews in our area. :thumleft:

I would recommend the A339 from Basingstoke - Alton great stretch of road with a good surface and isn't too busy with cars if you pick the right time. Not sure where to go when you are in Alton as I headed back into Basingstoke with my pillion but I should be down that way on Wednesday so might update it.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=A30%2FRingway+S&daddr=51.144916,-0.995636&geocode=FfIfDgMdannv_w%3B&hl=en&mra=mi&mrsp=1,0&sz=13&rtol=0&sll=51.160399,-1.004047&sspn=0.076221,0.154495&ie=UTF8&ll=51.199139,-1.015205&spn=0.152313,0.30899&z=12

The A339 also runs from Newbury - Basingstoke but this isn't great as it is always busy being the main road, the surface can be dodgy and there are cameras on that section also.

Found a cracker of a road with my mate on Wednesday! The A272 (see link at the bottom of the post). We only ran it from the large junction you can see in the middle of the roads to Petersfield but what a road it is! Has a combination of sweeping bends and tight technical sections, one of my faviourite bits was a nice section through pretty thick woods with constant turn after turn. Was sort of ruined by being stuck behind a lorry for abit but that shows how twisty it is...we didn't have a chance to overtake.

The surface is good the whole road and some corners have shell grip so you can really crank it in. Even though it's abit of a ride too it, it is worth it and the ride down if your coming from the north isn't bad if you take the A339 then the A32 which is a very fast road.

Only thing I would say to watch out for is the police! We saw 2 different traffic coppers on the ride both with blue 'n' twos on about 30 seconds after a bike hooning the opposite way so we sort of guessed that the bikers were showing the police some skills once again. ;)

Did Newbury-Wantage-Hungerford-Newbury today BigApe, love those roads saw you posted about the Wantage road before so will have to go for a ride sometime along it. My mate Jamie who lives in Beenham along the A4 has a old run around atm while he's waiting for his insurance money for his Fz6 that was written off will come out even though he will be left behind. :thumright:

Yes the A272 is indeed a very good road. Unfortunately very well known to both bikers and police. Quite a few deaths have occured and the police are normally there is some form or another.

The Wantage-Newbury Road. Excellent road and to ride it fast takes balls. Another road well known to bikers and a few deaths have occured. With that road I would always say it is well worth taking a slow time run before going balls out. The condition of the road changes by the day. A corner which was clean and dry the day before can be gravel strewn the next. On top of that it will give you a chance to check what all the farmers are doing. I have many times come out of a corner cranked and throttle on to find a tractor right in my path. My favourite local road is that one. :)
