Steep learning curve this biking lark!
Tried to start the bike this afternoon and try is it might, it wasn't having any of it, my guess was out of fuel but the light wasnt on. I figured as my yard slopes and the bike was facing up hill there must have been enough to cover the sensor but not to start.
So i edged it back and forth to turn it and get it level and it started, woohoo :-) and off i went to the petrol station but when I filled up it only took £5 to fill, and when I filled it when I got it last week it took £10.
Came back read a bit and have learned two new things about my bike:
1. I really should sit on the bike when filling it with fuel as leaving it on the side stand doesnt do the job.
2. its seems I cant go below £5 in the tank and expect the bike to start in my back yard!
Oh well its all good fun
Hello:smt039
What difference does fuelling the bike while sitting on it make?

well from what i read elsewhere on here if you brim it on the side stand its not full cos the tank is at an angle, so when I though the tank was full it want.
Going to try keeping the bike upright next time and see how much difference it makes.

if you fill the bike whilst sitting on it then close the filler cap and rest it back on the side stand when you go to pay wont it all leak out of the overflow pipe?

fair point!
SV Owners, how much does it cost you to fill your tank?

Think I got £13 in today. It was fairly low before though.

same here then, I put £10.50 on the way back from the dealers, so that means the tank must have been half full when it wouldnt start.

Use tesco pay at pump, don't need to get off that way.
I think the best way is to put it on the side stand and then fill it right up so fuel is showing over the recessed bit in the fuel filler. Some bike like hornets dont have these and you can just fill it right to the top.

Around £12 at 96p /L
So that would be about 12 L
Or to put it another way about 140 miles.

Hasn't happened to me yet...

No! The fuel filler flap seals it, if it does not then you need a new one. Always fill sitting on it, unless I have a tank bag. Then I use me center stand
My SV used to take about 14 liters with the fuel light on.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I am a newbie who doesn't want to run outta fuel (see the cunning link) and was wondering what sort of distance you can travel with the fuel light flashing and with the fuel light on continuously? I have a K7 sport and do roughly 180 miles between fill ups (always try to get fuel when the light flashes).
Some petrol stations won't switch the pump on unless you get off the bike as they think you'll ride off w/out paying.

You are doing pretty well to get 180 between fill ups! I used to get 20 miles on the flashing light before total panic set in, which is 170 total (curvey SV). Never ran out of fuel and I normally filled up around 160 miles.

Just filled mine up today within 5 miles of light starting to flash, 156 miles 12 litres. Engine still bedding in but getting better (480 done so far).

Just ignore the flashing light & ride on 'til you get the solid light before looking for fuel. Feel free to call me if you get caught out 0800 085 2721

i have this problem with my scoot, see i ground out my centerstand too much and had to remove it and fit a side stand now i can never fill up properly!!!
bugger!

You also don't get the points doing it that way. Hey ever little bit helps.

Last fill up the flashing light went on at 155 miles, solid light on at 186 miles, and stopped to fill up the tank reading 206 miles. That was riding very very carefully for the last 50 miles. Still only managed to fit in 15.2 litres though to the brim!
It's my goal to fill up and actually get 17 litres in (K5). Although that would involve me running out of petrol...
Out of interest, has anyone filled the tank from completely empty? do you get the full 17 litres in? Or are Suzuki lying to us?
How do you run out of fuel on a SV?
It's not like the old days when all we had was the fuel tap and if you forgot to re-set it from reserve you'd run out like a moron. I once pushed a GS550 for about 5 miles on a hot summers day. :pale:
I filled up it only took £5 to fill, and when I filled it when I got it last week it took £10.

That sounds a little fishy to me. The bike should still start with about 1/2 a tank of gas!
How much of a slope is your drive? Could be the cause i guess, but sounds a bit weird none the less

From when the light starts winking at me, a shade less than £12
Given its about a quid a litre, at that point I have about 5 litres left in the tank at that point.
And so we dont get that good ol question of "how many miles to a tank" again :D i can do between 120 - 150 miles before the light comes on

commuting or thrashing - makes a huge difference to fuel consumption for my curvy. i usually squeeze about 14.50 quid in or a little over at 95.9p / L. that will get me about 170 miles, or 190+ with careful (read slow) riding.
It should start fine, with even a small amount of fuel in? I have started mine with the constant fuel light on, so it must have been raelly low.
