View Full Version : Peg Scraping! Need more clearance!

Going through a left hander the other day my footpeg was scratching the road. As cool as it feels to have pegs down, I know that it can end in tears if they dig in!
Does anyone else have this problem with standard footrests? Should I invest in a lovley set of rears sets? If so which ones?

Since replacing my crappy Dunlop 208's for some Michelin Pilot Sport's I just cant get enough of going round corners. The 208's were complete sh1te!

Leaning much further than that on the road may mean you start running out of grip, so perhaps be a little wary. However, several companies do rearsets for the SV, or jackup plates if you can get them are a cheap option.

Lean off the bike more, then the pegs won't grind out, it's free too :)

If your pegs are touching on the right hand side and you have a standard exhaust it will be about 1cm from hitting ground. Also with pegs down you arnt far at all from having your brake and gear levers down, I have seen two Sv's bend there brake levels.

On another note, I got my knee down last night for he first time

As Tim says, lean off more, that way you can corner quicker without the bike leaning as much. As cool as it feels having the pegs scraping, wouldn't you rather get your knee down properly?

Chafted yer pegs?

Nice work!

Your pegs will not dig in. They are sprung. Be more worried about your foot catching and getting ripped off the peg. Hurts even if you don't crash.

Jack up your preload front and rear, will give you more clearance.

Eat less. ;)

Again hanging off like a monkey is easiest.

Did you go back and check the length of the scrape or where you to busy whooping like a madman?:p

Although it will alter your sag and thus make the bike handle differently everywhere else.

So where is this left-hander you speak of?

I know of only one but that is in maidstone and the junction is on a downhill slope very off-camber...plenty of evidence of peg-scraping there as well though;)

Maybe try being a litle more frugal with the pie intake. That should help ground clearance a little.:p

The corner I speak of is at Stockbury roundabout. Its the London bound M2 slip road. Straight off the roundabout is a 2 lane left hander. This is as dodgy as **** as the left lane is covered in oil and the right lane is covered in stones, cr@p and previous car crash left overs.
However, the second left hand bend is the sweet one. There is no oil or dirt on this part (no sure why as all of Britains road are caked in oil, diesel and sh1te!).
The reason for no knee down action was because I couldnt stick my leg out as far as is needed. I had all my textile gear on which restricts movement. If I had my Alpinestar suit on, I would've been scratching the knee!

As for "less pie/loose weight" remarks, I am just over 12stone. Surely the SV's suspension can cope with that sort of weight.

As for the remark regarding the 208's, I must have had a dodgy set. I really hated them... almost as much as the standard black cr@p that Suzuki put on the bike!

I assume that we are talking about an SV here? The sv pegs are actually quite high compared to many other bikes in the class, try a fazer, Z750 etc. Also a factor in ground clearance is how much you weigh. You can also take the blobs off (i think there bolts on ones) to add ground cleanance although this does mean that the peg grips the ground a little more, I did this to my z750 and it worked well on the track. It means that your footpegs get mullered as though.

Like others have said you dont really want to be leaning much more on the road, hang off a bit. It also might be worth checking that your preloads are set with the right static sag.
