View Full Version : would you Buy Ducati coz of MotoGP?

Just wondering.
Because of the efforts of Casey Stoner in MotoGP, has this changed your view on Ducati?
Are you more positive than before to the Italian brand?
Would you now buy a Ducati?
The success on the track is there to sell more bikes. If the view is still negative then they are sure wasting their time!

I would buy a Ducati not simply because of the MotoGP success.. but it does make the brand more attractive in my opinion. I'm sure sales will go up because of MotoGP as people want to be associated with success..

I know lots of very happy Ducati owners, and a few grumpy ones. The grumpy ones have it for me. Until I could be as happy with the reliability of them as with a ricer I'll give them a miss. The 1098 does look nice though, oh and that new super moto thing.....

The Moto GP effort merely adds a little more kudos to Ducati ownership in my mind, as it banishes the pointed fingers and smirks from say Honda owners! When was the last time you saw a mechanical breakdown by a Ducati in Moto GP or WSB? If I remember correctly it was Sete Gibernau at Jerez?
Ducati's are superb to ride and own and I really do not see reliability as any kind of issue today. Yes I had a problem with my 749 after 3 years but I hasten to add that this was caused by human error during a previous service.
Having said the above, I am a little concerned regarding some of the warranty issues that have come to light with the 1098 model. Just backs up my belief that when a radical model change takes place, best to hold off for the first 6 to 12 months before buying as any problems will normally arise in that time.
I am convinced that if Ducati produced a toned down 800cc V4 road bike, it would sell like crazy.
I would love another Ducati and will probably buy one, but a workhorse machine is to be bought first...watch this space............
If I could afford to get a decent one and run it, then yes, I'd have one straight away. But not because of MotoGP. If anything, Foggy would be responsible for me ever owning one.

Really did consider buying a Monster before the SV. I know, as Dirk says, Slayer has had mega problems with his but I sat on one at one of the bike shows and it fit like a glove.
Ever since seeing one, I think it was in the film the Crow II, I have loved the image but read all the usual stuff about reliability/electrics so it put me off.
Maybe one day when the pennies aren't so tight.
******** to MotoGP. I'd have one just because they're class.

Yeah, but it's been fine for 2 whole weeks now (apart from the complete loss of clutch pressure (easy fix) on the M25 last Saturday, and the discovery of severed tail light wires on Friday due to some numpty's bodged repair attempt) :smt073
They can be a bit pricey, but when they work they are awesome bikes, total grin factor!! I wouldn't shy away from one just because of the reliability issues, you just need to be very careful about service history etc when you buy second hand. Mine at the end of the day is 13 years old so to expect a bike of that age to have nothing wrong with it is nuts, be it Japanese or Italian.
EDIT -> Oh, and the look on the faces of the Soho Massive when it turns up working every week (ish) is priceless :D

Me me me me me..
Although I think they are doing a 200bhp V4 road going (well, race really) Ducati. About £40,000 or something to you sir
The success in MotoGP wouldn't sway me, but the simple fact they are there may tempt me.
Same with sponsers, i'd rather buy something from someone who sponsers any form of motorsport over one that doesn't. Purley becuase they are chipping in whatever event and aiding its funding.
Regarding the 1098, goes with any new bike OR car. Always leave the first year models, let them iron out the bugs. Although when sitting on that 1098 at the WSB, it was tiny, it was awesome, perfect position for me (5ft 8), can only imagine how it goes....
Dads working at an Italian bike shop, wonder if i can get myself a test ride
I'd have one, or at least consider it, but then I'd also look at the Aprilia RSV Factory R beast, and I've no racing related reason to do that- except GP125 and 250, but they're hardly relevant :)

Liz's has run fine, once we had the mess sorted out that the last owner had left it in. Which when we looked at the prices of parts etc wasnt anymore expensive than my GSXR is.
I think the trouble is with alot of Duke's is that they dont get ridden and they just get left to sit and only come out to play on warm days. Its not good for any bike to sit unused.
All the stuff that was wrong with Liz's was bits and pieces seized up and stuck on where the bike had been sat and hardly ridden.
I've had heard scary tales of dodgy eletrics on the older monsters though, but I think the more modern Dukes they have sorted that out.
I agree with the spanish one, dont buy the first generation of a new model as they always have teething troubles.

Yeah but does what Stoner do make you bigger fan of Ducati or no?
It make me bigger fan.
I am impressed that such a relatively small company can beat the best of the Japanese.
I wouldn't buy a Ducati, but I can imagine the fans having some smugness when Stoney does the biz.

All that MotoGP has shown me that ducati know how to make a fast bike. I wouldnt buy a ducati on the back of its motogp success though. Maybe on the back of its WSBK success, yes
But it still comes down to how I find the bike when I ride it. I don't care if this bike or that bike has X amount of technomological doowits on it...if it aint comfy, dosnt perform how I like it and blows up every two minutes, I dont want to know!

Ducati have a 40 year history of making good race bikes, and their current form in motogp is part of that. Also,in the 916 family they probably made the best looking bike ever,so they certainly are a desirable brand, but would I buy one?Maybe, but not as a main bike.I still believe there are reliability, build quality and customer service issues with them,so I would be a bit reluctant.
I did have one many years ago---a Desmo 250 in bright yellow, and it crap*ed all over the competition then, but the competition is stronger now.:D

Monster's are not altogether my cup of tea, however if city commuting and posing were my thing,I would definitely look at one.;)
Not a lot wrong with a Gixxer,(in fact they are superb) but you must remember as good as they are...they are just another Gixxer. If I had to explain the difference it would not mean anything to you. Ducati purchase means you buy in to a whole lot more than the particular model that catches your eye.
I am not buying a Ducati next as I am looking for something a little different from my 749.(My overall plan though is to see who does bring out an all singing and dancing race rep V4) I am to temporarily fall back in to the ranks of just another motorcycle owner.LOL.
Monsters are great looking. Certainly one of the best classicish naked bikes.

Its not all just Stoner, what about Capirex and Baylis in the last round of last year. Ducati have won races in MotoGp before, its this year Casey has taken his riding to another higher level IMHO.
I think all its done because Moto GP is more popular now and the dominance they had in WSB has gone, is open up Ducati as a brand to another audience. Its a bit like people who go to Moto GP and only know who Rossi is, kind of..

And the 851...
And the 888.
Also dominated World Superbikes back in the day when 750's were the sports bikes. (400cc replaced by 600cc, 750cc replaced by 1000cc).
They were also stunning bikes for the time.

Many years ago when I was in a less fortunate financial position than I'm in now, I had a test ride on a Desmo 500. It was superb, but I couldn't afford one, although it left a lasting impression to the extent that I am worried about test riding a Duke now as I might just buy one
They really have got smaller over the years though, and I'm not sure that I would comfortably fit on one (OK, I have got a bit bigger as well ).
Too many bikes and not enough time to enjoy them... ;-)

The only ducati i would buy because of stoner is this one :
http://www.ducati.com/od/ducatinorthamerica/en/news/img/media12481_0.jpg
unfortunatly it will never ever happen as they are very limited and cost the same as a house... :D
here is what ducati say :
The Desmosedici RR will be available with a special race kit that includes a 102dB racing exhaust, a dedicated CPU, bike cover and paddock stand. A new dedicated service plan is also included to give each Ducati Desmosedici RR owner the benefit of a three-year warranty and three years of scheduled maintenance free of charge.
Two versions of the RR will be available. The ‘Desmosedici RR’ finished in ‘Rosso GP’ with a white number plate on the tail-section and the ‘Desmosedici RR Team Version’ finished in ‘Rosso GP’ with a broad white stripe on the fairing as with the Factory race bikes. A team sponsor decal kit will be provided with each bike.
And to finish :
Reservations for the Desmosedici RR have been accepted via the official Ducati dealer network since 2 June 2006 and will continue to be taken until 31 December 2007. Production will begin in October 2007 and first deliveries will be made to 999R owners who placed their Desmosedici RR order before 30 September 2006. Production of all remaining orders will be completed by December 2008.

I know alot of people say that reliability issues should be ignored but I use my bike as a permanent mode of transport not a toy so reliability is important for me, if I could afford a ducati asa toy though, then yes I would by one simply because they are sex on whee;s nothing to do with gp.

Would you buy a Supercar as an every day car?????
Or would you buy a cheaper tried and tested machine, like an Audi or something?
Same way, would you buy an SV for every day, or would you prefer a 1098? I'd go for the SV for every day use. Like a supercar, top end sports bikes come out only every so often.

It would be a better investment for Ducati to go around and buy up all the 13 year old Ducati's ....
And scrap them.
Than what they have invested in Moto GP. Then their reputation might improve quicker.

I don't ride in the wet or do high mileage so reliability doesn't worry me.
As per many other people I don't give a hoot about MotoGP success when buying a road bike. I don't link MotoGP to road going bikes any more than I link Renault winning F1 titles to my Clio.
WSB and BSB does have a bearing. It probably wouldn't alter my choice of a bike because that comes down to price, reviews and location of dealers but it does add to the brand/bikes kudos to actually see it (or something that looks like it) racing and doing well.

Skodas have always been laughed at, but they do the job at a cheap budget.
And skoda has been owned by VW for a number of years.. Not that they needed VW's help to win all those rally championships.

I wouldn't, it's the rider not the bike. The best bike out there won't help you if you're a poor rider.
Incidentally, has anyone else noticed that the Ducati 1098 stickers on the bike reas as "LOSS" and "LOSE" depending on the angle they're viewed from? Could explain the poor sales. That and the fact that they've now got clearance for the 1200 version that makes the original 1098s old hat...

I wouldn't buy a Ducati, or any bike, because of Moto GP. But I'd consider buying a Ducati because of Streetfighters, there's a brilliant 900SS fighter in the mag this month...
Ducatis are great and all, but the GP bikes are prototype racers not anything to do with the road bikes. WSB and BSB are a bit more relevant but I still can't see any connection with what works on track and what makes sense on the road.
