They change the ECU for one that only allows the bike to put out 33bhp.
Have a search its been covered alot and there should be plenty of threads on the subject.

yip, to change the power you plug in a different control unit (little black box) under the seat

is there enough room under the seat to fit 2 control units so if plod says anything you can swap them back over?

I don't think so, but there should be ample space to store one in the rear seat, (just make sure you pack it in withsomething so it doesn't float to the bottom of the front seat as its a nightmare to fish something out.) The local plod more than likely don't know the difference between restricted and not, as they both go to silly speeds. there is no marks on either to say if it is full power or 33bhp, so the only way that I am aware of that they can check is through supplying a rectification notice where you have to get it tested within 7 days, (by which time you will have been home and changed it to 33bhp)
Disclaimer - I have not, do not and do not condone doing any of the above as it is just as illegal as not having a license and riding, when riding a bike above your restriction

tbh for a first time rider on a big bike (especially some one my age) 33bhp is enough although it does get a little borring when you've been riding for a while but i have vowed not to remove mine for road use untill my restriction is up:salut:
If you were to damage your bike in some way, there is the small possibility your insurance company will learn of this and not pay out.
