View Full Version : Is my bum too big?
I've noticed over the past few days, that my bike feels different. Kinda feels really 'bouncy' . At first I thought the tyre pressure was low. I've checked and re checked and both are fine.
The steering doesn't feel any different, but the bike seems to dive down a hell of a lot more when I'm braking and when I sit on it it feels like it lowers down a lot more than I recall.
Maybe I've gained weight and my bum's too weighty:confused:
How many miles on your curvy Melody?
It could be your rear shock is a bit past it's best.

Mines stopped being bouncy and is now officially knackered. Have a replacement 7k one to fit and must do it in the next couple of weeks as the MOT is due soon

My (admittedly this was on a pointy) rear shock started getting really bouncy at about 20K, when I was 2 up or laden with luggage. At 27K it was bouncing so much as to be dangerous when I was riding it, if I was cornering moderately quickly. Since replacing with a new shock (bottom of the range Nitron Racing one) this problem has been eliminated.

Of course, you guys wanting a picture of Melody's rear ARE talking about the rear of the bike, aren't you?:D

True enough lissa :D getting back to the issue though ehemm sounds like it could be your shock possibly past its sell by mel, unlikely to be caused by your rear however big it may be ;)

hot weather - higher tyre pressues, thinner oil in forks/shocks, riding faster on nice dry roads
or maybe the problem is all pie-related ;-)

Err, definately not!!
Melody asked the question "is my bum too big" and in order to make a fair assesment we need a pic of the bum, the rear of a bike...well i can walk out and look at my own for that.
And if Melody wants an accurate assesment i think it needs to be a full body shot and ideal of her in a bikini so i can assess her proportinality more accurately and see if her BMI is in proportion.
OR
I'm just a red blooded male who cant get enough pics of girls bums on their bikes...spesh if they got nice tats too ;)

Sounds like a knackerd shock, but could it be that its getting a bit hot in the warm weather we seem to be enjoying? thinning out the oil? My forks go squishy when its warm

Just under 15000 miles. I've had it for the past 3000 miles or so.
Mines stopped being bouncy and is now officially knackered. Have a replacement 7k one to fit and must do it in the next couple of weeks as the MOT is due soon
Would a knackered rear shock cause an MoT failure? Bike was MoT'd few days ago and it passed?
:p

In my experience no it wouldn't fail unless it was really really bad for example my SV had it's original shock in at about 45000 miles and was completely knackered it still passed it's mot and on the last SV i mot'd the shock had done just under 30000 miles and was well passed it's best and that passed as well

If we are talking about it squatting more when stationary, then that has to be pie-related I am afraid as that is only the spring doing its job not the damping!
But as has been described, if it misbehaving in motion it could be anything from just weather changes to a knackered shock!!!
To test if your shock is rogered, get someone to hold the bike vertical by standing at the front and holding the bars. Then put your palms on the riders seat and push down hard (using some body weight here really helps), after letting go (of the pressure on the seat, not the bars :D), the rear end should return reasonably smartly, but ‘smoothly’, if it returns really quickly and enough for it to bounce UP - then a little back down before it settles again - then the shock is fecked!!
i.e. If the shock is sound, then the rear should return to neutral, without going too far past neutral on the way back up … certainly if it yo-yo’s before coming to rest its really bad ;)
Does that make any sense? :|

Usually only when it's really really knackered. Bear in mind they generally "go off" and deteriorate over time, rather than behaving perfectly one day and not at all the next. A mate of mine failed his MOT solely for the state of his rear shocks (his were really bad, mind), but that was 60K miles on the original shocks on a 30 year old bike.

maybe you could try and describe more what you are feeling on the bike mel that doesnt feel right!
The bike didn't seem to be as bouncy riding home this morning??? I don't know if its because I'm now used to the 'bounce' or if its actually not bouncing now?
Blue SV650, I've carried out your test as best I could and the rear end returned to position pretty smoothly.
If it's a knackered shock, it would continue bouncing till it was changed right?? It wouldn't just suddenly be ok would it?
Its probably pie related.

It was quite cold out riding at six this morning,so I think your problem may be damping oil losing it's viscosity as it gets hotter.Easily sorted for the front, but the rear shock can't be adjusted for this.Either live with it or spend dosh on a better shock.:(

I'd say the shock was probably ok then ... I also doubt it is pies ... coz that is a gradual thing too ;)
If it is shot it will continue to be shot, yes, it is not like it will be better one day and worst the next. Its probably just one of those things and you were being over sensitive?? However, if it goes soft one day again, then do the bounce test again.
Also have a look at the rear shock, there will be a spring and inside that spring near the bottom, there is a shiny rod (might be best to see it if you are on your knees looking up). if that looks like it has fresh oil residue on it then it is on its way out (the oil seal is leaking), it should be dry (unless you have got overly frisky with chain lube and hit the shock!! ;)).
Just keep a tab on it, at the end of the day it is not like it will suddenly fail, it'll just get gradually worse, then one day you will do the bounce test and it'll pogo and you know it is time ;)
Melody, follow Blue's advice. My shock is going on for 30k, and I get a pogo affect from time to time, butI'm putting that down to ambient conditions, not the shock itself.
