The heart wants Ireland to win this, however there is no getting away from The Aussies, New Zealand, South Africa and France. England could make it to the semi's but I do not think they have a team that compares with the title winning side.

If you want to see brutal tackling try and catch the Tonga Vs. Samoa game(16th September). Not for the feint hearted I can tell you with big hits that you will feel from your sofa!

If Ireland dont improve on yesterday I see it NZ v Angentina who I think are going to suprise some people and Australia V SA
with a SA V NZ fina; with the Boks coming out on top, NZ have bottlked too many times in the last few years

As in any major tournament, impressing in the group stages is not what it is all about. No good peaking in your efforts to go through to the knock out phase. A good team will build confidance match by match.

Yes Filipe. Portugal were fantastic for a "new" country to this sport. Well done to them.;)

SA........

As long as the key boys stay fit, Burger, Matfield, Habana, Smit then I see no reason why they cant win.
Even a few injuries to those key boys will meen they wont win, there is not the super quality depth to the squad that is needed.

And I just saw this :(:

Well deary me, what a dissapointment? Tonight I went to a bar to watch a sponge attempt to beat down a wall.

England had a one off team 4 years ago let's remember that. The rebuilding process has been a complete disaster since that fantastic success 4 years ago.

England's game is all about forward domination and as they have not rebuilt properly since 2003 they were always going to struggle when the big boys came to call. A Head Coach promoting a game plan that is 10 years out of date will not see such heights reached again people.

But do not despair totally, this is only the qualification stage. Beat Samoa and you go through to the qualifyinbg stages.

However show such lack of ideas and commitment and Samoa will also tear you apart and hurt you big time with their tackling.

The best chance for a northern hemisphere side progressing with pride is IRELAND. The euphoria and home advantage will not be enough for the sweaty arm pitted French.

except for Jason Robinson who looked like the only man in a white shirt trying to do somthing different, such a pitty he had to pick up an injury though.

England never stood a chance, they are lucky the score wasnt greater. Samoa will have high hopes for their clash, I think they might even be worth a flutter! Remember a stronger SA team conceded points to, and score less points agianst Samoa, than England, just a few days ago :smt103

England had a one off team 4 years ago let's remember that.

Not quite a one-off - the team had been developing over a number of years (based around Johnny's boot !!)

The rebuilding process has been a complete disaster since that fantastic success 4 years ago.

That's the basic problem - Andy Robinson didn't do any real re-building. So Brian Ashton has had to do what he can in about a year. He hasn't been helped by injuries - but hey, that's all part of the game !!

The best chance for a northern hemisphere side progressing with pride is IRELAND. The euphoria and home advantage will not be enough for the sweaty arm pitted French.

Whilst I agree with you about the French (I think they'll be lucky to get out of the group stage). I thought the Irish made a right meal of beating Namibia - almost as bad as England's very dodgy win over the USA.

Unless there's some drastic improvements the only way I see a northern hemisphere team progressing beyond the quarter finals is if Ireland manage to win Group D & Wales finish in the runner-up spot in Group C thereby setting up an Ireland v Wales Quarter final !!

From an Englaish point of view I think once this world cup is over probably close to 2/3rds of the current squad need to be told "Thanks - but your time is over" & we should spend the next couple of years developing the Saxons players so they can step up.
This will be difficult because there will always be people screaming that we must win the 6 Nations etc etc.
I say B*LL*CKS - work on building the team & the results for the first 2 years don't matter if you end up with a potential world beating team !!

BTW - I don't believe England struggled this evening - they were comprehensively destroyed !!

K

BTW - I don't believe England struggled this evening - they were comprehensively destroyed !!

This is the really sad thig - I don't think we were comprehensively destroyed...

... the Boks weren't playing brilliantly, they were just playing 'well'. It could perhaps have been alot worse.

I did like the nice show of gentlemanly play when Robinson went to ground though. No bundle, it was obvious he was injured, so they played 'over' him.
A well deserved standing ovation from all supporters when he was escorted off the pitch - I hope he'll be back in play before England are out of it, retiring once it's over so in some ways it would be a pity for his career to finish on that note.

Whilst I really do wish Wales all the best (and I think it could be a cracking match) - my concentration is going to be on how many points my beloved All Blacks put on the board against Portugal.
Predictions have been that this will be 'nil point' for the Portugese, but England managed to get the first game in with a zero score - so it shouldn't be too embarassing for them.

For hopeful gladiatorial entertainment though I can't wait for Tonga vs Samoa tomorrow.

That's the basic problem - Andy Robinson didn't do any real re-building....

I think the other basic problem here is they dont have any solid development championship competition similar to what the Sothern Hemisphere do. The gaps growing because the standard and expectations have grown higher in the south. Sure there is the Guiness Premiership and a few others but nothing that remotely resembles the quality and grade as the Super 14s.

The Heineken Cup would be the one - but it needs defragmenting and slimming down a little maybe with some club/area consolidation to pull more quality players together. I could imagine it would be pretty difacult to to pull something like that off with various cultures and nationalities involved - but the benefits would be massive to have a solid European Championship as the primary league for European players...

Nice to see Robinson playing well - but the Saffas are looking slim fast and furious at the moment. Very strong contenders.

Wales did okay in the end, and Portuguese did well, too.

Okay, so the All Blacks had six front-row forwards on the pitch at the end, but it was good to watch and they didn't give up.

Both were great games to watch - mainly because both Wales and Portugal always played like they were 'in with a chance' regardless of what the scoreboard said - much respect, espescially to Portugal, (even with the little game of 'footie' that was played down one side of the pitch! ;)).

As a team England simply seem to be playing to lose - if you can call that 'playing'.

Well, it was certainly 'interesting' - nothing really like the JCBvs Juggernaut game that everyone was predicting. In fact it was very mature and thought out with an eye on the bigger world cup picture.

Personally I think it was a pity that the Samoan 'safety' game didn't pay off, but Tonga did deserve the win.

He didn't know who this guy was, and was saying at the start, he'd be sort of cantering about the place and he thought, huh, he can move for a big lad.

Then he would turn it up when he ran onto the ball, and it was like someone was just twisting a dial, you could see him accelerate from running fairly quickly over the course of a second to running unbelievably quickly.
And God help anything between him and the try line.
He was saying that a him, and a fair number of people around him, didn't even cheer. They all just stood there with stupid looks on them, and slack jaws thinking bloody hell.

My rugby know someone claim to fame... He went to Wesley College - boys boarding school in NZ. I went to St Stephens - another about 10km away. We used to play against each other and it was one of those big 1st 15 type games with the younger kids on the sidelines doing the haka etc. He was Number 8 back then, 2 years younger but still bigger than me. that's some claim to fame alright.
there was a kid in the class above us, west African dude adopted by Irish parent, who was strong. As in, scary. He used to mitch off class a fair bit, and the teachers would just walk over to the weights room, and gather him back. He would just lift weights all the time. He didn't move very fast on the pitch, but when he moved he moved with some determination. Watching him hit people was like bombs going off, just a wrecking ball, he would literally level people. He was only 5 10 or something, more or less the same width. Absolutely terrifying to look at, very similar looking to France's Betson. He was also black, which, when I was young was pretty unusual for Ireland, so that initially rang alarm bells in the opposition. Black guy? Hmm. I've seen black people on TV. Lets be just careful here now..... CLOBBER... Try.

The whole team had one very simple tactic, get the ball to him, every match, same tactic, just get Dom the ball. That year we won everything. Not sure what happened to him afterwards.

Every morning for a week, I was just sitting on the grass, watching the Aussies go through their paces, with their fancy Aussie accents. I was 10 or something, I had seen Campese on TV, and it was always, ah, look, Campo, small looking chap.

He didn't look small in real life.
He looked massive. He just looked small compared to the rest of them, who looked even massiver.
I have never seen anyone kick a ball as effortlessly as Lynagh since either. He kicked in slow motion. Amazing stuff watching them train. The whole set up was the definition of cool for me at the time.

The heart says England to win and retain the title, however the brain is telling me that it is going to be a NZ v SA final, and I am tipping SA to win it. NZ will choke as usual, cuz they peak far too early in the competition.

Lomo? Spanish you know. Nice on a sandwich.

Lomu? A complete freak of nature being so big yet so awesomely fast. Great to watch.

There was another in Rugby League,(though not altogether as fast and big) Mal Meninga. He used to cover the ground effortlessly and bounce tacklers off like rag dolls. Incredible to watch.

Well done the yanks another poor show by Samoa, 22 - 3 up at half time and 25 - 21 at the final whistle, another good showing by one of the minnows who really wanted to play the game.

Only 19.10 up at the half and Wilko's now missed 2 conversions and a penalty

Pity about the result. Oh well.

Entertaining game. Seemed England played rope-a-dope rugby??? Big hits but it had the Tongans flagging in the end - they just couldnt match the pace.

England played well enough to win tonight but it won't be enough to beat Australia. They'll have to lift their game a lot to pull that one out of the bag.

Entertaining game though. Some crunching tackles. Man of the match for me was Lewis Moody. He never gave up and you just can't doubt his commitment.

WE'RE THOUGH TO THE LAST 8, god thats better than I thought after the first couple of performances. We actually looked like we could play the game for mot of the time tonight, the Tongans were good and looked dangerous but the backs snuffed out most of the problems and both the Tongan tries were scored because of the conditions on a dry pitch we would have kept them out.
