View Full Version : Had a go on a Crosser... and fell off
A mate asked me along to go have a play with his new toys on the weekend. In the last couple of months he bought a Quad bike and then out of the blue a 250 2-stroke crosser. So we stuck the stuff on the trailer and took it to a localish place where plod turns a blind eye. The place was manic and we didn't much like the look of the crowd. We rather stuck out. So we packed up and left. Instead we went and played in a little paddock (with permission).
Anyway I'm rambling. I've not ridden a crosser in years and never a 2 stroke. It was interesting though not as much fun as I hoped. I was very aware that I didn't have the right kit on and that I don't really have any experiance. The 2-stroke thing was also interesting, nothing... not a lot... LOTS. There was a bit of short grass (track in\out of paddock) and towards the end having got a bit of confidence (and probably a bit cocky) I gave it a bit too much coming off this (and turning) and low sided. Doh. Nice grass stain on my jeans and later a headache which I still have.
I also had a go on the quad. That was interesting and porbably more fun, though also scary. Thumb throttles, what are they all about? It felt incredably unstable (didn't ever actually tip) and it was a bit of a byatch to turn. Still interesting and again if I got some proper kit I'd love another go, though probably where there's a bit more space.

I had a 250 2 stroke KTM when i was 16. It went like the clappers. Four strokes seem very tame in comparison (of course they arent really). However I now really want an RS250 aprilia project for the winter...

Err a Honda. I'm not very good with model names. I think it's about a '91 model.
I don't think I'll be offering to buy it when he's finished playing. I think I would prefer a 4-stroke. More to my power delivery tastes.

I was thinking CR but didn't want to say in case I was wrong. As my sig says I'm a fan of the XR400 based on my 5 days riding one in Andorra about 6 years ago.

2 Strokes are much better off road bikes IMO they deliver power with a Sledgehammer (Especially CR500s) don't weigh anything and smell great.
I think it might depend on what type or riding you do or the style or rider you are.
I've not heard of anyone that could actually ride a CR500 properly. Though I've heard many a time that it'll lift the front wheel anywhere in any gear :-)

CR500s are just wrong but I knew a guy who used to ride them like a loony. When you kicked them over if they kicked back it was either the kickstart or your ankle that snapped. It certainly made me realise why bike boots were important.

I found the same thing on a quad I went on recently, and the same for my biker mate, we were both leaning in turns and hardly turning the handlebars, it felt like we were going to fall over. After an hour though, you kind of switch brain to a quad brain then you realise you can whack the steering round to go hard round corners and you won't fly off. Fun though, especially when fishtailing the back end round corners!

If you want fun and odd to steer, try an off road trike. They are interesting to say the least. If you want to turn, you have to lean the wrong way (towards the outside of the turn rather than the inside) so that the inside wheel loses traction. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's great fun. They'll also wheelie almost anywhere.:p:D
Sounds like I need to have another go.
I've heard about leaning the wrong way - that seems really weird. Is it only the case for 3 wheelers?
I hada go at the NEC bike show 3 years ago. Loved it. so ill be doing the same again this year. THe falling off and sliding just made it even more fun.
was on a 400 honda something. did not pay attention just went for the biggest bike.

No, you should do the same on quads too (no diff in the rear axle), but because they have 2 front wheels, they do go round corners better without it. If you just turn the bars on a trike, you keep going in a straight line.
Sometimes when I've been riding our trike hard, i'm hanging off the seat one way and leaning the other (at the same time) just to get the weight balance right to turn it without flipping it over (they will turn over quite easily - that's why they are now illegal).
