I was asked on sunday buy this R1 numpty what my riding style was on my "Girls Bike" and i really couldnt answer the guy because its not officially set yet.. he still laughed at me...
but what do you guys ride/race like, in terms of "knee down" "lean in" "hang off" does it really make a difference how you choose to ride and take corners ?? as long as you ride correctly and safely does it even matter?
i wish i raced like Chris vermulan eith my elbows down lol, :D
as for riding i prefer to ride safe.

Depends what I'm doing, where I'm going, if I've got a pillion on the back, if I know the road, is it raining or not...

To many factors to say "I ride like this" I change all the time.

I guess your right on that fizz its what i thought because you cannot allways stick to one style as conditions change all the time.. maybe he was a weekend warrior trying to pick on the little guy, what about track days and racing though?

Clearly another clued up bike rider.

Was he wearing shorts and a t-shirt too??? Racing style indeed  You ride how your comfortable.

My race track style would be different to my road style, as on track your trying to get it over round the bend as quickly as possible. On the road, you go round the bend hoping to come out the other side and not hit something (diesel, animals, dodgy 2 lane driving cars etc)....

Ask him if he's leading any race championships. He'll probably say he doesn't race, just turn round and walk off laughing.

I would have probably given one of two replies

"What the **** are you on about ?"
or
Having first checked his chicken strips
"Faster than yours, even on my girls bike" (even though it may have been a lie )

Might have been, but maybe he's only just passed his test and was after some advice...

if you go to a bike race, even the racers do things differently, different lines through corner ( Haga and Kagayama ) Elbow down ( Hopper ) Rossi if you watch him carefully changes what he's doing ( moving weight to the rear to get more traction etc ) through a race.

If I rode on a track then I'd probably ride differently but I've never done it so I dont really know.

Alternatively he was yanking your chain, personaly I tend to just ignore people like that or I'll chat to them for a few minutes and see how genuine they are. If I think they are taking the p*ss I go quiet and dont say alot back to them.

IMHO, you got it right, he's a numpty and you're obviously good enough to adapt you riding to the conditions. He won't be laughing so much when someone with more ability, but less money, than him stuffs him on his favourite bit of road on a 15yr old FZR600 or similar. It'll happen one day - either that or he'll end up in prison or in hospital!

Personally, on my VFR as a self confessed average speed man, I sit in the seat (generally with pillion) or hang off a little (solo), pushing the inside knee and shoulder forward. Knee down? - No thanks, try to scrape the toes/pegs if I'm going for it, but like to keep my knee out of the way. Knee-down's not so impressive if your pegs are still inches off the ground.

It only needs to make a difference to you. If you enjoy your riding then your "style" is OK. I'm sick of folk pretending that the road is a racetrack. Dosen't matter how good you are, safe road riding is slow compared to track riding. If R1 numpty's that good why isn't he proving it in club racing or even BSB/WSB?

Possibly, but still a numpty if he thought an R1 was a suitable first bike after passing his test? I prefer the weekend warrior theory.

Does the R1 now come wit a big purple vein down the side? This is one of the few things I hate about motorbikes, all the ones who are full of it.

And Ruffy, what the hell is that a picture of? Did you run over the thing that spawns all the Gremlins in the film?

For what it's worth, on road I ride like they're out to get me, on track I ride like my **** is on fire, knee on the deck, but my mate rides his like his **** in on fire all the time, and never moves out of the seat, and has never got his knee down, despite whipping my sorry ass.

Well I agree, it depends.

This weekend I've been experimenting with leaning in, hanging off, sitting still etc and all it affects is how upright the bike corners (or so it seems to me)

I would like to think my riding style is 'safe and considered' rather than 'knee down / hanging off / leaning in / etc. I'm sure someone else will be along to correct me shortly.

Yea sounds like a loser.... if you see his bike again DEFFO get some pics of his 2 inch chicken strips so we can all have a laugh!!! :smt097 Also ask him if his style is streight line (if he has the chicken strips i mean).

Anyway to answer your question, I move my bum (cant use the other word??) about so i feel more comfortable when im going for it, but i dont go for knee down, toes is better :D. Sometimes have brakes trailing into a corner depends on how comfortable the front feels.

I think im resonable in corners, i kept up with some ferrari the other day round a few bendies, after a few miles he pulled up and said "fast car no?"... i should have informed him i was on a budget 70BHP bike... ha ha, I actually said "its not bad" then left.

So i guess what i mean by this is that knee down and all that dont mean fast ;).

Nothing so fantastic, I'm afraid. It's an early picture of our Lhasa Apso puppy, who's been hand reared by my wife after mum rejected her. This pic is at about 4 weeks old after diving headlong into a bowl of baby porridge while being weaned onto solid foods.

We thought it looked more like an Ewok escaped from Endor!

i would of gone with EWOK lol,
as for numpty man, he was just being a n*b plainly, i saw him poking around my bike after he pulled up, didnt get a look at his chicken strips tho.. i was quite content in the knowledge that he is probably completly under the thumb, hates his job, only got the bike because his other mates (who were sound as..) has them... but will probably sell it when he has his first head shake any way after washing his Y front pants :laughat: :smt022

I sit on the seat, turn the throttle to go faster, press to brake to slow down, and wiggle the handle bars to go round corners.

I stay pretty central on the bike, and dont really move around under normal conditions. But when the pace hots up, or I'm just trying to keep up, then i shift my body weight to the inside of the corner - not alot, probaly not visible to anyone, but enough to put weight on the inside peg a bit more and to allow myself to lever the bike over. I'll also hang the top half of my body out a bit, helping the bike round turns.

The R1 guy is a ****, BTW, and probably knows not alot. I bet he can't ride slow, fast....

I wonder what he'd make of my bike, 33bhp, topbox, handlebar muffs...

Would describe your style as 'flowing, assured and confident'. I didn't spot any knee down / hanging off stuff but in terms of skill I think you're beyond all that anyway:D

My riding style is a bit random really. I try to experiment with different things I've read about whenever I go out. Today I've been going sideways  sort of, a little tiny bit, accidently

My riding style is "crippo/policeman". This has been kindly refered to as the Hailwood School... But it works, since from my lofty non-hung-off riding position I can see for miles, and I'm thinking about going round corners instead of getting my knee down

Mine changes depending on who with, where and when I'm riding.

50% of the time I'm commuting defensively in textiles sitting as upright as i can trying to predict and see everything and anything that could happen whilst commuting before it actually does.

25% of the time I ride with my girlfriends dad and friends, who all teach ROSPA/IAM/DAS, this mostly consist of me trying to learn as much of their advanced lines and techniques as I can take in.

25% of the time I'm out hooning by myself solo using a mixture of the above and just having fun. Unless I'm making very good progress I rarely find it necessary or of any benefit at all to move about massively on the bike.

What is funny is following your typical fairweather weekend warrior on his SS1000, completely hanging off the bike twitching all over the place at a stupidly slow pace. Whilst your sat behind being held up on a relatively budget 650.

as for mr patterson.. what he didnt tell you is is that for 1% of his riding he likes to over take cars on corners near matlock lol, ;) then leaving everyone behind caravans for 5 mins lol, and having to pull over lol,

Ahhhh however I have ridden that road 20000000000 time before, I cant remember the exact part where I did that but on the whole route corners that appear blind but often arnt. Theres several parts where you can look and monitor way way ahead and see thats nothing is coming to plan overtakes :p.

I would never over take without knowing its safe to do so ;) my mortgage depends on it.

im not a knee down hanging off kinda guy, i suppose the main reason is i cant be bothered with all that fandango.

infact my **** dont even move off my seat at all, funny really, i can easily keep up with the knee down massive on the roads, infact they sometimes slow me down (dont mean to sound big headed, but it has happened in the past)

I suppose the answer to the R1 numpty should have been "my riding style varies, but definitely does NOT involve head down, **** up, all the time, no idea what's in my mirrors, praying I don't get busted by the police, because the bike is so uncomfortable I can only bear it when riding way too fast for my skills, wishing I was on a bike I didn't feel the need to show off on and I have to ride at double the limit everywhere, except on the bends when I get overtaken by 50cc scooters due to my complete lack of cornering ability that I have to make up for on the straights with my R1"

I rest my case.

I can't help but think that there is a certain anti-litre sports bike attitude(or maybe that should be sports bike) among some SV owners.

Sure some have bought a sports/expensive bike straight after passing their test....but so what....its their cash at the end of the day.

Also it seems to be presumed that if someone has a better bike, then they must automatically be an ********!

The bloke that came over to talk to LyleJ, might of just been being friendly. After all its surely better that he came over for a chat, rather than ignoring him!

Having met a diverse group of bikers, tbh there isn't really a particular group that has an excess of nobs amongst their ranks.

Well, calling lyle's SV a 'girls bike' isn't a very friendly comment in my book. It just sounds like the typically dismissive, nob-headed comment of a weekend warrior to me.:-D
