Just been for my first run after leave and holiday about 4 weeks in total.

My god it hurt.:smt088

Made the mistake of trying the same pace and the same route.

It’s mad how quickly your fitness can come down again.

I saw your age on another thread so you have no excuse!! Me being er just a bit older, I haven't run for nearly 3 weeks - sore left hip flexor mainly, but I'm running tonight and I know it will be a struggle. I'm doing a marathon on 28 October and I desperately need to ramp up the miles again, should really do 20 at the weekend.

Wondering if anyone has a Garmin 201 or 301 - are they worth the shekels?

I know, it probably was not as slow as i thought, but it felt harder. a good few weeks off and a week at an AI hotel in Corfu has not helped.
You just know in yourself its not as flowing or relaxed if you know what i mean.

I have a garmin 305 and I won't go for a run without it now. When I got it I though it would be a 5 minute wonder.

You can download training schedules for it, which for a novice like me is excellent.

Sweatshop are currently knocking the Garmin 205 out a bit cheaper than usual.

Add the Garmin and the Asics Kayano's together and you soon find out that running is not a cheap hobby, which to me was a suprise.

I actually managed to get a pair of trainers changed due to it as they had started to fall apart and I had an acurate record of the mileage due to the Garmin, so got them replaced without too much trouble.

Blimey you use Kayanos!! I'm a cheapskate and refuse to pay over £100. Now use Mizuno Wave something or others. TVM for views on Garmin, they're cheep on Amazon so I might take the plunge.

what are they then??

Yeah I have only been running since December and am now on my 2nd (actually 3rd, as one pair was replaced).

I don't reckon I would still be running without them as I am a moderate over-pronator.

I am going to try and get some cheaper ones which do the job if I can find some that are suitable for hauling my fat-ass around.

I honestly thought that running would be cheap, mind you I thought that about motorbikes too - how wrong could I be!!!!

I've got a treadmill in my garage which I've just started using... 25 mins in total so far (5 mins warming up - 20 mins at varying running speeds - 5 mins cool down) followed by about 20 mins wandering 'round my front room after trying to avoid extreme aches the day or so after.

My head was a bright red tomato.

Even though it was hard work, it reminded me how much I used to enjoy running...

Hopefully I'll be able to resist the computer to spend at bit of time on it most evenings... :p

Those of you who actually go out... I salute you. I find it much easier atm to stop running and drop onto my couch to die.

I've got the 305.

I never used to wear a watch when just going out for a run, just glance at the clock on the way in and out.
The 305 is great though. Confirmed what I suspected, that my pace was really variable, and helped me to even it out. I also found it good for doing long runs without a pre planned route. You can just go out in general direction, take random routes , turn around when you've gone far enough, and still know exactly how far you've been.

Having said that, I only bought it because it was temporarily reduced in price on amazon.

Blimey, if I had room in my garage for a treadmill, it would get filled with another bike, pretty damned sharpish!;)

:D One day maybe... But I've also got a car to pay to run so a second bike would just gather dust and cost money... kinda like my current bike is...

Just had a look at those Garmin thingys, they look fun. I want one. Really should get some decent running shoes first though.

Running shoes first IMHO it is the most important thing make sure that you know what running style you have or go to a decent shop and have your gait analysis done, in most places it is free.

www.sweatshop.co.uk (http://www.sweatshop.co.uk) have some sale shoes at the moment, the only difference with the shoes is the colour as most shoes change colours from spring/Summer to autumn/winter.

Then treat yourself to a garmin, you can download some pretty maps after you've run too.

I got on my push bike this morning and you can adjust the garmin for cycling so it gives you MPH etc.

I'm booked in to get my gait analysed by the Asics people at John Lewis in Reading in a couple of weeks :D

You probably have a good idea of how you run anyway, so the gait analysis just confirms what you already thought.

Worth it IMHO though, good luck.

I'm pretty clueless! I'm hoping they'll be able to advise me what sort of footwear to get and then I'll be better at running:D

I always thought a great invention would be a treadmill hooked up to a computer. when you wanted to walk around in a cyber world RPG you actually have to walk on the treadmill! I would do so much excercise!

If you land on the outside of your foot (as most people do) - Over pronator

Land flat - Neutral

If you land on the inside of your foot - Supinator

http://www.nbwebexpress.com/achieve_more/running_gait.asp#pronate

or

http://www.runnersworld.ltd.uk/pronation.htm

I was confused as hell when I first started looking at it as it sounds a bit complicated but actually its not.

Once you've bought your shoes and get more into running it doesn't stop there you'll be buying all these things you had never dreamed even existed.

You will even start contemplating wearing comfy trackie bottoms out - haven't done it yet but looked at them a couple of times and thought how nice they would feel on my tired legs......V.SAD:shock:

I need some new running shoes, as my New Balance are more like Old Worn-Out Balance now. Do you know if Sweatshop do gait analysis, as there's one fairly close to where I live.

I think they do in some stores - my local Sweatshop doesn't in terms of video but their staff will make you run in the shoes you try on, which is just as good IMO.

I know that She Runs He Runs in bluewater does and that is part of the sweatshop group.

Give them a bell, some of the stores do Adidas footscan which is also supposed to be good. There are some good bargains at the moment.

Find ones online that you think might suit as they are often cheaper online.........a mate of mine went into the shop found the same shoes, but more expensive, so mentioned the online price and they matched it.

Happy days.

I love my shoes but am tempted to try some of the white/orange ones that are in the sale to see if theey last any longer.
