There was a chat room set up, generally used when the forums were having problems (its alot more stable these days). BU that was set up by a member, and was sort of third party - not officialy affiliated with the .org

The general concensus is that it wouldnt be so great, and infact is alot easier to chat on here, as you can keep track of conversations alot easier.

We tried it before and the third party gably chat room we setup nobody used...

Also I've noticed our web proxy at work tends to block access to sites that have a chat facility, I think this is becoming more common now so if we did bolt a chat function on it might well restrict people from being able to use the forum from work.

We've discussed as mods before and the general consensus was thanks, but its not for the org.

If you want to chat use MSN, or alternatively as supervox pointed out nip into the megathread as thats what its for...
