Damn it! On my way back from the GM rideout I had a drag race with a rather gorgeous looking red ZX7R. I have to say this thing moved. While he didn't totally leave me for dust he pulled away and got some distance on me and I was really giving it some (although not pinned back). I'm a little dissapointed that my bike being a new 600cc machine cannot keep up with a 12 year old design but then I guess 150cc extra does help with the midrange and my bike is mainly top end power and speed :(. It's funny though, I've had two ZX7R's and I don't remeber them being that quick. It also sounded lot fruitier than my ZX7R which had a full Akrapovic race system. Methinks it may have been tweaked a little? I guess the only consolation comes from me overtaking him on a long left hander, that almost made up for it.
Hmm...........ZX10R........................:rolley es:

Modern 600s have sh*t midrange unfortunately.

My old ZX-6R 636 B2 wouldn't have a problem keeping up with one of them.
It could keep up with ZX-9R's and older blades if you rode it properly.
I suspect the other guy was maybe better at launching? Then again the 07 model is supposed to be flatter in the mid range than the old 636.

Had it been Green , you would have had no chance.

We were already moving when he shot off. I guess it could have been a 9R, some of them had the same rear as the ZX7R. damn quick either way, I was impressed.
Yeah could have been a 9R and he caught you with your pants down bogged in the mid range. I've seen shed loads of them in red.

I remember getting ready to blast off after the roundabout and he had so much more torque it was mad. Ah well. I still owned him in the twisties.

Feel free to disprove my statement using as an example a supersport bike of 600cc or less from the last 5 years. :)

Less midrange than what? An SV650? Don't think so. CBR600RR03 would **** over an SV650 midrange (no offense people). It's just that an SV's midrange starts at 5ish thousand rpm and the midrange on the CBR600RR doesn't start until 8,000 rpm.

Evening all.
In a similar vein.....Every now & again, & despite me being a touch long in the tooth, I get enticed into playing silly beggars at the lights by a Power Rangeer type on a 600. Usually when they stare at me whilst playing a tune with the throttle, (look at my C**K everyone).
My current hack is a 1989 XJ900 which on a good day has only around 80 horses at the wheel, but what these new rider types don't know is that it can get it down fast, plus weighing several tons it's unlikely to wheelie. No skill required, just dump the clutch & whack it open! (shame about the brakes:D)
Many a Power Ranger has been caught out over the years, & usually pull an unexpected wheelie in their haste to catch me. So watch out Guys & Gals, that old Git next to you, on the old black Yam, with the scruffy gear on could be me!:D:D
Cheers.
Blah, blah, blah.
I think we may have met.
I'll get my power ranger jacket.
TAXI!

Morning all.
I doubt we've met Scoobs, even my old brain would remember someone with lumps on his lid, where his horns are!:D
Cheers.

Yet another repetition of a commonly held misconception.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I think it was performance bikes who a few years ago showed the 636cc zx6r out accelerated a zx9r, probably due to a good spread of power and being a lot lighter. Of course, the 636 wasn't a 600, and had a decent midrange unlike modern 600cc and less IL4s.
I suppose one could consider the midrange to start at over halfway to the redline, rather than being centred around that point. Or possibly that part of the rev band where most people are sat at doing their everyday road riding. I hope any bikers who habitually do their cruising at 8k rpm use earplugs, because it would seem a very loud way to ride. :)

I habitually cruise at 15k rpm and yes I do use earplugs. Thank you.
