Hi all, well the bike is starting to take shape now. I must admit, a couple of weeks ago (the first picture) I was so worried that it would never get finished but its starting to look good....

What springs did you fit? I can see they are progressive, or am I wrong? Im thinking of getting some ohlins internals for my forks, I dont know if I should have linear, or progressive (its for road riding)

LOL i had to seperate the dyson and the qualcast. As you can see they were squaring up to each other! I was just using it to suck all the glass fiber away as we dremel'd and drilled it whilst fitting. The springs are Hyperpro with 15W oil. Gonna see how I get on with them and possible go up to 20W.
Yeah I will be racing in the Rookie, BEMSEE Mini-Twins Series next year. I cant wait!

We will see astarhero........ we will see...... ;-)

Good to see you got those bungs on there! I actually had a thought yesterday that they're not the right ones for a fared bike but it's good to see you got them fitted nicely. Bet you had fun drilling the holes!

Keep up the good work.
:)

Sideshow#36
19-09-07, 11:08 AM
Yeah they dont quite stick out far enough but im just going to pack out the back of the bung with a couple of M8 washers. Yeah the hole was a bit of a nightmare to do.... until we realised that a dremmel was the way forward!

Got the same front fairing myself, but am after the seat unit now the bike is track only.

The seat unit is from JHS in Bristol. And I also got the rear shock form there too. However its a quite costle £500.

Woo hoo, fairings and teank etc all off for painting today. Bike looks bare once again. :-(
However atleast I have a rear wheel, rear caliper and my new braided hoses back on the bike.

Sideshow#36
22-09-07, 03:47 PM
Well a lot was achieved yesterday. Re-Fitted the rear wheel with new bearings and green rim tape.... ooohhh. Calipers serviced and back on, they look like new. Wavey disc and new sprocket fitted. Braided rear hose fitted and bled etc.... also in green ooohhhh.
The major job last night was changing the front cylinder head. Its a fairly easy job once you get into it, just as long as you double and triple check you have the timing all sorted.
Well here is a few pictures.

The donor engine.

Yeah the bodywork is gonna be matt grey with a green sort of pinstripe affair.
Sort of stumbled accross the engine by chance. The only cylinder heads I could find were between £70 & £100 and none looked in really good nick. Found the engine on e-bay and paid £164 for the whole lump. So I have 90% of a spare engine. I can either sell bits off or keep em on the off chance...

Sideshow#36
22-09-07, 06:39 PM
Well hopefully I should have it started by tomorrow. Just borrowing a mates spare tank while mines in for spraying. Oil changed, radiator flushed and filled. Can't believe how quick its all come together... shame the battery is uber flat.

22-09-07, 08:48 PM
Was that battery knackered I gave ya? A pinstripe bike eh? That should be interesting. Is it a normal cylinder head then and what was wrong with your one?

Sideshow#36
22-09-07, 08:59 PM
Sorry mate forgot to pm you about that, yeah battery was duff. Connected it to the optimator and it just came up red staright away. Cheers anyway bud.
Yeah it was just a straight cylinder head swap. I think its the second picture on this thread about the cylinder head. I sheared the 2 exhaust header bolts on the front head. No bother, ill centre pop em, drill em and use an easy out. Nope not budging. Ok i'll drill em to 6.5mm and re tap the threads. Only one problem, I was given duff info by a dealer about how long the bolts were and when to stop drilling. He told me there was a 15mm air gap after the bolt, before the outer head starts. NOPE!!!! Bolt was flush with the head and ended up drilling straight through to the water jacket! Gonna send off the one I knackered and see if they can repair it so I can have a spare engine.

monkey
22-09-07, 09:47 PM
DOH! That's a bit crap. Thought battery'd had it. I should've charged it sooner. Bet you can't wait to get the bike on the track?!

Sideshow#36
22-09-07, 09:50 PM
Yeah, the main delay is just waiting for the bodywork coming back from the painters now. Should be the end of the month for that.

GET IN!!!!!! Fitted my mates spare tank and connected it all up. Started first time off the button. With all the stuff ive recently done I was expecting something not to work. But everything passed. The sidestand bypass and clutch bypass all worked. There was a lot of smoke to start with but that was just some exhaust heat wrap bedding in. So happy, just want the fairings back now. Oh and the M4 race system sounds superb! :-)

Well, sorry I havnt posted on here for a while. Not much to report really.
The fairings were delayed but should have them on monday.
Monday is a busy day mind. I have to be in Rugby for 9am to sit my licence exam and sort the rest out. Then back home to pick up the fairings. Then load the bike up and drop it off at PDQ for dyno testing.
I pick it up tuesday evening and hopefully should have a completed race bike by Wednesday. :-)

Well here is the last photo of the bike before the fairings arrive.
I took it for quick drive around the estate today, just to check everything was good before I sent it to be dyno'd. Well yes, except I forgot I had fitted all new pads and discs.
I did the 8 yr old inner schoolboy thing and gave it a wristful. Cool it picks up really quick.... better stop now. Oh S**t these galfers feel like they were made by a carpenter. Just managed to stop it in time before the speedbump
Still, everything works and as soon s it all beds in I'm sure it will be superb. Just hope i can do it justice.

Well hi all. The bike is now...... FINISHED!!!!
Well almost, just needs Dyno'ing on Friday.
Cant believe how good the paint job is. I wanted to get it out on the drive today to get some proper shots but it has lashed it down all day long so ive only taken a couple of shots in the garage. It doesnt do the bike any justice in my opinion but hey ho. I'll try and take some better ones during the week.
Here it is anyway. With and without decals. Cheers for looking. :D

Sideshow#36
10-10-07, 01:37 AM
Nah, purely gonna be a race bike. Got none or very little interest in road riding these days.
The paint cost me £400 which was for all the fairing, tank, mudguard and infill panels. Plus painted numberboards, so all in all a top deal.
The roudels are because im in the RAF. Looks good.

Nah mate im on leave. Let me guess.... Leuchars???
Yeah the RAFMSA does do quite a lot towards it. As far as I can work out I get all petrol costs to and from races through JPA. I get any track test days off as extra leave and traveling time as extra leave. So I'll finish workm at 12 on thursdays. Set up camp, then friday for the weekend practice sessions and then the racing on sat/sun.
I'm also sure that you can apply for a SportsLottery Grant too but I havnt asked about that yet.

ianofbhills
10-10-07, 01:54 AM
yep i'm at leuchars how did you guess :) Just finished work actually

seems a very very reasonable deal i'm really interested into looking into it. Only thing putting me off is the distances involved in travelling to tracks what with being based up in scotland and all. mileage claims on jpa might get interesting!

There is already a lad on my sqn who's just moved up from brize who raced a cbr 6 last year i think i need to have a friendly chat with him.

good luck with the racing i'll keep an eye out for you in that active magazine ;)

Nice one.

Cna i make a suggestion though.

Ditch the Lovely helmet.

Just get a decent plain coloured one thats didnt set you back an extra £100 just coz of the paint on it. You'll hate yourself for it when you try and stop your forward momentum with nothing but your head for the first time.

Sideshow#36
26-02-08, 01:30 AM
Yeah that is my helmet I bought about a year ago for road riding. But I have no road bike anymore so if I crash in it its no real bother to me. However I did follow your train of thought and Ive just bought a spare one. An Arai Chaser... In plain grey. It makes sense!
I'll probably put a few news and results bits and bobs on the org but i'm actually having a go at my own website. Its only £1.99 a month so I thought hey why now. I'll stick up the link when its all done.

What Rank you in the RAF?

Im thinking of converting my old SV into a track bike and trying to get into racing. Only issue is I doubt ill get any RAF backing which isn't so great. apparently its only a privileged few (lucky bugger) that get the backing. Sigh. Ill have to save up a fair bit and do some bits of work to the bike in the mean time. :)

Have fun racing.

SAC... Based at RAF Fylingdales... Middle of nowhere, Falklands in the UK etc etc. ha ha. Lucky me.

Ill see if I can contact them. Only issue is I have no idea how. Ill ask around on camp I think there are a couple of people who race bikes somewhere here. :D

Just got to get everything sorted. Had to spend a fair bit of money getting the prilla sorted... Still need some damn discs + pads for that too. Money just goes so fast ha ha.

I do have a few questions if you dont mind answering them.... A couple to put me on.

How do I get a licence? I really am a complete n00b when it comes to this...

Could you list all the mods you have done and (if you dont mind disclosing them) the costs?
