On way to work this morning. Started to go round one of the bends near mine, sun got in my mirrors could see fack all...Flick the tint down, next thing i know i'm on other side of road heading at a 407. My side of the road is a parked Omega, get the bike tilted back upright and slam anchors on, bike dipped in and i came to a stop (thanks Billy for such a useful mod), I felt a knock or a clunk and from what it looks like my pillion footpeg(which i leave out for dropping reasons) caught his front wing/bumper. Light scratch to it. Caught my knee i think cos my armour on my tex's has left a scratch on my knee and i cant turn it out much. He took my details i just fell like a pile of **** and took nothing(not even his plate). Scratch looked like it would come out. Hope it dont go through insurance cos i know they will make a meal outta it and i know a few scratch and dent repairers!

Im ok i think just the knee.

Note to self (provided by Mike) - Be very careful in low sun!

Low sun is a swine, even with dark visors. My car was written off because someone drove into it whilst it was parked. Apparently he didn't see the car at all because he was dazzled by the sun!

It was the parked car that i was headed towards that was my prob, i had to make a sort of braking curve to avoid both and i nearly done it :(

Glad it was nowt more serious mate.

I am really wary of low sun since the lane up to our village runs east-west. The sun is in your eyes going to work and then coming home again this time of year. There's loads of minors and close shaves amongst the locals at this time of year.

Only advice is to slow down a lot, put lights on and look out for cars in the shadow. Going out of the sunlight into the shadow under trees etc is the really scary bit, you just can't see into the shadow until you are in it!

Be safe people.

My advice, don't look at the sun. Look anywhere else but not directly at it. Glad you're ok.

Thing that gets me is that had the parked car i woulda been able to stay outta the way and wouldnt have hit him, but i had to make a sort of curve to stay out the way and avoid both.

Yep, low winter sun keeps on catching people out. In my own experience I'd say it's better to have the dark visor/sunglasses/etc on all the time, I find it much less problematic to ride in a dark patch with my dark visor than to ride through glare without. I wear the dark one more often in winter than in summer, though I carry a clear one as well. And BE CAREFUL! TO be fair, you can't really be too surprised to find out that the sun is in the sky, producing light ;)

Plowsie, glad to hear you're ok - that's the main thing. It could have been much worse if you'd hit the car head-on (although you'd have left a hefty dent :-P ). Hope the insurance doesn't screw you for it either!

So is there no question that the car could have been at fault - best form of defence is attack!
GWS & be careful out there, get the dark visors on during daylight hours.

Nar only the parked car if anything. I was on other side of road nothing to do with the bloke coming towards me.

Here's a little tip for riding into the sun.
When I go on my early Sunday morning ride, I head east for a long way and the sun is low and on my right. As I ride past rows of trees, it's like having a strobe light flashed into my eyes. If I wear sunglasses I can't see when I ride through shaded spots.
I was moaning to a mate who'd just had a ride through the Northwest Territories and he showed me his helmet with a wide strip of black tape across the top of the visor. He said the sunshine was brutal up there, even at midnight, so he'd stuck the tape on and it made a world of difference. Anyway, I've done it to mine and I can say that it really does help. I can't believe it never occurred to me before. If the sun is bright I just dip my head a bit and in the shade I raise it.
