Somebody I worked with years ago went on holiday recently to Cyprus. He forgot to take his UK Driving Licence with him. The rental company said he could take a driving test the next day and get a Cypriot licence. On his return to the UK this licence in theory is valid in the UK for 12 months as a resident of the UK. If he were to get caught speeding and have to produce his licence he may be able to avoid the points by producing the Cypriot licence instead of the UK licence.

Has anybody ever tested this theory?

Or just take the UK test again and get another UK licence, I'm sure there's sufficiently varied bits of ID kicking around, some with your middle name included, some without. When ID cards are made compulsory, get two of those too, then commit bank robberies with one card and be a normal upstanding citizen with the other...

Warning: This may be considered a *teensy* bit illegal.

WE had a local case, where a Vietnamese guy lost his licence for drink driving and was stopped a few days later by the copper who knew he had no license. The guy simply pulled out another licence in a slightly different spelling of his name.

Turned out he had 4 different licences and claimed that he did not know if banned off one he was banned off all.

My wife has a french license. When she got caught by a camera about 5 years ago, she had to go to court and they fined her the usual and set up a "temporary account" (? - can't remember the exact terminology). This registered 3 points against her name and license with the DVLA, if she got to 12 she would have been banned from driving in the UK, though her license to drive in the rest of europe would be unaffected.

I have a Greek licence and tbh it's not true what they asay about avoiding the points and fines etc. Although i've not had any myself, a friend was caught on the motorway doing 105mph and he was taken to court, fined, got 6 points and banned for 6 months.....ALL on his greek licence

This is a very risky option that could lead to a prosecution for attempting to pervert the course of justice. A great deal of efforts to avoid speeding fines lead to this and I assure you it is not what you want.:smt018
A speeding prosecution is very much preferable.

Might be worth a go if you're already on 9 points though

Only if you think it's worth the potential jail sentence and the consequences of having a criminal record.

What he above says. If stopped or flashed they will know you hold a UK licence. If you have 9 points then you need to be more observant. IMHO.

Didn't Jeremy Clarkson get around this by registering his Ford GT on the Isle of Man? Mind you the problems he had with it, he'd have been bettering registering it at the Ford stealership :D
