For years I have got the 'oil and filter' deals from HG, went there last week and they said they no longer did them!!! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oo!!! :smt088 Is this the same policy company wide or just my local one?

It was a cracking deal ....

Also who makes the HG own brand oil?

On what basis do you say that???

I have used Motul Semi that you get in the HG oil and filter deal for ... er ... best part of a decade in ALL my bikes ... including race engines ... I have NEVER had any oil related problems ...

On the basis that when I use it the engine always sounds louder and I get more clutch slip and related problems, put some more expensive stuff in and it goes away. Plus a mate I have who been working with bikes for years and is also a mech in the army says the same, it just doesn't seem as 'nice' as the other stuff.

So what DO you use?

p.s. I have never had clutch slip (from a healthy clutch) using this oil .. and again, that includes under race conditions ...

Interesting to hear negative stuff about it as I thoguht it was great stuff!!

I have used the Motul stuff for the past 3 changes. Now the 'deal' is out of the window, its the same price as buying Silkoline and a OEM filter, which i'll be doing at the next change. Its one of those things, you dont notice any difference until you change something. I noticed once when i ran the Castrol GTS. My SV drank it like it was water. Put the silkoline back in, and the oil consumption almost stopped. I dont notice any excessive consumption with the Motul, but i do have clutch issues, which may be down to the clutch, but it will good to see.

likewise ive always used the HG deal on all my bikes.... funnily enough next week i was gonna do the first oil change on my sv.

so anyone reccommend any other oil for around the same price ( not taking into account price of oil filter etc..

Wow!!! and I thought it was just me. First time I used the Motul oil(HG deal) I thought it felt rubbish. I never felt very comfortable with it in the bike......emperically based ;)

Took to getting a Highflow filter which appeared to be better quality than the HG one as well and using Halfords oil Silkolene oil.....only getting the HG deal when air filter needed changing. The oil was then done earlier than usual.

I've been either using Silkolene or Bel-Ray EXP, when I put the Bel-Ray in it even sounds quieter.

Ok all, as people have said, I have been using it so long I perhaps don't know the difference any more ... (I had used lots of brands before that, but oil has moved on in the last decade (thinking about it I have only had the oil and filter deals for about 5-6 years, not 10 … but still the same thing applies)

I’d still refute claims that the Motul stuff is plops as I have never had a problem with it, but I will also accept there might be ‘better’ stuff these days for similar price (if you take the filter deal out of the equation).

Anyhoo, as the filter deal is now over I am happy to try alternatives :)

So silcoline semi seems a popular choice??? How much is it and where do you get it from? Silcoline is Fucs (sp) now isn’t it?

I bought 5l of Motul at the BMF last week for £15.Was that a mistake? Its going in the bike anyway.:)
I have used the HG deal for a few years and not had any issues with Motul.I do change the stuff regularly though.

I usually get own-brand 10W40 semi-syn bike oil and a champion filter at Halfords.
