Hey, firstly thanks for all the kind messages (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=96757) they really cheered me up whilst in hospital.

This is for everyone after the gory details:

Basically I went round a blind corner to find a combine harvester stationary at the side of the road, covering the grass verge and a car coming the other way. with no exit I hit the brakes and hoped for the best. Next thing i remember is swearing my head off at the police officers as they (under medic supervision) put my leg back into place from being twisted round the wrong way. My head has blocked all vision of this and any memory of the actual crash. next thing i remember is being wheeled into the ambulance. the next few days are very hazy. Was in intensive care for 3 days-ish and in hospital for a total of 2 weeks.

Well the Damage..
broken femurs (left leg), damaged hamstring, broken right arm, fractured hand, dislocated elbow, bruised liver & slight internal bleeding. Had to have 45 staples in my leg (massive scar) and 16 in my arm, have a metal pin going half way down in my leg and pins and plates in my arm, which is gonna be in a cast til next week.

Lets just say I'm not walking for quite a few weeks yet, back home and on crutches just now, but I really cannot move far. I am very lucky 2 be honest, full recovery is estimated at about a year.

For those that want a list of damage to the bike can come and see a list as I aint typing it out, and haven't got any photos yet (the list is tres looooooong!). but my independent valuation valued the repair at over £7000. Still waiting for the insurance to work stuff out.

Glad to hear you're on the mend OYB.

Hope the recovery goes quickly.

£7000 damage? So does that mean you're selling a crash damaged bike for £7000? ;) :takeabow:

Now that's just genius on your part.

Take it easy on those crutches.

Cheers

This thread is nothing without pictures!

So you did £7000 worth of damage to a bike you sold for £2800? That's got to be a record of some sort... :smt045

If there's anything you need a hand with don't be shy about asking mate and we'll form an orderly queue.

Now for god's sake get some rest!

Good to see you well enough to come on here and let us know how you are.

One lucky man. What speed do you/police reckon you were doing when you hit the harvester?

on yer bike
22-09-07, 01:17 PM
the speed was inpossible to measure by the police due to the bike being stoped right after braking by a huge chunk of metal, not got the full report yet tho, this is goin on the initial report, i estimate i went round the corner at 40mph so will have hit just below that due to the very small braking distance.

22-09-07, 01:22 PM
Yeah its always a worry what you will come across when goin round a bend.

What are the police saying. Is the driver of the combine being taken to task for stopping too close to the bend?

on yer bike
22-09-07, 01:45 PM
again, this was just the initial report, still waiting on a police statement, although speaking to the police officers they have said they are not charging either party, but my personal accident solicitor is looking into it all 4 me.

Here you go.. these are the images of the injuries today, 2 weeks after the accident. I am posting links rather than the pics on the page so i don't gross people out. My facial scars have all cleared so all that is left there is a black eye. I was wearing a dainese jacket, jeans, steel boots and an arai helmet. facial damage was done by the corner of the combine smashing through the visor.

They're some injuries pal!! You just concentrate on getting better, to hell with the bike. Get another one once you're back on your feet, and the injuries are healed up.

RE- THE T-SHIRT: I'm sure the gang can get together, and wheel your hospital bed out to the nearest pub for a couple of drinks. Would beat the boredom of being stuck in a ward all day!!! Not sure what the doctors and nurses would say though about you being wheeled back trolleyed on lager.....:clown::clown::):):)

The t shirt is slightly ironic since I am unable to touch alcahol until December, I tried a chippy to celebrate getting out of hospital and it made me so ill that I think thats out of the question 2, So yeah thats a no go.

Duckman the tshirt is 2 for £20 or something at the officers club.

Mother of Pearl! Grossorama! What is that side/liver pic all about? I thought it was off Doctor Who!

What Duck-man said about the T-shirt but I don't think they let 40 year olds into the Officers Club...

Like the messages on your cast by the way, what does that one say about 'Loserville'? And who did the wee love heart? :smt055 Aww.

GWS again.

Great to hear that your out mate thats the first of many steps and remember take it one step at a time

That will be one excellent scar to impress the burds with...... just dont tell them you rode a bike into a parked tractor ;)

Re the bike did you have a buyer ...... I thought you had sold it

on yer bike
25-09-07, 09:01 PM
It sold on ebay the night before the crash, but the buyer pulled out when i was in hospital before i got a chance to pull out myself.

bad news with the arm, was supposed to come out of the cast today, but now its another 2 weeks as they were woried about it moving out of its socket again. 16 more weeks for the femurs to have healed a noticable amount.

On Yer Bike

Firstly, I'll PM you just to let you know that I have finally received your PM and made contact.

So sorry for the delay. I'net has been either down or very unreliable and only just got your PM and seen your details on the site.

Bad luck fella. Sounded like a 'Biggy'. Hope you get well really soon. Glad you are out of hospital. Hope they made a real fuss of you. Any plans to get back on a bike again or are you going to leave it for a bit. Hope you are back on your feet and up and around soon.

So sorry to hear about the bike too, although I guess in the long run the £7000 insurance quote is better than getting the £2800 from the idiot in Ireland. He really doesn't know what he is missing. Sorry I couldn't raise the extra cash, otherwise I would have taken if off your hands in a heartbeat.

I know what riding in the country is like. I live in rural Moray and CHs and Tractors are a pain in the ****, not least for all the crap they leave on the road, let alone running into one. Hope you manage to get some compensation for your injuries.

Get well very soon. Hope to see you back on the forum again soon, with better news.

All the best

Just had a letter from the insurance and they do not want to claim against the other driver, as legally it is my fault even though hazards were not used by the stopped combine. I should have crawled round the blind corners at 1mph (and probably be hit by some car from behind for going too slow, as they wouldn't have seen me, although I would prob be killed, that would then be they're fault apparently.)

I was half expecting this result, but still think the combine should have got part blame for not using hazards and stopping so close after a corner.

Now its just the long wait for my insurance money to come through, the engineer valued it as a write off as mentioned above how much it would actually cost to repair, so have been told that I should get a letter in the post offering something in the region of £3400, But I'm waiting til I have something in writing before I start spending, don't trust insurance companies much, especially when they are run by banks..

And sorry guys, but this time the money is going on a cage.

Coffee duly spat on screen. Thanks for that! I didn't realise the combine was a write off too! :smt082

Hope you're mending ok mate. Bummer about the claim result tho, he should be held part-responsible at the very least.
