Just looking at insurance quotes for some bikes I've seen in Autotrader.

Can anybody tell me why the Factory (better suspension, plus some other trick bits) should attact a premium of £150 quid over the next model down with exactly the same engine, bhp, performance, etc.

That kind of difference can't just be down to theft risk can it?

Looks to me like the insurance companies charge more for having the word "Factory" on your insurance certificate!

The factory costs more money to buy new than the standard bike does.

I think it has Ohlins, and OZ forged wheels and none of that lot comes cheap, hence the insurance hike, if you crash it, it costs more to repair a factory than the standard bike...

I suspect thats what it is anyway.

Yeah fair enough. You tend to think of insurance premiums being related to performance or theft attraction. Suppose the ohlins forks, brembo brakes and OZ wheels are right in the firing line at the front end for a lot of accidents. Just looked like a hell of a hike for a bike that doesn't go any quicker!

New cost shouldn't have anything to do with it on an 04 bike though. The 'R was a 7000 miler and the Factory a 13000 miler, put the estimated value on both at 4500.

I'm paying £290 or thereabouts for the SV at the moment, these premiums just show why a lot of folk end up buying an SV!

My Girlfriend's son has just used them to get a quote for My Audi A4 Avant 2.4 V6.

Its probably worth a couple of grand due to high milage but the quote came back as £6266... Third Party Only! :D :D

He needs a better paper round :)

Well thats damn good. I'm in a wee village in Scotland, garaged, 31 y/o and the quote was £822 as you can see above. What are you paying for the SV (assuming thats what you've got)?

I was quoted a while back for a GSXR-1000 K7. They wanted (and I kid you not!) £10,000.00 a year!!

Now THAT is a stupid insurance quote!!

(Esp when other insurers would do it for around the £600 mark)

To quote a chap I was talking to in the pub who has had both, "The factory is like a completely different bike, the suspension in particular is just so much better. The Aprillia factory bikes are, apart from the Ducati R variants, the most sorted "standard" bikes you can get in terms of included aftermarket tuning parts. I'd never buy a standard and put extra stuff on it again. You end up not having even half the stuff off the factory, despite spending more money on it and it'll be pricier to insure."

The chap concerned's only tweaks on his factory were number plate hanger, IIRC.

As to why it's more expensive to insure. Presumably the cost is driven up by it being more expensive to replace, more trick (and hence nickable) and perhaps the better suspension doesn't decrease accidents, as it bestows more confidence in the bike so people push their luck more and perhaps have more accidents than the stock bike? I know when riding a bike with a knackered shock I certainly ride more conservatively, probably moreso than the actual increased risk requires.

tbh my bike insurance is quite cheap i have 4 years no claims, the sv in the IP post code was about £220 tpft age 19 or 20,
but the xjr 1300 in my LS12 postcode was £350 tpft, i currently cannot insure the new factory in my ls postcode even if i caould afford one!

You can do a thousand pound's worth of damage to a Factory by riding too fast up a kerb, like you say a lot of the pricey parts are very vulnerable...

If you want to talk stupid insurance quotes, I got quoted £6900 with a £500 excess, TPF&T, for the SV this year :smt108

I'm starting to realise that as this thread goes on. All those quotes are comprehensive not TPFT and so is the insurance on my SV at £290 (equity red star). My excess on the SV is £300 (200 plus 100 voluntary).

I've stopped looking at the Factory because I couldn't get a £500+ a year increase past my wife.

The bits bolted onto the factory will cost the best part of 6K over a standard bike, hence the increase.

That was the Factory, SV costs 290, only got I years no claims. I'm a born again biker with a 12 year gap, so my no claims expired and I had to start again last year.

i used confused for car insurance and they were really good,
i put the bike details in , out of interest and the cheapest that came back for me was £822, now at the moment im paying £236 through CIA for a kwak ZRX1200..........they were quite away out, one of the companies at almost £1k had the balls to ring me and offer to be theyre previous quote by £50 if i bought it the same day.
i politely declined.

some insurance companies quote stupidly high as they know you wont pay it.
they only want to insure certain people/vehicles but the law says they have to quote you for all types

The most stupid insurance quote I had was the guy on the phone when I wanted to insure a new car. I had just bought a 1.4 Diesel Metro, he said the quote went up. Why?

.
.
.
.
."Because it's a sportier model than you had before"

Now beat that for a stupid quote!
