View Full Version : Quick question bout the usual reg/rec problem
If you have the, seemingly common, reg/rec problem, how often can you expect the battery to be flat.
Eg. It goes dead, you get it going again (bump/jump) take it home, then carry on riding from there, or charge and carry on. Is there an expected time frame before it will die/fail to start again if it's the reg/rec issue, or is it a case of how long is a piece of string.
20mins i read in another post, which thinking back sounds about right
And would this be most times it's ridden?
If the battery was fully charged overnight and then lasted say, a week, before another problem happened, then it was jump started and was fine again (touch wood at th moment 2 days later) would this then suggest it's probably not the reg/rec?

The reg/rec starts to go, giving initialy intermittent problems from what I have read from posts. My reg/rec was on its way out, giving intermittent problems. It does this when it starts to get too hot, and overtime it'll just fry and completly shut the bike down, I think.

Slight correction. The first time it went it lasted about a week after a full charge on a trickle charger. They Friday I jumped it when it stalled at traffic lights and wouldn't go again. Go home alright. Started yesterday and this morning, although didn't ride it. Then just went out and tried starting it again (this time with the lights on) all geared up to go out, and now it wont go again.

Have you got a multimeter and a haynes manual? It'll tell you how to check the electrics and deduce if the reg/rec is buggered. If it is, then just get a new one (about £100 as a genuine suzuki spare). It would seem to me that it is, but best to actualy test before splashing the cash

I wouldnt go for the suzuki spare
CBarrrrr seems to be a common and easy swap
Mine did the same as yours is doing, it was intermittent then if I didnt use it for a couple of days it wouldnt start. I got to work one day and it was completely dead after riding for 30/40 mins and doing about 25 miles, charged it at work then rode home OK (I'm assuming with a knackered reg) with full lights on. I'd say its your reg/rec but I'm no expert. I replaced mine with a CBR one.
Before Sid comes along do a search for reg/rec and user name Sid_Squid (he knows his stuff)
well i took thebattery in to halfords today and they said it was knackered. So hopefully replaceing the battery will have sorted it, should know in aweek or so I guess.

Mine blew last summer on a particularly hot day. Spent hours doing tests with a multimeter, and then unplugged the reg/rec to find it like this!
