30-09-07, 09:50 PM
As there has been quite a bit of interest in joining the Thames Valley IAM (more info here (http://www.tvam.org.uk/)) herewith a thread dedicated to the day.
The plan:
1. For those who want to meet before we go to the IAM meet then we could meet at 8.00am at the Shire Horse.
2. Be at the St Crispins School between 8.30 and 9.00am (here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF8&q=RG40+1SS&ll=51.411065,-0.822408&spn=0.006545,0.014462&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1))
3. Do our observed rides, see what IAM is about...we are done by 1pm
4. Quick rideout for lunch?
Jon
Mr Ape - any chance you could sticky this for me ?

I'm in...
If anyone is planning on coming from the east, I can pick-up at Fleet or Hartley Whitney en-route. Bit of a bonus as I actually know where I'm going and what to do when you get there. :)
Make sure you pack stick-on beard and fake paniers to ensure you fit in. ;)

I voted no but could have done with the reason "8am on a Sunday does not exist for me". Have fun!

FYI - this is the response I got from my enquiry to TV IAM (if any of you want the attachement then give me a shout):
Hi Jon
Thanks for the enquiry.
You are indeed correct. The next group observed rides day is Sunday 21 October and we like to get prospective new members their early (09.00) so we can have a chat first to tell you about us, what we do, how we do it etc etc. After the introduction our aim will be to get you out on a no obligation ‘assessment’ ride which is like an ‘observed’ ride but perhaps a little less formal. Hopefully after this you’ll decide to join up.
The other option is of course to jump straight in and either join up in advance by post, or join up when you arrive on the 21st that way you will go out on an Observed ride. Just in case I’ve attached a PDF of our Membership Application form which you can print out as many copies of as you need then just fill them in and either post them back to me or bring them to St Crispins on the Sunday.
If you have any specific questions please get back to me otherwise we’ll see you on the 21 st. Thanks
Regards

Oh and I don't need to go, I'm a riding god. Taught Vale everything he knows.
The above statement is actually not true. I just can't make it.

so who is meeting at the shire horse for this then? Im planing on bringing my old man and a guy i work with whos been looking to do something like this for a while allong. We will be coming from high wycombe so meeting at the shire horse seems like a good idea for me at least as that way its not my responsibilty to sort out directions. And for anyone who thinks that they are a bad rider just wait till you see my old man ride, its terrifying.

I would, but a botched fitment on a screen/tailtidy has left the bike with broken screws and inadequate electrics. Such a shame. :p
You on the hand have 2 bikes that never get any proper use...best let FB have a go. ;)

Its a fecking pain on the R6. You have to loosen the 4 nuts that hold the mirrors, loosen part of the front fairing as it slots into it and then undo the 4 screws that hold it. You then have to charm the new screen into position without the little rubber washers making a bid for freedom.
Don't get me started on the tail tidy.

I supose I could ride your r6 but what would the point be? Its too quiet, has no torque and 4 cylinders. TBH I wouldd rather take the old mans bonnie at least its got character rather than being as bland as ice. On the other hand I guess it could do with someone to get the oil flowing if your not capable and whats the worse that can happen? your chicken strips get smaller?
As for having a go on the deauville, id be well up for that, ive ridden a few r6's but never a deauville and the more bikes you've had a go on the better.

Also just how in the name of god does your screen have electrics in it? I know im no good with wires but jesus christ thats bad. You got a heated front screen so you get warm air blast off the front of the bike?

LOL....thats your interpretation.
Anyhow i've got my treatment plan with my physio now and i can stop wearing my brace in November. From then its hopefully a short time until i can ride. Of course it will be cold and icy, so i'll prob stay in anyway.
So anyone want to take up my offer of showing you where to go ?
Can meet Fleet, Hartley Whitney or Crowthorn.
Bunch of observers meet outside the estate agent in HW about 08:45 and ride in en-mass. I'll probably be with that lot if anyone wants to tag along. Otherwise hopefully see some of you there although probably won't hear about it until I read it on the forum unless you walk about with .ORG hats on.
Mine will be the blue naked SV with a top-box on it (I know, but I have to carry a lot of stuff) and a .org sticker on the swing-arm.
Remember to check the ear-hair of your observer. In general, more hair = grumpier and less inclined to have a laugh.

Mark- If say, 4 of us turn up will we all be able to get observed rides on the day?
If 50 of you turn up there may be a problem. 4-10 won't even raise an eyebrow. Mention what a good job I (Mark Harrington) did of spreading the word when they give you your welcome talk. Then I may also get a free cuppa

So, can we confirm who is actually gonna turn up?
I have an invite to go back to Worcester on saturday as its my birthday, but if there a re a few of us seriously thinking about it then i'll stick around here so I can go.
Thought the Poll covered that or is the TV group becoming as excuse ridden as the GM?
Forecast is a sunny if chilly morning.
I'll be there. And able to lead in anyone from general Fleet direction if you want a bit of hand holding.
Unless it's snowing expect 2-300 bikes there so unless you already know each other you'll find it hard to meet up. If you get there early enough suggest you park in the same place to have a better chance of "bumping into" each other.
Enter the school grounds. BEWARE SPEED CAMERA CLOSE TO ENTRANCE
Turn right going between two buildings. You'll be in a big parking area.
About 50 yards is a turning on the right. Go down there into the smaller parking area.
There's a little area on the right hand side that leads to the fields. Takes about half a dozen bikes. If you all get there before 9 (which you're supposed to do anyway as a newby) good chance you'll be able to park up in more or less the same area.
Oh and no, you do not need to wear hi-viz or an old belstaff. If you turn up in full race leathers with a hump and other go-faster bits your observer is likely to think you are a speed freak and less likely to take you down the faster roads.
Hopefully see you Sunday.

OK, i guess if you guys are meeting at the shire hourse for 8:15 then I will go there too as I can find that easily. I will probably be there at more like 8:25 ish as I live a bit further away. I'll print off a map just incase i miss you lot but I'll do my best. Would be good to park up en mass if there are gonna be so many bikes.

Ok guys, i will not be making this as in an attempt to get my bike sorted ive managed to undo the rear shock and the singarm and parts are all over my garage floor thus its just not going to happen (unless someone is willing to lend me a bike - just kiding)
Now the important bit. I have a friend who i work with who has been looking to do something like this for a while. I have given him directions to the shire horse and told him to be there for 8.15. He is relying on meeting someone at the pub inorder to show him the way to the IAM group. Can someone please confirm that this is ok before tomorrow morning as i want to make sure that hes not riding all that way on his own to find out that there is noone there and he has wasted his sunday morning lie in. His name is Richard, hes fairly old and he rides a 950 something or other, i havnt actually seen it yet but i think it might be a triumph hes not had it long and he had a yam single before that.
Thanks a lot guys and i hope you can look after him and make him feel welcome and i will have my bike back together as soon as possible, given work has calmed down I should be able to get home in time to get some work done on it each night.

However I am going out to watch the game tonight, and depending on the result I may get blindly drunk..:drunken:. If thats the case I'll let you know if I can't make it.

how did it all go? did you guys manage to find my mate at the pub and did everyone have a good time?
There was a good turn-out this week. I took out a guy on a GSX-R 750 who apparently knew everything so not sure why he turned up as all he did was contradict any advice. And another on a TDM who's been riding for years but has never taken the right line round a corner. First guy will get lot out of it if he stops arguing and the second guy saw today as a revelation.
Anyone else get a decent ride out? You'll find if you join up your observer will typically go on much quicker rides than these open days as on days like today you have no idea of the abilities and mental state of the newby so tend to set all sorts of ground rules to keep it safe.
Hopefully some of you turned up and got something useful out of it.

Jon, Tonyk, FB's mate and I went along.. Was really good, enjoyed it and will join on weds when I get paid. Jon and I went out with the same observer who was a nice guy and showed us a fair bit.He looked like Ricky Gervais :-) Was amazed at the amount of bikes and people milling around!
Mark, have you got a blue curvey with a top box? Think I saw your bike as we left, it was parked on its own around the circle bit at gone 1pm..

Yep, nice bloke, he joined up straight after his observed ride..
Yep, that was me parked on my own. Was your ovbserver Roger? on a brand new Pan? He's one of the Basingstoke team observers and does look a lot like Ricky.
So was it what you expected?
One tip is if you want to make a go of it, get out with your observer as often as you can. Quite a few just do 2-3 rides then lose interest. that way you don't build up the relationship with your tutor observer, do not get to have a good time (once you get a good relationship with your observer and he trusts you, it gets a LOT quicker) and then never get as far as going for your test. Given that your joinig fee includes your first test fee, this is a bit of a shame.
If you got on well with Roger I think he's looking for more associates at the moment. I'll be seeing him Monday night and can suggest he may want to pull you from the pool rather than leave it up to the usual random allocation. On the other hand if you thought he was a total ass I'll not bother :)

The ride was pretty much what I expected but the whole scale of the thing was bigger than I thought it would be. It a huge club with a lot going on isnt it! I would be happy with Roger as a tutor but I may be too far away as i'm in Bracknell and would come under a diff group of observers wouldnt I?
