View Full Version : Repair estimate & insurance...your thoughts!!
Hello!! Just wondered what peoples' thoughts were on this??
Had a call from the Yamaha dealer to say that accident repairs to my ybr-125 were estimated at 1695 pounds...they thought it would be a write off as the bikes are only 1999 rrp and are actually on sale for 1799 at the moment.
Anyway, the insurance company has decided to have the bike repaired, it's going to need almost the entire front end replaced as well as a new tank and plastics and a new silencer amongst other things. Basically the frame and engine appear to be ok!!
Why would the insurer decide to repair the bike? It was only 8 weeks old when I had the accident...would age have influenced the decision?

lol maybe! Who knows?! I wouldn't want a new one...couldn't cope with the 45 mph limit for 600 miles running it in!! I think I'll aim for getting my test done on a bigger bike so that I can get out on the SV :D

Thetford hey? You're not all that far from Lincoln then. Do you get a chance to get out on ure bike much? Or should I say did you!

I was getting out on it a fair bit...even tho I had to ride everywhere ringing it's neck and still never getting past 65 mph :D it was still fun and I miss it...will be a while before my shoulder's better tho so I'm gonna have to be patient

were u hurt badly? I must admit as sad as it sounds I quite enjoyed my honda xr125 when I had that! how far from Lincoln is Thetford? Are there many people you go riding with?

I hurt my right knee and shoulder...the joint between my collarbone and shoulder blade have come apart so I can't move my arm properly and it looks fairly bizarre too!! Apart from that just bumps and bruises...back at work for the first time today after 3 weeks off :(
I don't think Lincoln's more than about 2 hours max from Thetford...not 100% sure tho!
I just end up going out on my own a lot of the time...it's usually a last minute decision, I'm usually on the back of my mates bikes if I go out with them as they don't like bimbling along at 60 :D

Yeah I guess, but then the biggest difference between a learner and a "big" bike is the speed they get there! Injuries sound nasty. What happened did you crash into a tank or something? Pleased to hear it hasnt put u off riding.

Check your policy carefully. Some policies automatically replace a new bike if the repairs are beyond a set limit ( about 50% IIRC).
Otherwise I'd strongly complain to the insurance company with proof that a new one can be purchased for a sum so close to the repair estimate, plus they will then have the salvage (such as it is). Also say there may well be a delay whilst they source the parts.

I was going straight over one of the roundabouts on the Thetford by-pass and some silly woman coming down the dual carriageway didn't see me in time to give way and went into the side of my bike...you can probably guess what she said to me ;)

Just under 3 months...for about the first 3 days I wasn't sure if I'd get back on a bike but I went to the BMF show the following weekend and ended up buying a couple of bike bits lol. My other half saw the accident happen and he didn't want me to ride again at first but now he wants a bike too!!

oooh er! My missus wasn't too keen on me actually getting my first bike but then Id made it clear to her from the beginning that at some point I would get a bike so she couldn't really argue!

Afternoon all.
Insurance companies are fickle buggers to deal with at the best of times, however you don't say if you have any excess on the policy, if you have say a £250 excess it brings the cost to them down to £1445.
Also as salvage values are considerably less on smaller bikes, they're unlikely to recap much from it should they write it off. Hence their decision to repair it.
Cheers.

Thank you...never thought of that...my excess is 150 so I guess that makes a bit of a difference!

For my 2-penneth worth, it does seem strange that they wont write it off.
The only thing I would be careful of is, as the bike was so new, and carefully cared for by you, you want to make sure that there are NO scratches to the frame or engine cases which the assessor may have thought weren't caused by the accident. I.e. you dont want to get the bike back with a new front end, tank etc, only to find that they didnt replace the engine covers because they assumed that the damage was present before the accident.
You have probably thought of that, and I hope you are on the mend...

don't 50% of the bikes value deem it an uneconomical repair?

Uneconomical for repair, by definition, should mean that i would cost more to repair, than it would to replace.
As the repair estimate is less than replacing it, then its not really surprising the insurance company is going for the cheaper option. Remember folks, its all about the £'s.

both my write off's was the same, the insurance told me more than 50% of its value would deem it uneconomical to repair? suppose there all different tho.

That's why I wanted it to go back to the dealer where I bought the bike, they're really helpful and have a good reputation. They showed me a list of all the parts they were quoting for before the estimate was sent to the insurer and basically said that they'd taken into account all damage that they found so it should hopefully come back as good as new...finger's crossed lol :D
