Ive posted before about the black crud coming out the back of my zaust, i thought it may have been oil but i was assured it wasnt by you guys and my spanner dude..
however...
i put my baffle back in my can so i can check fuel economy with it in and it is well and truely caked in black crud, but its really thick and has stained the baffle.. do you think washing the air filter would work? or is the stock one that paper rubbish? im sure its running rich..

have a go, see what happens. You could try a new air filter. How often do you use your bike? Do you use it for more short trips, or long trips?

Have you taken the plugs out yet?See if they are sooty and if one is dirtier than the other. That will give you an idea,as will a fuel consumption check. Is it using a lot?

I'm sure it's running as well, Lyle.

Could be a rich mixture if it's dry black sooty deposits. As biggles says check the plugs, these will confirm it if they are black too. Are the exhaust gases themselves a wee bit grey/black when you rev from cold? If you have a garage, start the bike from cold in the garage and let it run for 5 minutes while you stay in the garage doing other things. Go back in the house and if you and your clothes stink of unburnt petrol (smells like an old bike or car running cold on the choke on a winters morning), your running too rich. Any MOT station should check it with an exhaust gas analyser for a few quid.

What is this baffle you speak of?
IMO The plug check is the best way to see whats going on, I give the air filter a squirt with compressed air, whether this clears it or not I don't know but it cant hurt.

Yeah dizzy has done that to her yellow one via dremel, also had it jetted to suit, tempted to do the same and copy her jet sizes, only difference is she has a high level ART can.
Reckon this would get the mix right or are individual carbs too different?
Edit: Whats going on? there was a post from northwind here a minute ago!
