Since Phil24_7 got his bike, and i have become a pillion i have really enjoyed the whole biking thing!! I would like to learn but can barely hold his bike up, my feet just reach the ground and im an average (woman) driver!! Can you be a complete novice and still ride a bike (one with a motor)???

Now then Mrs 3 day week,
Never mind all this nonsense about bikes. What when there's all that washing and ironing to do? Not forgetting the hoovering and dusting. Your fella works very hard and deserves his relaxation on his bike. Thankyou.;)
Seriously, though.............why shouldn't you. People who have never driven or ridden before manage it, and if the SV is a bit tall for you, there are other bikes you should find easier, Go for it!!!

:D:D:D:D
Very true, however he is a very competant driver, unlike myself, i reverse into things even when i see them there!!! And yes...i am blonde!!!:geek:

You can get the bike lowered and the seat scooped out so it would be easier for you to reach the ground and keep the bike upright. But any big bike is going to feel heavy and cumbersome to start off with. If you learn to ride you'll start off on a much smaller less intimidating bike.

It's ok, you don't have reverse on (normal) bikes.

Don't use your own bike to learn on! Use one of the bike school's ones, then when you drop it you don't need to worry.

My Mrs was in the same situation as you. She had never even been on a bike before we met. She was hooked instantly. And while I was away last year she did her test and passed. I came back and she asked me if we could go bike shopping, little did I know she ment for her... ;)
So she bought a CBR400RR Babyblade and she recently traded that up for a Ducati Monster 600dark.
Go on. Do it. You will love it!

I would definitely recommend learing to ride yourself. I am an average driver (same reversing problem even with sensors) and had no idea how to ride a bike but managed to pass my test.
I have an SV650s and I am 5ft 3 so got the bike lowered and seat cut out so now I can touch the floor! I also struggled a bit with the weight of the bike but you soon get used to it and I wouldn't worry about dropping the school's bikes as they are well used to it!:D

You shoulld, I spent to long not learning to ride for various reasons and once I passed my test I regretted those years of thinking what if I fall off, what if I can't do it, what if I fail my test, what if I'm rubbish at riding.
After buying my own house, passing my bike test is the 2nd best thing I've ever ever done.
As somebody said to me once, never spend life regretting things you havent done, you're along time dead.
I hate reading posts by girls saying "I'm to short", "The bikes to heavy", "I can't do it" etc etc, It really irritates me, theres ways round things if you are short, and the only person telling you that you can't do it is you. My other half is a little taller than you and she manages all 3 of her bikes with no problems at all, its all in the mind, if you tell yourself you cant do it you wont, if you tell yourself that you can you will.

I can imagine! I am still quite cautious but I'm sure in time I'll be whizzier!
You'll have so much fun learing; i know I did!
go for it. I had been pillion for a few years, had even more years of a break and decided to learn. I went to riding school and did saturday on 125cc doing CBT. passed. Went back next day and did road work on 125cc ie learning about gears, life savers etc. The following weekend i went I was put onto ER 5 which is 500cc. I found it much easier to ride as you didnt have to rev it so much but it was heavier and higher. Im 5'5" but only 27" inside leg. Went b ack next day and was out on 500cc again. we spent most of day practising u turns, emergency stops and did the test route a few times. I fell off 17 times that day. Went back next day a nd sat test - failed for crossing lane on roundabout. waited 10 days sat it again and passed. went out next day a nd bought sv650s. had it for 5 years and loved it. now have a cagiva raptor 1000cc which is even better as its lower and I can reach the ground.
go for it and keep us updated with your progress

ok, so size doesn't matter!
You can get the bike lowered and the seat scooped out so it would be easier for you to reach the ground and keep the bike upright.
When I bought my bike new it had been lowered and reduced seat volume as the dealer manager had ordered it in for his daughter....it seriously felt tiny before the dealer converted it back.
You would be fine on one.

You can the SV lowed to suit your height so that won't be an issue at all.
I started on SR 125 then onto a GS500, I was so nervous when I started out riding, first gear feels so fast the first you get on a wobble about....thats normal:p
Oh I dropped the 500, didn't give it enough stick moving from a stand still and fell off, lol :smt036 lesson learnt.
I would go do your CBT and book your theory, casue once you have the CBT they will be no stopping you, I wanted to take the little leaner bike home, I want it I like bikes alot now!
Don't worry about the power of bike of the bike, its only goes as fast as you want it to, you are in control! Don't be scared of the power but respect it, thats what I go by any way.
So let us know how you get on doing the CBT, you love it.....talk is cheap go and enjoy yourself and when you do ride by the best kit you can afford!
