View Full Version : Damn Main Fuse
Folks...please help!!
Bike had no power last night, but bizarrely allowed me to arm/disarm the alarm. Took out the battery and charged it overnight in case it was that...but when I plugged it back in the bike still had no power anywhere and now the alarm can't even be set, so it's worse than when I started.
I have not yet checked the main fuse and I have a feeling this is the problem, although if it is blown...what caused it to blow might be a further worry :(
My problem is...where the hell is the main fuse? Driving me mad!! Have done a bit of searching and I hear talk of a green box or something...but I cannot see anything like that. There is a semi-clear box at the base of the tank, slightly to the right side...but if that's it, god knows how to get to it as you'd need mutated little toothpicks for fingers I reckon. Or do I actually have to lift the tank and find it under there?
Confused! :(
Follow the positive lead from the battery. You will get to a decent sized box with 2 main contacts at the top going to the battery and then on to the starter motor. There is also a bunch of wiring going off into the loom. This is the main / starter motor relay. It should have a nice 30A fuse IIRC, and should have a spare fuse attached to it. Please disconnect the battery, THEN play about with it.

 It's in my kitchen :o
Ta for the advice, will go have another look with some form of a clue this time. I think my vision might have been clouded by a little John Cleese-like moment this morning. If there had been a leafy branch lying about, I swear...

If it's a curvy the main fuse is in a green box behind the right hand black trim panel. There are two fuses (or should be). Ones a spare.

are you on a curvy or pointy? I've had a lot of problems with fuses on my K5.
most of the fuses are in the fuse box under the pillion seat, but just to be difficult (I'm sure there is a legitimate reason but no idea what it is!) there are two fuses under the rider's seat on the pointys. Just behind the battery there is a box with 2 cables going into it. The box has a semi-clear cover which click of pretty easily and you can then slide it along the cables to get it out of the way. This is the starter realy & it has 2 green 30amp fuses, one on the battery side of the box & one on the rear side (not sure where this is on the curvys - never had fuse problems with my old one). My K5 blew the battery-side fuse & this took out all the power, including disabling the alarm.
I still don't know what caused it so can't help you there, but its been fine since I replaced the fuse. All I can suggest is keeping a whole lot of spare fuses on the bike so you'll at least be able to get home if it happens again!
Ta folks, it's a k2 curvy. I'm just fed up this morning :(
New clutch last week :(
Head bearings the week before :(
Already had one severe bout of electrical trauma with it that turned out to be loose wiring right at the back that took ages to find...can't face this all again :(

That does sound like a lot of bad luck. How many miles has it done?
20k :)
Got it in March and stuck 6k on it since then. I suppose gremlins are to be expected in a 20k bike, but it doesn't make me feel better about them :(

Must've had a hard life.
Hopefully you'll soon iron out all the niggles and you can get back to enjoying the Sv experience.
Well I found the main fuse (what a hassle) and it was fine :(
Battery fully charged and reconnected...no power whatsoever. Yesterday I could arm/disarm the alarm...this morning I can't do anything at all :(

Guessing that the alarm's own battery is now flat.
Have you got a car /bike battery that you can jump lead in?
Just for the check, the main / starter relay has 2 fuses, one live, one spare, are both definitely fine? If so I'd break out a multimeter and see what gives. It is possible that the alarm immobiliser is stuck on, though on my ZX6 the immobiliser being on means I still get lights, but no instruments. Could be different on your bike or your alarm.

Yeah I'll need to go round it with a toothpick and perhaps a multimeter later when I have more time. Not even getting power to the alarm LED either...so really not sure where to start :(

Well the alarm supply will be a seperate issue. it should have it's own battery thats charged from the bike. It's to stop thieves being able to disable alarm by just cutting off bike battery. It might have drained down overnight as the bike battery was indoors being recharged. So personally I would concentrate on getting some power to the instrument lights and go from there.

Had a similar problem last week. Got all ready for work, got on bike, press the alarm keyfob and FA happened. Came to the conculsion that my Meta 357T had suddenly decided not to work anymore (battery fine, fuses fine, no flashing LED...) :smt076
I just took the alarm unit off, left all the wires in place and put jumpers in wiring plug. Therfore if I need to put a unit back it, can do it easily. So if you've got a Meta 357T (I had a version 1 but believe the version 2 to be the same) and recon that that is the problem, PM me and I'll let you know which wires in the plug I jumped together - save you having to strip all the tape off the wires and trace them all through :D

Could be that the main fuse box/relay is knackered- this happened to mine. I went through a spell of being able to get it to fire by wiggling the fuse, since it was a contacts issue, but that only lasted a while. A new part's about £45, but obviously it's a bit premature for that just now. Mine failed at 31000 I believe.

Sounds remarkably like my problem :)
Unless you fancy a ride down to London to come strip my alarm out for me, any chance of the details of how you sorted yours? Have PM'd you anyway...

GeeMac - You have a PM :)
Got there in the end, ta for all help and advice along the way!!!!
Turned out there looks to have been a short that's caused a bit of electrical mayhem. There's a little green connector thingy just in front of the airbox (in a rather hard to get at spot!!) that had part of it totally blackened and I think this also killed the alarm unit as well as once it was all fixed the unit was totally dead. Turned out the company who installed it didn't bother to stick a fuse inline to protect it!!!! Ah well!!!!
