View Full Version : Do we become our own stereotype.
Do we become our own stereotype without releasing it.
For example -
I'm short, a bit plump at the moment, ride a bike and work for IBM.
So that means -
I have short angry man syndrome, jolly, penchant for leather and scaring old ladies on my noisy bike, while being a computer nerd.
Would you all say that is true?
Are you to like your stereotype?
I'm 6'1", not really that plump, have a shaved head, and work in something that has a bad name and people try to blame things on.
I would say I'm not a stereotypical biker.
i am 6ft 3, 15 stone, slim (as a 15 stone bloke can be), ooze sex appeal, blonde with blue eyes
i am not a stereotypical biker, i dont think.

Of course not, you'd have to ride a bike to be one.

I work in IT and am a bit overweight. I ride a motorbike and have a beard. Conversely, I like dance music, but not drugs. I am doing academic work at the moment, but I am not an alcoholic.
So, 50% of my stereotypes are true. What does that mean?

I'm skinny, 6 foot, long blonde hair with facial piercings (Oh and I'm male). I wear hoodies and baggy jeans most of the time. People always think I'm a stonner. When I tell them I have two degrees from Cambridge and I'm doing a DPhil at Oxford, they always look supprised (I have also worked for a living!). But then again, I did used to smoke a fair amount of gear, so maybe the stereotypes are kinda true.
I don' think the biker stereotypes hold true anymore cos so many different sorts of people ride now. I was amazed when I first joined the org at how many differnt jobs, ages and characters were on here. I guess I had my own stereotypical sort of biker in mind.

I'm german, female, started riding last year at 49 and just got a new naked, black SV650. I'm still too scared to ride in the wet and use either the car or my quad to get to work.
Any stereotypes for me????

What attracted you to biking then? A new opportunity to don some liederhosen?:p

Yes and I'm trying to convince myself, that life starts at 50!
What made it easier, is that I already had the licence. I got it together with the car licemce, when I was 18 but until now I never could afford a bike.
I'm short haired, short, definitely not girly, work in a factory, swear like a trooper, scare all my workmates rigid, and love nothing more than to be messing about on and with bikes.
Dyke on a bike?
Nope.................strictly a meat and two veg girl:D
i dont know if im steryotypical or not. being female usually means most people dont expect you to be a biker. I too have short hair and a shapely physique (round is a shape)
im work in a school, am a single mum, I do kickboxing.
just makes me odd I think lol

i was gonna write something really good, but hit the back button on my browser.
So here's the gist
I dont fit stereotypes. Im a student, but dont drink and spend all my money. I am a biker but not a stereotypical one cos my bike is yellow (stereotype is black) and I am a cheerful and curtious rider (stereotype is that we all eat children for breakfast). I am a student of science, and i love it. But im not nerdy. I'd rather be out on my bike riding than indoors getting giddy on calculus. I am a geek though, as I get excited at the prospect of doing something involving thinking and solving a problem.

I'm female, midwife, non drinker, non smoker, quite girly, love handbags, love shoes, quiet.
No one ever believes I'm a biker till they see me on the bike.
im 5' 8 less just under ten stone shaved head, goatie, hate getting up in the mornings, getting bored with my job and everything... and i mean everything twists my nips!
what does that make me?

Surely you are very patronising as well? Otherwise, please do try harder ;)
Your task for the .org for the week is to stop someone and say 'Who do we think we are sir, Stirling Moss?'

Patronising? I might be, but don't you worry about it mate, it's very complicated.
And further more, this is the modren Police service. Official guidlines state it is now
"Who do you think you are? Lewis Hamilton?"
as he is an aspirational figure for minority youth groups......;)
just makes me odd I think lol
Yup
Me :?: No damn idea. I've been and done too many different things to be stereotypical anything. I've gone from being supremely physically fit to a stone and a half over my ideal weight. I've gone from a high school drop out with no education, joined the army and got educated at the same time, left the army and did a multitude of different jobs and now work at middle management for BT in an office. Go figure, cause I can't.

People definitely do have a preconceived notion of what sort of person I am. Does my heart good to prove them wrong whenever I can... ;)

We were doing a team building exercise for work and one of the things you had to do is get people with certain attributes to sign your sheet (green eyes, play golf etc) More than half the people in the office asked me to sign for a tatoo... and thought I was lying when I said no :geek:
