Where i work and the places i work, i come across a lot of people who dont use thier 1st name, prefering thier middle or other name. Why is this? Are they frankly embarresed of thier Christian name?

Are you one of these people, or do you know someone like that and why they do it?

One of my mates surname is bond, and yes his 1st name is James. However, he uses his middle name of Gordon! A woman here whos name is Fancessca, uses her middle name or Arabella!! I have no idea whay?

How odd

where i work, the clients sometimes use alternative names, but thats generaly because they dont want to be found!

My girlfriend uses her middle name, her real name only appears on bank details/passport etc. it's not because there's anything wrong with her first name, it is just that her mother has the same name (albeit verbally is called something else! Confusing, eh?) and they wanted to avoid the situation where they would get letters addressed to them and it might not be obvious who it is for. She also prefers her middle name, as do I.

I know alot of people who do it.

Generally very rich clients.

Company usually registered under a different spoof or altered name.

Mainly so they can lead a private life without people knowing they are rather well off and bombarding them with letters begging for money to their home addresses etc.

Can be even more confusing when you forget they have a different name. I went to see a mate in hospital to be told he wasn't there. Phoned his home to be told he was still in. They knew him as Paul, yet I who have only known him for 40 years knew him as Terry. You would have thought they would have said but we have a Paul Valiant when I ask for Terry Valiant

My name seems to attract stupid jokes, dunno why!!! Im waiting for a joke/comment that is actually funny and one that hasn't been used a 100 times before!

I don't use a different name, but will not answer to Kevin and at work everything I do I go by Kev, name on my door, pass, any documents I write, signatures and so on......

I have no idea why I do it. In fact the only person I know who calls me Kevin is my mum.

Surely it would be a data protection breach??

my fella uses his middle name but he doesn't know why- only that his mum and dad never called him by his first name so he doesn't answer to it. I think they may have bee "obliged" to give him a name they didn't like:confused:

Funnily enough this has just come up at my work - out of 150 people there are 5 who dont use their real first names - choosing to use their middle names - was a bit of a pain as I had set a new person up with their given name and they ring me up asking to change it all!

We have a few people here who's login names do not tally with their actual name and they are also using their middle names. Without explanation.

I don't use my first name, it begins with W and I HATE it, hate my middle name too, which is Louise, so everyone calls me Lou!
It is a pain when you change jobs, as everyone starts off with the proper name, but all have got used to Lou now!

I've given my daughter two middle names, and she can use whichever she likes, but does happen to like her first name!

my other half goes by the name of 'Bob' when it comes to anything to do with booking restaurant tables, car hire, etc. His real name is Etienne, but noone ever catches it the first time, and they always spell it wrong too. He came to the consclusion that every nationality knows the name Bob, and funnily enough he never has to spell it either!

oh, and I also have a few Indian friends who have two names, an 'official' one and one they use on a day-to-day basis - it's a tradition/cultural thing

My grandad's name was Peter, but some people called him Pat (He was irish)... Pretty strange to me.

I don't like my first name and would prefer to be called by my second - Elizabeth, Beth for short, but it's not something I've ever tried implementing.

My surname is Hall, which you would think would be simple, but without fail the exact same thing happens to me on the phone when I say my name!!!

It often gets spelt wrong and I get variations from Horne, Hull, Hoare, etc.

I have had to resort to spelling it directly after I say it so that I don't have to bother with repeating it.
