Things like Crash helmets and pillows. 2 of the items, that you dont know are going to be any good until you use them, but then cant take them back. I think its wrong!!

Pillows. How do you know if youa re going to find them comfortable? There isnt a bed in the shop to try them out on, and usualy they are vaccum packed so you cant even have a feel!! Yet you cant take them back due to Hygene reasons!

Crash helmets. They may be as noisy as anything, or be painful after half hour riding, yet you cant take them back!

Its wrong.

What else cant you take back and do you think its reasonable?

Ear plugs! Apparently my ear wax just ain't good enough for some people and the shop don't think they can re-sell them :D

EDIT: Really should point out that I'm not claiming this is particularly unreasonable :D

Saw in MCN yesterday that Lazer helmets are going to be giving certain dealers "Test Ride" helmets, so you can take them out and try them without having to buy it first. Seems like a good(ish) idea, but with lots of scope for little scrotes to run off with them....

you can't take back toothbrushes, haircare items such as brushes, curlers, underware or anything that has touched your skin

Most stuff. When i brought my textile trousers, I asked the guy in the shop the returns policy. He gave me a blank look and asked what I ment. I said, if I want to return them, incase I find them uncomfortable when riding or whatever. He said if im not happy, then he wont sell them, kin of agressivly. I brought them anyway because i wanted them, but didnt have peace of mind that I could return them and get my money back incase I didnt get on with them

Same with everything, most places dont want you to bring stuff back if you are unhappy with it despite it being ok. If I ran a bike shop, I would allow my customers 2 weeks to test their purchase, and if they dont like it, bring it back. With helmets i would get an xray machine in so I could analyse, just to make sure they didnt drop it and damage it.

I tend not to have a problem taking things back (obviously I wouldn't try to return underwear etc)

I hate shopping and trying on stuff in the dressing rooms, so I normally just grab what I think may fit me take it home, try it at my leisure then return it at my leisure.

I'm sure that's not correct.

If you ran a bike shop like that you'd be lucky to survive two weeks. When you go to buy new gear, you go to buy *new* gear. how would you feel to buy a new helmet that someone else has had before? Or a new thermal base layer that 3 people have all worn for a week?

If you didn't resell the returned stuff, what would you do with it? The importers certainly would not have it back from you.

With helmets i would get an xray machine in so I could analyse, just to make sure they didnt drop it and damage it.

Unfortunately, you cannot detect drop damage using x-rays - EPS does not show up on an x-ray, but you do get a lovely look at the rivets holding the visor base plates on. ;)

I'm not having a go at you Matt, but a lot of people seem to buy in haste rather than taking their time to get the right product for them. If you want to be able to try clothing for a week and return it if you don't like it, then you'd have to be willing to buy 'second hand' stuff as new.

You're right Sarah, you can't take things back just cause you don't like them, if you bought them in a shop. I think your rights are different online.

Trading Standards page (http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/cgi-bin/calitem.cgi?file=ADV0043-1011.txt)

(Edit: Yeah, just looked more, if you buy via telephone or internet, you have 7 days from receipt of goods to return the item, even if you just don't like it.)

JoI agree, but people buy stuff 99% of the time on recomendation and as the syaing goes, one mans meat is another poison and all that.

Crash helets, and tyres seem to be top in the motorcycle top ten. You buy a lid because a mate, or internet junkie says so, you wear it, and its noisy as hell, or the ventalation is rubbihs, something you are not going to find out until you wear it on your bike etc. Tyres. I fell foul of this. Get Conti road attacks everyone said, so i did, and i hated them with in 5 mins of being on the bike! £150 riding a bike on tyres i didnt like for a year! Expensive.

My girlfriend is having pillow trauma, which is why i brought this up. Her pillows are whey past thier sell by date so looking for new ones as shes getting neck ache etc. So she bought ones form a shop, stating they are Firm, and to be honest no different than her current old pillow, yet the shop is saying theres nothing worng with them and wont take them back. Another £20 down the pan. Its soooooo annoying

John Lewis don't mind you trying one out - you feel a bit of a dork lying on one of their display beds though.

That's definitely not right! :) Under distance selling regs, as someone else said you have 7 days to return if you buy something over phone or t'interweb as you don't get to see it, but you'll have to pay the postage back and usually a 're-stocking' fee.

Birthday cards - you buy one, give it to someone, and they're disappointed. Didn't do what it was supposed to do but you can't take it back! :| (Or maybe they should have been happy to just receive one!)

Bananas - I always try and buy them at a certain colour but some bunches taste much better than others (this holds for most fruit actually!) I hate it when I buy 10 bananas and they all taste funny.

This may be straying from original intended goods to be used in this discussion!

Got the same problem, I can't remember the last time I've slept all the way through the night. I can't keep buying different pillows to try either

On that note, you'd probably have a hard time trying to return a condom.

Im talking about things that you SHOULD be able to return, not things that are 'disposable' items

Bundled Windows operating systems with PC's.

I'd like to consider them as £200 rebate tokens.

Also, not using NHS services for a year entitles you to a partial rebate of your contributions. Kind of the other way round, but irritates me none the less.

Its not wrong for crash helmets!!! they are a SAFETY item, once a lid leaves our shop we have NO WAY of telling whats happened to that lid! it could have been dropped/knocked etc....
I once had a lady who spent half an hour wearing a arai in the shop as she wasnt sure if it was going to fit ok-and it did, if your not sure about fit ASK to keep it on longer! and as for noise-wear earplugs, ALL helmets are noisy

Had many people put their spanking new Arai lid on their saddle while they get their keys out and have a gust of wind blow it off?

I can only imagine the scene... "Oh I just don't like the colour anymore! :^o"

And theres your problem , just because someone else thinks its top dollar doesnt mean it suits you/your riding style..step outside the box, think for yourself, try stuff YOU think/know suits you/your bike.stuff what everyone else says
