Coming along my private runway today at about 80, and all of a sudden no power, tachos dropped to 0, speedo 0, lights off, no electrics at all.
Coasted to a stop, thought WTF?, presumed I'd blown the main fuse from lightbulb going or something daft like that, main fuse was fine, tried putting the key on again and hey presto, dash lights are on and it fired right up.

Checked it out when I got home, and there was a bit of the (suzuki applied) insulation tape come off the main live wire from the starter relay up to the loom where it joins in to the wires from RR unit, fusebox, ignition switch etc.

My question is, if this shorted out to anything, why did it cause loss of power without blowing the main fuse, and without there being any evidence of burnt wires?

Maybe that wire is a red herring and your battery terminals are loose or something similar?

They're tight and clean.

Does the starter relay ever cause simliar problems, though the bike has been starting fine and this is the first time I've seen a problem.

check the connector that goes into the top of the relay, if thats pulled the bike will go completley dead i think.

It would, as thats where the whole loom takes power from, but it was in, and wiggling it did not make the lights go out when I was playing around with it

It could be the relay itself, that happened to me a while back... It was very intermittant initially, caused by a loose contact on the main fuse which I could generally sort by wiggling the fuse about (while trying not to electrocute myself). If it happens again, put it in neutral and see if it'll fire if you short the terminals on top of the relay, if it does, it's probably the relay circuit that';s knackered.

If it happens again I might bodge it by swapping the main fuse for a 20A and adding another 10A fused feed to the loom right from the battery. Then the starter relay will only need to work to actually fire the bike. (this is assuming that the starter motor current does not go through the main fuse)
