My mums mum - Cos before she died i had a chance to go up with mum to go see her like we always used to do, to go out for lunch take the dog for a walk etc, but i was too busy sleepin, she still gave my mum a tenner pocket money for me :( - i was so gutted when she died because i feel like i let her down and must've looked heartless(and was)

Her Husband (my grandad) - Never met him cos he died before i was born, he was a good boxer apparently and wanted to teach me, so i taught myself :)

Then some famous people like, Rossi, Sheene, Pele and Ali.

Why does everyone choose Adolf Hitler? I mean, would he really make a good dinner party guest? Or would he just rant and rave all the time. I'd rather have all my mates plus Stephen Fry, now THAT would be a laugh.

From what I know I don't think Hitler spoke English, so you'd need to trade a place for his interpreter....

Me, I'd have 6 members of Eastenders, Jeremy Kyle and that bloke on the front of yesterdays tabloids who was teaching Kate Middleton how to use a rifle.

Then after an hour and a half of everyone asking "What's going on?" maybe we could get a decent conclusion.

Just a little side point here if I might be so bold?

There are many that seem to have bought in to the "Hitler was VERY intelligent" line. No official data for any IQ test being carried out is available. I dont know of any genuine facts that would indicate him as a supreme intellect.

Hitler was not bright enough to even qualify from his secondary school and dropped out. he had grandiose ideas of his artistic ability but was refused by every unversity he approached. I am not aware that he entered in to any further education to improve him either?

When in the army he never actually progressed past the rank of Corporal.

The only positive that I can find about this man,(remember this is the guy who became besotted over his niece and his fatuation and jealousy led to her committing suicide/being topped by one of Hitler's cohorts) is that for his captivated audience he was an impressive orator.

I stand to be shown by anyone who is able to educate me as to what the appeal of this person was as it does I admit leave me mystified.

Just because I dont see it, dont mean your view is incorrect, I am simply curious as to what the attraction is.

I could be rading all of this wrong of course, those that have invited him might just want to flick a spoonfull of mashed potato at him? LOl

Pedro,

Sure hitler never ranked above corporal (or gefreiter).

I'm not sure why most people are interested in him.
The reason I am is because I like history, especially ww2, he was in effect the center of that period of history.

Yeah, hitler wasn't the most educated guy in the world, but to be homeless (at one point) then to be the most important man in the world, makes you wonder how he did it, no?
Also he was FAR from a military tactician, he was a gambler/chancer, Stalingrad is a prime example of this.

Sure how he came to power was all down to callus manipulation/cowardice/paranoia taking advantage of germanys financial position in the post-ww1 recession (night of the long-knives etc), for him to gain power of the D.A.P which later became the N.S.D.A.P under hitlers power.

But still, I think it's facinating how a simple, poor and under-educated man can can gain so much in such a short space of time.

He wasn't even a natural speaker (he was a mumbler), he practised speaking daily, I have many photos of him practising his 'wild gesticulations' he was a showman... and a good one at that.

Pedrosa

Good point not proven at all. No avatar hassle with this. However the more I dig around, his career, his education, his behaviour etc etc etc do not smack of any great intelligence at all. Indeed a private conversation of his was secretly filmed,(Hitler NEVER allowed any filming of him when he was off guard) the footage was examined by experts who stated that his level of conversation was at best "of a working class level" now for the period for which he was famous, that is terribly poor for the leader of a country??

Did you know Henry Ford might be held responsible for many of Hitler's anti semitic rantings? Yep Hitler read two books produced by Ford, one of which warned of world domination by the Jews!

Anyway you can't knock a guy who picked on the biggest empire in the world.

The largest army in thw world.

The most powerful financial and industrial nation in the world!

Smart moves there Adolf!;)

Keithd...you made me titter and them some with your reply.

In my defence, remove the anti semitism, nazism or basically whatever drum Hitler was beating. I still struggle to find anything that makes the man stand out in history?

But sorry for the derail, I will leave this alone now. It's just this thread got me a thinkin.

One or two of you guys have opted for peeps I might have chosen and so have had to alter my list slightly. One person though I just cannot remove from my last and is a repeat of that shown by others.

Martin Luther King Jr.

As an 8 year old I sat spellbound in class as we were played tapes of his most famous speeches. Fantastic orator(up there with Churchill and yes Hitler) devoted to the cause of the injustice that is racial prejudice.

Leonardo da Vinci.

Simply one of the most amazing minds that our species has ever produced.

Billie Holiday.

That quirky voice that delivers her soul in every song. A grim and tragic life but her impact in the world of music was monumental.

Christopher Columbus.

For having the dogged determination to keep chasing sponsors for his voyages. Although error strewn his travels changed the world as man knew it.

James Hargreaves.

For his invention of The Spinning Jenny which revolutionised and along with many other vital inventions around the time heralded in the modern world as we now know it.

Bert Munro.

For his sheer determination and inventiveness in his pursuit of speed records.

Sitting Bull.

A very religious and courage leader of his people.

Babe Ruth.

Possibly the first ever real sports superstar. One of his batting records stood until 2001. Not a perfect role model but a true larger than life character.

p.s. Waiting on table would hopefully be the likes of:

Salma Hayek

Halle Berry

Teri Hatcher

Indeed he encouraged the production of a motor car that was accesible to normal people and saw massive investment in to the transport infrastructure of Germany.

The improved train and road network did come in rather handy along the way in connection with several of Hitler's other inspired plans don't you think?;)

This is a difficult question. If you invited someone like Billy Connolly (who I'd love to meet), he'd end up dominating the conversation so you'd not be able to make the most of the other attendees presence. And of course, some people may not like each other, so it may not work that well either.

Michael Wood (historian, for his passion)
David Attenborough (no reason necessary, surely)
Richard Feynman (would make me belive I could understand what he was talking about)
Neil Armstrong (apparently a very stroppy man - probably just bored of the same questions all the time, but I admire his courage)
Jesus (be kind of interesting to try and p*ss him off :-))

Yeah that's right,
What with him being an artist and a failed one at that, (he used to sell his paintings to make ends-meat when he was a down-and-out and on the bones of his a*se, with very few buyers.)
Hitler not only encouraged the production of the VW but he also designed/sketched 'himself' the prototype of the car that would later become the Beetle.

I would be interested in hearing his ranting about lots of things, getting to know how he managed to get to so much power, he obviously had some charm and powers of persuasion, I just think he would be an interesting person to talk to, find out why he thought the way he did, and to try and understand if he was really a mad man.

He did at one point have a great tactical mind and had it not been for him trying to take on both the eastern and western front at the same (i.e winter) time Germany would have won the war.

For what it is worth I admire him for how he came from nothing to almost control the whole of Europe.

Hitler did not sketch the first Beetle. Nor did he invent the Autobahn.
Hitler liked Porsche's Type 12, and asked him to sort of use that car as a template for a simpler cheaper car for mass production. Porsche designed the KDF-Wagen, which became the Beetle.

The Autobahn was created in the late 1920's sometime, and again Hitler had nothing whatsoever to do with it. He did think they were a good idea though, and kept building them when he took power in 33.

There is a huge difference in thinking something is a good idea, or telling someone to do something, and it being your idea.

It is just not true to give Hitler this sort of credit.
The idea that you would actually want some person like this at a Dinner party sort of blows me away.

True, 'if' Hitler really was as mad as a balloon and not sane, then clearly he wasn't repsonsible for his crimes, he was mad, he couldn't help it (not my personal belief, just an analogy).

At the end of the day, Hitler was a product of his lot in life, the first world war and everything that followed soon after.
Good or bad, people are facinated by him and his legacy, the proof's in the pudding, so to speak.

Ha ha. Nah. I dont think so. I dont think I would find him remotely interesting.
The scenario, the things that went on in Germany that lead to the Third Reich are interesting, but him himself, just not really interested.

I mean, better minds than me are obsessed with him. I was staying with in one of your Former PMs a couple of years ago, (Callaghan) and he was reading a Hitler Biography... so, I mean, yeah I suppose there is a fascination there.
Not really with me though.

That might be a pic of him beginning an Autobahn, but Autobahns precede him, both the concept and the name. He liked them though. He thought they were great.

You know I am 100% with Phil on the Hitler issue,(but you guessed that right?)

Take away his name and still invite him to the party. What you are faced with is someone that came up with NO ideas of his own, he did not have the ability to do that. He simply took hold of rather questionable thinking largely due to,(as mentioned by others) his own short comings and how he felt life was sh*tting on him. The original thinking was brought out in publice many years earlier by others.

You would have sat opposite you at the table someone who would spout such rabid nonsense that anyone with a hint of intelligence and morality about them, would soon be offended by his presence.

His disaffection began to find an open ear from a German people suffering economic difficulty largely caused by sanctions imposed upon their country following WW1. This as we know began to manifest itself to the greater extent against the Jewish people of europe, but let us not forget the persecution of many other groups along the way.

Not even his own thinking,(Goebbels was acreduted with the phrasing.) but Hitler was famed for using the following and this largely was the foundation of his entire propaganda campaign that brainwashed a generation of German people:

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."

Ladies and gents I rest my case.

Hitler was famed for using the following and this largely was the foundation of his entire propaganda campaign that brainwashed a generation of German people:

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."

But don't all politicians use the very same mantra to this day? ;)

Anyway this thread is getting slightly de-railed into a pro/anti Nazi discussion.
No-one has said they admire or agree with Hitlers or the Nazi parties doctrines etc.
All they/I have said is they'd have him around for dinner and a bit of a chat.
